I realize that parts of this question has been addressed in part on the forum before, but I am somewhat confused about the Inspection I and the computer which tracks it theoretically. The items which are simple inspection items (majority of items in Service I) could be done by anybody, even an owner who for the most part would be aware of any problems with the inspected areas. The most important item which needs inspection (or does it really) appears to be valve adjustment. If this is true, are we really to believe that the computer can decide that you need the inspection at 21K versus 30K based on what? On how many trips made, on time since the vehicle was produced? I am very skeptical that the computer is programmed to interpret from such data as time and type of trips, the need for valve adjustment or not. My 2001 Vert M3, new to me, has only 21k on it and the BMW dealer is telling me I should have the Inspection I done and have valves checked. Independent shops vary in their advice based on the computer telling me I now need the Inspection I. Some say that valves rarely go out and don't bother, others say that it is a good idea to check. It seems to me that the Inspection I is a joke and I should just pay to have valves adjusted if needed and look a the other items myself. Is this computer precognition worth anything or is it a fake? Any imput appreciated. Posted this to E46 forum by mistake.

Does it on set of factors, fuel consumed, mileage, cold starts blah blah blah. Trust me milage don't mean sheit, it's time and usage style that dictate service.

AS for the valves, I did my own valve adjustment at 44K and only one valve was towards the upper end of the tolerance, Still with in spec though. They rarely go out of spec but it's still worth the check.

It needs valve adjustments. Sometimes they are all within spec, and i've seen where 3 valves where out of spec.
I recommend getting it done.
As ferris said. It calculates fuel consumtion, mileage, oil quality etc.

As ferris said. It calculates fuel consumtion, mileage, oil quality etc. That's what it used to do many years ago.. now it's based on the amount of fuel consumed.. makes sense - if you baby the car - fuel mileage goes up and wear goes down. If you beat on the car - fuel mileage drops and wear goes up.

I seem to recall seeing the number 660 liters, but I suspect that number is low. 660 gallons sounds about right (x20 MPG = 13,200 miles)
