wannaMMM 08-17-2007, 02:14 AM I loved reading through this tread. Its amazing to read about your car, yet to see the final product in your sig, ruined the suspense. Love to see people from around Tulsa, I just moved away last year. -Evan psyyambmw 08-17-2007, 02:36 AM i may have a couple photos of the engine, but it's nothing special. looks pretty much like the one before except the M badging. here's some from this weekend. thanks to Matt and M3Jhawk for sharing them with me. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/Hallett7.jpg WOOOOOOOOW! SO SWEET LIP, MAN! :alright adore U :worship: zector 08-17-2007, 03:10 AM first timei see bimmer with those seats jmitro 08-17-2007, 10:21 AM thanks guys. it was a work in progress for over a year, now it's just maintenance and development of brakes, suspension, etc.. i spent about 6 months working on the car almost every night....sanding, painting, rollcage, motor, etc. sPoofe36 08-17-2007, 04:53 PM Your living my dream... I want to build a late model BMW track car myself so bad... Your looks very hot too... What do you mean though by development of brakes/suspension? jmitro 08-17-2007, 06:09 PM same as "real" racecar development.....basically a trial and error process to see what works best and produces the best results. vdshenoy 09-03-2007, 10:32 PM Just went through this entire thread....man BEAUTIFUL car you have. Hope the parts I'll be sending you this week make a nice addition to the car.... P.S.: are you planning on keeping the "Eddie" decal? http://www.elk.itu.edu.tr/%7Eustun/smiley_ed.gif jmitro 09-03-2007, 11:03 PM lol, thanks, but probably won't keep the "eddie" decal on there. i must confess ignorance as to who eddie is. another excuse to add more photos. I got my new front fenders repainted this week, just waiting for paint to cure to put on the decals. Also, new brakes went on this week, UUC's Wilwood 4 piston calipers front/rear with Performance Friction front rotors and PFC01 pads all around. these will rock http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0028.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0029-1.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0030-1.jpg busterhax 09-03-2007, 11:05 PM whered you get that brake duct hose? its expensive everywhere i look deep throat 09-04-2007, 05:27 AM When would you post a video?? vdshenoy 09-04-2007, 01:00 PM lol, thanks, but probably won't keep the "eddie" decal on there. i must confess ignorance as to who eddie is. Nice brakes....now you can stop better with all that crazy horsepower! Wikied (I'm gonna make that a word - defined as searched on wikipedia) it for ya - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_the_Head Ven jmitro 09-06-2007, 09:01 PM ah, ok, i know who eddie is now. I do like iron maiden as well as some of the other old school heavy metal. still looks kinda funny on a race car though. i'll post some race videos when i figure out how to. also, the brake ducting IS expensive. i've purchased from several vendors including pegasusautoracing.com and og racing. you can also get 3" drier hose at the local hardware store if you want something cheap but not necessarily durable. 325icintn 09-06-2007, 10:23 PM I hope you will update this great thread with race results, both to show that this accessible car can compete and to show you're progression with it. Congrats and great job psyyambmw 09-13-2007, 05:02 AM a few final photos to add the carbon fiber PTG wing I just got today.....thanks phily. Stoggs.....the stock weight is around 3200 lbs. the car's race weight with half tank of gas is 2790. without the rollcage and added safety features the car probably lost over 400 lbs. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0001.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0003.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0004-1.jpg More rear pics w/ PTG wing pls. on the track would be nice :firedevil By the way where did you get it? Lexan windows all around (still haven't got the front windshield in yet) and I've been working on my front splitter project. Also, replaced the front headlights with MASHaw carbon fiber headlight blanks and duct, added DTM lightweight manual mirrors, stripped the doors out completely. Front hood and rear trunklid are now carbon fiber, I've stripped a lot of weight out of the car, and plan to get it weighed in the next month or so. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0058-1.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0060-1.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0061-1.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0050.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0053.