For cleaning in tight spaces you can use a paintbrush with tape over the metal parts (to prevent accidental scratches). You might try sealing them with wax to make them even easier to clean. There are a couple of brands of wheel wax out there, but I've heard of people using regular wax too with no problems (maybe less durability). hnoppenberger 04-30-2006, 08:53 PM i use simple green foam (if i can find it, so damn good) and simple green spary which is easier to find. i then use a old cotton wash mit and follow up with a microfiber dry and then a NXT spray wax aplication everytime i wash the wheels. when the wheels are stubborn i use a clay bar on them. mikey36m3 04-30-2006, 11:16 PM i use simple green foam (if i can find it, so damn good) and simple green spary which is easier to find. i then use a old cotton wash mit and follow up with a microfiber dry and then a NXT spray wax aplication everytime i wash the wheels. when the wheels are stubborn i use a clay bar on them. I like that spray wax idea for the wheels.. Landerholm 05-01-2006, 10:15 PM Do not use Simple Green on your wheels. There was a big scandal about it on here. (Well, as big as scandals get around here). It harms the alloy or strips the finish or something? That "BBS Safe Wheel Cleaner" is what I use. Vinci 05-02-2006, 02:03 PM The Simple Green spectacle is completely out of context, and now everyone takes it as gospel. Simple Green can damage bare aluminum if exposed to it for extended periods. This is what caused the millitary to ban its use in the motor pool. Use on sealed/finished surfaces, such as wheels, will not damage the wheel. Even if you had bare aluminum wheels and used the stuff on them, I really can't see it causing any harm if it were rinsed off immediately after scrubbing the wheel down. As for cleaning 3-piece wheels, I would think that a spray cleaner of some sort would help loosen dirt that was caught around the lip bolts, and a soft-bristled brush would take care of everything. awahl63 05-02-2006, 05:47 PM Simple Green can damage bare aluminum if exposed to it for extended periods. Yup, I really don't see a problem with using it to clean wheels if you don't let it sit for very long. mikey36m3 05-02-2006, 07:08 PM Yup, I really don't see a problem with using it to clean wheels if you don't let it sit for very long. Black magic wheel cleaner works much better then simple green. JohnZ3MC 05-03-2006, 12:47 AM Eagle 1 wheel and tire cleaner does a great job cleaning wheels also. As for protection, most any wax or sealant will help keep brake dust from settling and I'm partial to sealants just because they're tougher and last longer than waxes. I'm going to try FK 425, a super good quick detailer on the roadstars. I use it on the coupe anyway. As a QD, it adds shine, slickness and antistatic properties. The shine won't be noticeable probably but the slickness and antistatic might make a small difference in regular wheel maintenance. -John C. The Beastmaster 05-04-2006, 01:37 AM I use a commercial product from Mark V called R.E.D. I dilute it 1:3 with water and apply with a spray bottle. Let sit for a few minutes, spray with water then agitate with a bristle brush. Simply hose off and dry. Works great with my Fittipaldis, Style 5s and DS1s. twhlax3 05-05-2006, 06:14 PM i spent a good 3 hours polishing my hre's with aluminum wadding polish. it was a PITA but now they're looking great. they're full poilsh by the way, but the wadding polish would work well on the lip of your rim. Mister X 05-05-2006, 06:32 PM Meguiars has a new multipiece wheel cleaner, I got some, but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. |
