It matters on the year. BMW used the M20 in the E34 until 92, in which the M50 replaced it.

I have a turbocharged M20 in my E34. 300+ ft-lb of torque to the wheels is a wonderful thing.

M20 on stock internals up to 11psi, no problem with decent tuning. My M20 Dinan turbo is making VERY good power on 9-10Psi :buttrock
The previous owner of this car is also currently turboing a M20 525i too using MegaSquirt for tuning. He's going to run about 1Bar of boost.

The m20 isn't the most efficent turbo engine... But it does get the job done.