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0055.jpg Gofast 12-13-2007, 10:31 AM http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0055.jpg Just curious, but how do you hold the door shut securely after doing this? jmitro 12-13-2007, 10:54 AM look closely, it's got aluminum pins at the top corner and bottom corner of the door. all doors except the driver's door are held on this way JDBlack7 12-13-2007, 11:55 AM I've read your thread before and I think you did a amazing job on your track car. It's a real inspiration for others for sure. I forgot if I read it or not in your post, but did you install the subframe support braces. Also, did welding in your roll cage strengthen chassis a lot? Again, great job! Zakkkaliscious 12-17-2007, 01:09 AM dang, im sad now that im at the end...... i love your car jmitro 01-31-2008, 11:15 PM A few final additions as the car is nearly complete the way I want it for now. I'd guess the car is around 2450-2500lbs with half tank of fuel. it's getting weighed and corner balanced next weekend. deep throat 02-01-2008, 03:12 AM Just the way i'd do mine, with some twists from you....I'd love to watch a video of it. tfro 02-01-2008, 10:35 AM A few final additions as the car is nearly complete the way I want it for now. Grand-Am cup just called, they said you can run with them this season, start laying the CF body! Great build, lots of ambition in the past year or so! Im at the earlier stages of what you have done and it was nice to see this thread, thanks for the pictures and info! Josh jmitro 02-10-2008, 10:03 PM Thanks for all the compliments. I anticipate this to be the last, or very close to last, post. The car weighed in at 2440 lbs yesterday with 3/8 tank of fuel. Without driver. I still haven't done the rollcage-to-subframe reinforcements yet, and haven't removed any of the undercoating. There may be a few other pounds to remove, but I anticipate the final weight will be around 2450 lbs with 1/4 tank of fuel on DOT tires, probably closer to 2400 with slicks. Still need to install the G2X and then it's off to another race season. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/004.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/009.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/015.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/012.jpg jmitro 02-10-2008, 10:07 PM More photos, revised interior with right side helmet net and relocated battery. Hugo D 02-24-2008, 04:52 PM Nice Car, I had a MAShaw wing on my e30 M3 and the quality is very good. vdshenoy 02-29-2008, 05:08 PM http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_0053.jpg Hahahha I still have that same gold yellow spray paint left over in my garage from when I painted those doors lol - I just saw them sitting in the corner last night. y2khris 03-06-2008, 12:17 AM jmitro I was searching for some weight reduction information and I've found the ultimate guide to anything I'd ever want to do to my E36. I am having a tough time finding 1-piece rod end brackets. Where did you get yours for your front splitter? best I can find is p/n 4952K117 from mcmaster, but they're are 2-piece & slotted jmitro 03-17-2008, 02:00 PM I got mine from apr performance who sells wings, splitters, and such. you can also get them from longacre I believe NASA race report.....barely got the car finished up for the race weekend, but had multiple problems. chiefly being the bad driveshaft vibration from my 6 speed swap. also, no tach, battery problems and other things. car weighed 2670 lbs with me in it but I don't know what the fuel load was since the fuel gauge wasn't working. I ran 4 seconds slower per lap than last year with 300lbs extra :( more photos to follow tfro 03-17-2008, 03:02 PM You have a 6 speed now? No one can keep up with you and your deal hunting. M3 Muscle 03-17-2008, 07:34 PM I ran 4 seconds slower per lap than last year with 300lbs extra :( Did you every get the car re-corner balanced after the scale mishap? jmitro 03-18-2008, 12:07 AM Yep, euro 6 speed with the 3.91 diff so I can still have revs at TWS. that gearbox wasn't exactly a steal, though. Colin, was scheduled for a corner balance Friday but the drive time to TX and the dyno put me behind schedule, so I never got it done again. More pics: next up, adding some flares so my tires don't rub. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/009-Copy.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/007-Copy.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/014-Copy.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/018.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/022.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/023-Copy.