Friend of mine got a set of used RA1s and ran it at autocros... this is
how the thread looks like after 1 day. He's wondering if the tires are
totally gone. Not knowing anything about R-comps... I figure I turn
to the track experts on this board. :)

I would say they look good for some more auto-x runs or maybe another day at the track. They are good down to the cords.

Generally RA1s are still good as long as the grooves are there. Most R compounds will not have "tread" in the normal sense, like street tires do. Some do (Nitto 555RIIs for example, or Yoko A032s) but many melt down to what you see there.

He has 1 set of wheels+tires though... He'll be using it for autox only.
The drive to the autox event is 60 miles round trip...
If he run til the tires cord.. he will have to drive them back on the corded tires..
thats ok?

I've done that with RA-1s before. Mine were showing cord in a few spots on the outer shoulder of the tire (a result of autocrossing with very little negative camber). I made the drive home (~90 miles) without issue. It wasn't ideal, but I figured since the corded section of tire wasn't a section in constant contact with the road, it'd be okay. I lived to tell the tale.
