My problem is with a e38 (97 740IL) I had my valve cover gaskets replaced by a local shop and now I'm wondering if they did it right. Before I took it in the car was excellent no problems whatsoever except for a little oil leaking down to the bottom of my engine. So once I got it back the car had a little bounce or rock to it when idling in gear. So after about 3 wks it has gotten worse. I got the codes read and it stated my cyl 4 and 8 were misfiring. I pulled the plugs and 8 had oil on the electrode. Now it has starting smoking, I'm thinking because of the oil on the plug (white smoke with a hint of blue) and its smoking at the rear of the engine below the valve cover gasket. I felt back there and didn't feel any oil. Took it to the stealer and what do you know, they did THE EXACT same thing I told them I did to check it and said they couldn't diagnose it unless they went into the engine for $4-$5000.00. Then they charged me a diagnostic fee ($102.00). WTF? My SES light was on and I changed the nr 8 plug and it went out, rough idle stopped too but it all came back after a day. Thats why I don't think its a bad engine either. Like I said it was running perfect before I had the valve cover gaskets replaced. I cleaned my MAS and replaced my O2 sensors in the