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/021.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/026-Copy.jpg sprbxr 03-18-2008, 12:16 AM What digital gauge are you using? Correct....G2X. i painted the interior with (gasp) rustoleum primer and gray spray paint tfro.....yep, i had about 5 hours of wiring ahead of me at that photo, and as you saw it's still a mess. kevc911 03-26-2008, 11:12 AM Build looks awesome! RedE30iS 04-09-2008, 10:00 PM So I literally just read through your entire thread, and page after page I kept getting this "WOW" going off in my head. Seriously, intense build there. Those last pictures you posted really shows the aggressive transformation your car has gone through. It seemed like every other post you had, you were really stepping it up, AND you kept fooling yourself into believe you were staying in J-Stock.. Let's compare for everyones sake: http://forums.rennlist.com/upload/img_0006.jpg To this.... http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/021.jpg I thoroughly enjoyed the hour or so I spent going through this thread. And it truly is inspiring, now go pwn up BMWCCA: Do it. -Dan The Fello 04-10-2008, 02:51 AM looks like the corner lights are the only thing untouched! nice built! RedE30iS 04-10-2008, 03:28 AM And front kidney grills..haha. KEEP EM CHROME! jmitro 04-10-2008, 09:34 AM thanks. with each part of the build I became more interested in progessing the development and then finally wanted to actually race it, not just track it. hence the final (never completely done) product :) vdshenoy 04-11-2008, 07:09 AM Holy cow! That car is looking GORGEOUS. I might just have to steal your paint design lol. I like it. I'll do it in other colors though, so don't worry... Joseph, you know these holes you have drilled into the bottom of your door jambs.....do you know if those panels are structural...I was planning on doing that on my car too, but remember, I don't have a cage, so every structural panel remains un-touched. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/018.jpg Where did you get your lexan for the front windshilf from? Or did you fab it yourself? What kind of lexan is it? Does it scratch easily? The home depot lexan I have for my rear is COVERED in scratches already....just from wiping it down. What kind of vertical supports are those on your lexan? http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/021.jpg jmitro 04-11-2008, 09:38 AM thanks Ven. in my (uneducated) opinion the doorjambs aren't structural enough to be compromised with the holes, but in your case I don't think the risk/benefit ratio would be in favor of holes without the cage. I got my lexan from Racingshields.com. Oversize, I had to cut it down. I bought 3/16" but you can get 1/8" as well. the supports are simple aluminum stock from Ace Hardware, riveted to the windows. L-brackets inside, flat stock outside bjhines 04-11-2008, 12:02 PM Nice build!!! You might be able to strengthen the rocker boxes while lightening them at the same time. Mittler Bros tools. Look in the list at "Flare Tools". http://www.mittlerbros.com/ You can increase strength as well. I played around a little with the 1" sized flares. http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/bjhines/V8%20240Z%20project/roll%20cage/Towerbraceboxes.jpg http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f127/bjhines/V8%20240Z%20project/roll%20cage/strutboxes.jpg philsans5 04-11-2008, 01:29 PM The problem with the dimpler is getting it in. It's too big to get the back piece inside. My next step for my car is to start replacing frames with cage so any stock sheet metal will be replaced with new panels tha I can cut and dimple before welding on. With the minimum holes JM has, no worries. Ved, DO NOT do that without a cage. My theory is still being tested, and I'm not sure it hasn't moved flex points to the floor boards. LukasM 04-14-2008, 04:42 AM Where did you get your lexan for the front windshilf from? Or did you fab it yourself? What kind of lexan is it? Does it scratch easily? The home depot lexan I have for my rear is COVERED in scratches already....just from wiping it down. What kind of vertical supports are those on your lexan? You should look at getting a sheet of MR10. It's a coated Lexan that is very scratch resistant. A friend has it on the windshield of his Cobra and it still looks great even with occasional wiper use. One place in the States that probably has it and could maybe even help you put it in the car is TAP plastics. dallas02E39 04-17-2008, 10:45 AM So Joseph are you coming to MSR-Cresson for the club races on 4/25-27? jmitro 04-17-2008, 11:11 AM Yep, I plan on it. I'll look for you there. mmpete0131 04-22-2008, 08:29 PM I have really enjoyed reading through this thread! Very inspiring! Makes me want to gut my 328i to the bone and make it a complete track car. Thanks for all the time you obviously spent in taking the pics. 