The front end looks like a fat chick with an overbite, and the back end looks like it's growing cancerous tumors.

It's funny how people can have such varying opinions on what looks good. I think they're beautiful cars, but maybe I'm alone on this.

Lots of people like the way they look. Same reason some people like vanilla and some people like caramel cashew. If we all liked the same car life would be pretty boring. The car just does not make much sense to me, personally, IMO, YMMV, etc. It's like a German Camaro. Way too big and heavy, not enough finesse.

I really enjoyed my E36 M3 even though it had a lot of shortcomings... but there are no current BMW offerings that I aspire to own. They're getting so big, fat and ugly. So the M6 has 500 horsepower, whoop-de-doo.. the thing weighs 4,000lbs and the trunk looks like it was lifted from a cheap Honda bodykit. :help

The weight argument: generally speaking, the target market that goes for these cars are looking for "boulevard cruisers." Like the idea of an M3 'vert. A "having your cake and eating too" train of thought.

They're not looking to go autox or track those cars for the most part. For those kinds of cars, BMW would get gutted by Mercedes and Audi sales if they tried to strip them down or not make them "substantial" and reality is, that is the market that BMW is going for with a bias towards sport than the other 2. There is enough sportiness to have the weekend spirited drive for the weekend warrior.

Those who have the money and are sports car purists/enthusiasts wouldn't look at these cars anyway-they'd look at a Porsche.

Looks: I don't it's the greatest looking car in the world. I think the MBs have nicer designs. But that's me.

Wow, someone who actually understands how cars are marketed. :buttrock

I don't think the target market for the M6 is looking at the car to go autoXing or tracking. :laugh The people who will buy the car are people who want a car that has more get-up and go than what the 6 Series has to offer, is a little rarer, sporty, yet is fun to drive with family/clients. The M6 offers all that. The target market for the M6 is likely to buy another car in addition to the M6 if they really want to go tracking.

Of course nobody expects a car like this to be a track toy or autocross weapon... I certainly didn't mean to imply that I thought it would be used as such. But weight isn't only important on the track, it is also a key contributor to how a car feels in the real world. I just don't see the point of the car. On the more sporting side there is the 911. On the more luxurious side there is the M5. What's the point of the M6 - someone who wants an M5 but prefers a cramped back seat? The cars are equal performers from the standpoint of the target market...

Yeah, but it's like the idea of a 330i vs 330Ci or the C350 vs CLK350. I personally am not a fan of 4 door sedans. I prefer something with a sportier look like the Ci or the CLK.

Another situation that comes to mind was when we all heard Porsche was coming out with an SUV. I heard MANY times, "Why would Porsche build one? It's not necessary." Well, they did, and it is a success.

I believe BMW's marketing dept. did their job and determined that there is a market for the M6. I think it will be a success. Time will tell. :dunno

ahem...for the price of the M6...I'd go straight to my Porsche dealer and sign on a GT3...if they were closed and I wanted something for the street only I'd go right to my Aston Martin dealer and pick up a DB9...

the above represent 2 superb cars and are very much better than the M6, the GT3 is a no brainer performance car that happens to be street legal also, I've driven it on track and on the street and it's a rocket on the street and such a treat to have on the track (very close to it's GT3-R cup car racing equivilant with a bit more road manners and slightly softer feel)...the Aston is pure style, elegance and has gorgeous lines...it's an Aston Martin pure and simple, enough said:) ...I'm with JV on this one...

I like four door sedans as I am growing older now. I like the ability to use a functional back seat; but, do not want an anemic car either in terms of handling/acceleration. I am like JV, I like the E36 a lot. Very well-balanced and fairly-priced compared to what is coming out now.

With traffic everywhere increasing these days, having a 500 hp car is great for about .1 seconds ...

I like the porsche cayman; but, I think cars are getting overpriced. I would never spend that kind of coin for a car. I am leaning more toward older BMW's now ... like E34's and E36's. I also like the new honda civic a lot.

You are pretty old, and I think you just like sedans because of the way they kick your azz around the track :dunno
