View Full Version : Just got raped on shipping...
Danny S 05-15-2006, 06:13 PM Didn't even get a kiss!
What is the recommended method to ship wheels & tires? Just sent 4 wheels w/ tires mounted. Delivered to UPS counter (no pickup) and sent UPS ground, I was charged $157.31.
Did they see me coming, or what!?!
=O
eurotunerwerks 05-15-2006, 06:22 PM fedex only charges like $50

make sure next time when you're shipping a large item with UPS, give it a thick coating of vaseline first....just so it doesnt hurt after....hahaha
clor0x 05-15-2006, 06:33 PM Try and always use Fedex Ground for stuff like this. They have much cheaper prices and same delivery times as UPS Ground...
yeah i just ordered wheels and they were sent in 4 different boxes like normal, but i just got two today and the other two are in two different states, wtf ups
coldblooded 328 05-15-2006, 10:44 PM damn, that is a big rip. sorry to hear. let it be known to everyone never to go with ups
Don Nguyen 05-16-2006, 02:50 AM That's how much it costs to ship CSL wheels :dunno
You do realize that wheels and tires together weigh about 50 lbs a peice right?

Each 2 wheel/2 tire package (shrink-wrapped in pairs) weighed 91lbs. I was hit for $78+change for each for a total of $157.31.
Just checked 90sec ago, TireRack would have charged me $97+change to ship a comparable wheel/tire set UPS ground.
I did NOT expect to get UPS's best volume discounted, frequent shipper account rates, I realize private parties get charged a little more to ship.
But I did NOT expect to get charged over $60 MORE to ship these things myself than I would have had to pay to have a major distributor ship them to me.
Facts is facts.
Rape is rape.
UPS sux.
Period.
(Of course, that's just one rape victim's opinion!)

Sounds consentual to me.
FredK 05-16-2006, 08:25 AM I did an identical shipment calculation using Fedex and UPS.
Two 91 lb packages
Origin Massachusetts, destination California
22" in all three dimensions
$500 insurance on each package
Dropoff at customer counter
Residential delivery (Fedex Max Weight is 70 lbs for Home Delivery, so normal Ground rates apply)
UPS was $162, Fedex was $136. It's not like Fedex costs WAY less. UPS penalizes you for sending heavy packages more than Fedex. It's that Union labor! But I bet their commercial customers get a much better pricing structure.
Did you know that if you open an online account with Fedex (free) you get 10% off ground?
m3fuz 05-16-2006, 08:51 AM So...FedEx isn't that expensive? We don't get French benefits??
Tony@Bekkers 05-16-2006, 10:31 AM fedex only charges like $50
Sorry, but you are way off. We ship wheels everyday, no tires, from GA to CA the average is about 85-90$ per set of four. We don't sell tires so I am not sure how much they will add, but 50$ to ship four wheels and tires is unrealistic.

They must have been CSL replicas, right?
VahramHS 05-16-2006, 11:07 AM Yup we ship wheels from CA to the east using Fedex Ground and it is anywhere from $75-$90 and that is with our discount. Tirerack must have a great contract with UPS because they get awesome rates.
M3inNC 05-16-2006, 11:24 AM I'm surprised no one has mentioned using DHL Ground. They are consistantly cheaper than UPS and FedEx. I highly recommend checking out their rates.
Tony@Bekkers 05-16-2006, 11:45 AM My experience with DHL is not a positive one, they are bad about losing stuff. Maybe we just have bad luck with them, but if you are in a hurry don't go with DHL. I find the reliabilty chain to be as such: UPS, FedEx, DHL, USPS. Some may have differing experiences, but this is my opinion.
like2short 05-16-2006, 12:27 PM how about shipping on a Pallet? via truck?

Nope. Jimmy Dean makes sausage. James Dean is an actor.

Didn't even drive BMW!
GotCone? 05-16-2006, 02:21 PM I use DHL, you can open up your own account and they'll even do pick up.
I've shipped out a set of 23 lbs wheels for around $45 and a set of tires for about $38. That is with pick up and they just bill my account and I can pay it as I go. Setting up the account is free also.
I just shipped out a Subaru turboback exhaust this week in a 54"x12"x17" box weighing 40 lbs and it only ran $31... + what ever the pick up charge will be.
If you don't want to do your own DHL account, then FedEx is your next choice for cheap shipping on wheels/tire bit items.
de45t 05-17-2006, 05:53 PM ups always rapes you, but only if you let them!
dicount tire ships for free, but you have to mount and balance!