'preciate ya!! speedster 04-23-2008, 03:34 PM joseph, i saw your car at eurosport monday when i stopped by to get my shirts ordered. Car looks much better from the last time i got to see it, glad to see it has come so far! jmitro 04-23-2008, 06:24 PM thanks, hopefully it works so I can actually race it this weekend. last two weekends have been a bust :eyecrazy jmitro 05-26-2008, 11:02 PM thanks to iflytii, I got some photos of the race weekend at Hallett this weekend. Still have a severe mechanical vibration that I believe is coming from either the tranny or the differential from Metrix. Been fighting this for 3 months with no improvement despite new parts (see below). I decided to go ahead and drive best I could this weekend anyway, and the car made it, but my hands got numb in the 12 lap feature race from the vibration coming through the chassis  What's new? Brand new multi-disc 5.5" race clutch and flywheel (11 lbs) from Bimmerworld, rebuilt and balanced driveshaft from Driveline of Portland, 18x9 SSR wheels with Yokohama slicks, new polyurethance motor and tranny mounts, driveshaft center bearing, and a few minor things. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_3745.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_3739.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_3728.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_3786.jpg AirDoc 05-26-2008, 11:24 PM Car looks nice....a bit of grip there eh?.....Bicycling.. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_3786.jpg jmitro 05-26-2008, 11:27 PM thanks, yea I kinda liked that photo, too, except I was probably assisted by bouncing over the rumble strip. Steve J. 05-26-2008, 11:48 PM I think the point is to keep all 4 wheels on the ground ;) Did you get the 2 or 3 disc clutch? Are you planning to do solid trans/engine mounts in the future, or is it a rules/class thing? I'm diggin the wagon! jmitro 05-27-2008, 12:21 AM I think the point is to keep all 4 wheels on the ground ;) Did you get the 2 or 3 disc clutch? Are you planning to do solid trans/engine mounts in the future, or is it a rules/class thing? I'm diggin the wagon! 4 wheels is only more rolling resistance ;) 2 disc clutch AFAIK. Clutchmasters FX700, recommended by Bimmerworld. solid mounts....it's a long story, but no, i switched back from solid aluminum to polyurethane. basically, the vibration I am STILL having was initially thought to be due to the solid mounts. in trying to track down the cause of my drivetrain vibration, that was one of the things I first changed, but it didn't help. i'm sticking with polyurethane, as recommended by another long time CCA mod racer. vdshenoy 05-27-2008, 01:56 PM http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_3745.jpg I see you got the flares done just like my old car!!! SWEET!!! I think my brother and I started a craze for these Nissan flares on BMWs lol....this is awesome. lol -Before us everyone was spending close hundreds to thousands more to get BMW flares lol... Did you get them CF or FBG?? PS: Flare set up looks the same huh lol ;) http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/vdshenoy/Hot%20Summer%20Nights%204/P8182998.jpg jmitro 05-27-2008, 02:43 PM yea, I got the idea for the flares from you. :alright fiberglass is cheaper to replace when (not if) they get banged up. vdshenoy 05-27-2008, 04:55 PM yea, I got the idea for the flares from you. :alright fiberglass is cheaper to replace when (not if) they get banged up. Yep - exactly the reason my new car has FBG flares as well. They are sturdier too! The CF ones are kinda flimsy. They might weigh a total of 1.5 to 2 lbs more over the 4 flares, but I think it's worth that. My CF ones had developed tiny fissures in the surface of the clear coat from hitting stuff and me walking into it lol... :duh: Plus these are WAY easier to prep and paint...I got a shiny perfect black paint coat on my new FBG ones. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a120/vdshenoy/BMW%20Rebuild/vinyl001.jpg Ven DatATX 05-29-2008, 02:10 PM jmitro, Have you started building on the E36 M3 chassis you bought? Removed the rear suspension (once again), and replaced that with the delrin bushing and all is good. With SRiley driving, the car ran a 1:51 at TWS in scorching heat with used slicks. Minor changes: I added a new wing and 1/4" thick aluminum mounts. Also found a great deal on a brand new Recaro HANS seat for $1000, so I'm switching the old seat to the passenger side for instructor/passenger rides. Working on a new stainless exhaust, hopefully making it modular so I can switch from rear exit to side exit and back if needed. Other minor changes: new improved window net mounting, removed the A pillar support bars and added them as gussets under the B pillar, and different location for the fire bottle. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_4333.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/IMG_4334.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/048.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/045.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/043.jpg SRiley 08-10-2008, 10:05 PM Finally detemined that my driveline vibration was from a bad front diff bushing. Don't forget the software glitch that limited the engine to 6,200 rpms. This is a well-built car that is very easy to drive at limit. Very impressive especially given the fact that jmitro built it himself at home. warptkid 08-11-2008, 02:43 PM Also found a great deal on a brand new Recaro HANS seat for $1000, so I'm switching the old seat to the passenger side for instructor/passenger rides. Chris....i've ditched the side exit exhaust for now. sticking with rear exit so I can run a passenger seat. the wing came from an ebay vendor named Key Composites osborni 08-11-2008, 04:21 PM Not an expert.... Your wing's AOA looks pretty steep. Do you have any data on it? Putting some oil on the bottom and going for a spin might help out a lot.... jmitro 08-11-2008, 04:33 PM yea, but it's actually not. the rear end of the car was jacked up for these photos, plus the angle of the photos makes it look very steep. currently it's set on the middle setting. Key told me the wing shape was patterned after a specific model tested on something-or-other, but I can't remember exactly what now... warptkid 08-11-2008, 06:22 PM Putting some oil on the bottom and going for a spin might help out a lot.... what are you looking for when you do this? oil to reach the tail of the spoiler?? osborni 08-11-2008, 06:46 PM If the oil pools then you have flow separation and the wing has stalled. If it flows to the end of the wing, then the air flow is fully attached. jmitro 08-11-2008, 08:42 PM good idea, i might try that, although i'd be willing to bet it's not at stall at this angle. BobWright 08-18-2008, 08:16 AM Damn Joe.....get some sleep......sounds like you are going at it 24/7....:) Are you coming to Ofest? jmitro 08-19-2008, 10:25 PM seems 24/7 sometimes, although I finally have it done for the track this weekend. Still have more to do later. Won't make Ofest unfortunately. wish I could go that far :( BobWright 08-20-2008, 07:26 AM awwww...OK...I know it is a LONG Haul from OK. It made my weekend!!! -Michael jmitro 08-26-2008, 10:10 PM thanks guys. Michael, glad to let you drive it and see what the car can really do in the hands of someone more skillful than me. BMWParkingOnly 08-28-2008, 11:00 AM Hallett on Sunday afternoon - you passed a white e36 M3 (me) between 6 and 7 just after it passed another car. You got a point from me, made a nice (late, but perfectly acceptable) 2 car pass and then got black flagged. Why did they pull you in? Then I got the meatball flag on the same lap as my hood wasn't fully latched! DOH! In any case, you (or the driver of your car as it sounds like there was more than 1) should be able to carry a lot more speed through 7/8/9. :) Cheers, Chet Dawes jmitro 08-28-2008, 01:15 PM actually they were flagging you for the hood, i just thought it was for me. it was me driving with Michael Leiberman riding along, i don't remember the exact circumstances but I think I slowed down around that turn looking at the black flag and wondering if it was for me. in any event, I definitely have more speed to learn, as Michael drove the car faster than I did, and he wasn't "getting on it" (yea right :D ) BMWParkingOnly 08-28-2008, 01:47 PM actually they were flagging you for the hood, i just thought it was for me. it was me driving with Michael Leiberman riding along, i don't remember the exact circumstances but I think I slowed down around that turn looking at the black flag and wondering if it was for me. in any event, I definitely have more speed to learn, as Michael drove the car faster than I did, and he wasn't "getting on it" (yea right :D ) I wondered as soon as I saw the meatball at the next flag station if that blag flag wasn't intended for me. But he had the flag rolled up, was putting it away and wasn't looking at me as he was in my view. Sorry man, didn't mean to screw up your session! You were flying pretty well out there, what were some of your lap times? It seems each time I was within sight of your car I had one of my students (or someone else) in my car and we were at a reduced 'teaching' pace so I was a bit of a rolling chicane for you probably. I only video taped a couple of sessions but I put a bunch of low 1:34's and a high 1:33 or two in for lap times with a ~200lb passenger. I was happy having never been to Hallett before and considering I was running some very old rubber (~30 heat cycle 3 season old Hoosiers which I finally have given up on) on a stock motor, etc. That's certainly a fun little roller coaster of a track! Cheers, Chet (sorry to hi-jack your build thread, now back to our usual topics of car prep) jmitro 08-28-2008, 02:37 PM no problem. :) did you have the white 95 with a rollbar and harnesses and stripped out rearend? i was checking it out my best for the weekend was around 1:28 with passenger, Michael drove a few 1:27s, with passengers. My best times out there have been 1:26s. the car can probably do 1:24 if I can learn to drive it. I recognized your car from this build thread but it would have been cool to put a face to the name, etc. I guess I could have said hello to you too..... Nice looking Henna e30 M3 near your paddock spot! I didn't get much track time on Sat between instructing, etc. and I ended up running more in your run group on Sunday actually as it fit my student schedule better. Not to mention you guys were 'playing much nicer' than a few of the P-car instructors. I know I still have a few seconds/lap on the table between tires and learning the little tricks at Hallett but the car was working pretty well for what it is. I picked up a few tidbits running the opposite direction during the parade laps and subsequent watching of in-car footage, etc. But 1:24's would be FLYING, heck 1:26's is smoking fast. I'd like to have ridden with one of the regulars there as I pretty much taught myself the track in a couple of sessions on Friday. Anyway, I had a great time. Again, sorry for the 'pause' in your session on account of my brain failing me. zinda 08-28-2008, 08:37 PM WOW! i just read through the whole thread, and this is inspiration to anyone!!! makes me wanna build something now lol.... AWESOME JOB man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! keep at it! jmitro 09-03-2008, 05:44 PM thanks. I determined at my last event the new wing wasn't mounted well. i had to move the uprights back to the center of the wing where it was reinforced. Made a new brace in the trunk to bolt the wing uprights to. The trunk is currently getting repaired and repainted, and I'll cut some slots in it so the aluminum uprights will pass through the trunk and bolt to the brace I made. At least my new passenger seat worked fine, but I'm also repainting another door that has a latch instead of the pins. Won't have to crawl out the passenger window anymore :D http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/028.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/029.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/025-1.jpg LWRNCE 09-07-2008, 09:15 PM sick. jmitro 09-13-2008, 07:45 PM spent some time making custom wing uprights that pass through the trunklid and bolt to the square frame shown above. Also got the trunklid repaired and repainted, along with the new door in place. Skinned the carbon fiber/fiberglass trunklid of all the structure, now it weighs about 3 lbs for the total trunk structure. Precision Custom paint and body here in Duncan did an excellent job repairing the trunk, made it look just like new. http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/001-2.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/002.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/004-2.jpg http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/jmitro2000/005-2.jpg s1ick 09-13-2008, 08:02 PM How do you open the trunk ;) busterhax 09-13-2008, 08:06 PM why not make the cuts for the trunk go all the way down the back of the trunk?...oh wait now that i look i see you arent using the hinges deep throat 09-13-2008, 08:08 PM Why using this wing setup? Really curious... thats how most race car's wings are mounted Greg S 09-13-2008, 09:16 PM Maybe it's the angle of the photo, but that looks like a very aggressive AOA. What's the minimum AOA? jmitro 09-13-2008, 09:37 PM How do you open the trunk ;) you don't....no need to open it except to change light bulbs or something like that ;) Why using this wing setup? Really curious... as opposed to what wing setup? the PTG style wing was heavier and less efficient. Maybe it's the angle of the photo, but that looks like a very aggressive AOA. What's the minimum AOA? it's the angle of the photo. It's on the medium setting; lowest setting puts the endplates horizontal and the wing is close to horizontal. Greg S 09-13-2008, 09:39 PM Cool, you're going to be at MSR next weekend, right? I'll probably stop by and make race cars noises. jmitro 09-13-2008, 09:42 PM LOL, yeah. DLS coaching. you want me to bring that piece of alumalite? Greg S 09-13-2008, 10:07 PM LOL, yeah. DLS coaching. you want me to bring that piece of alumalite? Um, how much do you want for it? I may be able to make a multi piece splitter or something. deep throat 09-14-2008, 12:29 PM As opposed to mounting it directly on the trunk, I haven't seen this setup before that's why I'm interested in it's advanatges over normal mounting.. jmitro 09-14-2008, 02:59 PM gotcha. my trunk is carbon fiber/fiberglass and skinned flat. no way it would be strong enough to mount a wing to. plus I want the force from the wing to be transmitted directly to the frame rails instead of going through the trunk mounts, fenders, and finally to the suspension and wheels. it's probably no more effective than a good trunk mount like the bimmerworld wing and mounts, but my trunk wouldn't hold up to that force. BTW, Greg...I did lower the wing down to the lowest setting after thinking about the AOA deep throat 09-14-2008, 05:07 PM Thanks for the lesson J ;) Greg S 09-14-2008, 08:43 PM BTW, Greg...I did lower the wing down to the lowest setting after thinking about the AOA At MSR-C a little extra AOA will probably help(ricochet, tombstone, big bend and some others), but at ECR I think you're going to want the lowest setting as there's only one corner that I think it would be effective on(4(down hill, off camber, right)). I'm contemplating even installing my wing before ECR as I don't think it's going to help me there. savage217 09-16-2008, 11:06 PM Wow, I just found this thread. Your car is amazing. Thanks Josh jmitro 09-17-2008, 10:00 PM thanks, I'm an OB/GYN. been in surgery all day, just getting back to the forums. the wing is made by Key Composites. if you search for rear wings on ebay, you should be able to find them....they have a photo of the rear end of a yellow C6 corvette as their photo for all the ads. tfro 09-17-2008, 10:26 PM At MSR-C a little extra AOA will probably help(ricochet, tombstone, big bend and some others), but at ECR I think you're going to want the lowest setting as there's only one corner that I think it would be effective on(4(down hill, off camber, right)). I'm contemplating even installing my wing before ECR as I don't think it's going to help me there. I think it'd be helpful for 1 through 5, not so much in 6 through 8, but 9 and 10 are pretty fast, 11 probably not. At least thats what the data for my car suggests. Greg S 09-17-2008, 10:34 PM I think it'd be helpful for 1 through 5, not so much in 6 through 8, but 9 and 10 are pretty fast, 11 probably not. At least thats what the data for my car suggests. I'm not arguing that it'll be helpful in the turns(by how much is questionable in a lot of those turns IMO). More worried about losing that time due to drag on the straight. jmitro 09-18-2008, 09:42 AM How much would you charge to make another set of those uprights? just saw your question. the uprights are custom, made to fit my car and my wing, so they may not work for your application. you can make your own by purchasing a sheet of 1/4" 6061 aluminum and cutting them yourself. or get a machine shop to do it. i got mine off metalsonline.com for $120 for a 12"x36" sheet More worried about losing that time due to drag on the straight. you really think you'll lose time due to drag? what's the top speed you'll see? if you were doing 160 down VIR I could see a concern for drag, but on a short straightaway (I haven't been to ECR yet) you'd probably not lose much. OTOH, the gains in the corners from a wing are probably just as minimal. i just have a wing for looks :D Greg S 09-18-2008, 03:03 PM what's the top speed you'll see? In your car I'd guess about 125mph. tfro 09-18-2008, 04:30 PM In your car I'd guess about 125mph. I'll look at the data tonight, but that sounds pretty close, maybe slightly high :) Edit: The most i was seeing was the low 11Xs, so take that how you want I guess. jmitro 09-24-2008, 11:08 PM new photo from this last weekend, courtesy of Hart Photography. new wing is in place and worked great, car was handling well, and I got some great coaching (thanks VR/CH) to get past the hump I've been stuck on. Also got some 250/650/18yoko slicks from a local 997 cup car for $25 each. :eyecrazy:buttrock. Unfortunately my GPS was getting intermittent power throughout the weekend, so I didn't get a consistent lap time recording or top speed.
