View Full Version : Side exit exhaust ....
onasled 04-30-2006, 04:26 PM Question about side exit exhaust in Modified. Is there any rule about exit location?
Is it in fact legal to exit through rocker panel, as rules state that factory rocker panels must be used.
I filed this photo that I found here. This is the model for what we will do, but I just want to confirm legality. Also wondering about SCCA ruling on this if anyone knows.
Thanks.

Steve J. 04-30-2006, 05:35 PM I assume SCCA ITE?
I think the only regulation I am familar with as far as exhuast placement is it has to be behind the driver.
In the above picture the factory rocker panels will be used, just modified.
You are in DM, so you should have no issues with modifying panels.
Just make sure you properly protect everything around it, exhuasts get very hot, and can start fires under the car if you are not careful.
Also, plan to be able to fit a muffler under there (and even an extra muffled if needed, in combination with a turndown/etc for those very quiet tracks) because it will be loud.
FierySphere 04-30-2006, 06:05 PM Some friendly advice regarding rules clarification:
I strongly suggest that *you* find the appropriate clauses in the rulebooks for the appropriate series you are going to run in.
And then check with a technical representative for those series.
Everything else leads to frustration and added expense.
I'm just saying ....
Steve J. 04-30-2006, 06:11 PM Yep, many people already run side exhuast and are legally classified. So go by the rules and what has been proven to pass in your region.
Depending how low your car is, you can always run low profile oval tubing as a side exhuast.

Thank you Steve. Yes, ITE as that's the only place to run a modified Mini S in SCCA. Don't know that I'll go there but want to cover myself in case I do or the next guy does.
As far as behind the driver, I did hear that but have yet to find it in the SCCA rulebook (not that I've combed over the whole book yet). I gather though that this is not a BMWCCA requirement?
As far as heat and noise, we have that all under control. :alright
snowmann 04-30-2006, 06:48 PM read the IT rules... the Production rules... they all have parts about exhaust... or maybe it was in the general rules... I dont recall but there is a rule about having the exhaust behind the driver... not sure about BMWCCA though...
ANNDD since ITE is mandated by region rules you will have to check with your region for paticular cases but since ITE in most regions is a catchall for pro cars and anything else you SHOULD be fine...
but no promises
Steve J. 04-30-2006, 07:15 PM As far as I have seen, for the most part, as long as its safe, it'll fly in ITE :)
As for BMWCCA, side exhuast should not go against any rules.
If you have it exit towards the back of the rocker panel, on the passenger side, you should be safe.
And Mr. ryanjames hows the green monster coming along?
onasled 04-30-2006, 07:35 PM My problem is that my seat is so far back, that in a Mini it gets a bit tough to get the exhaust behind that seat location and the wheel well. :rolleyes

Well, it depends on what the definition of "driver" is. If its where the center of the seat is, or where the drivers head is, or some other dimensional reference.
Basically, if you route it out the passenger side at the rear most point on the rocker panel, you will be fine.
Just curious, any reason you want side exhuast specifically?
onasled 04-30-2006, 10:17 PM Steve, No other place for it to really go with the install of the fuel cell now blocking the original path, which was down the center of the car.
Steve J. 04-30-2006, 10:52 PM Hmm, well looks to me right behind where the door is the exhuast can exit on the passenger side without any problems.
You can even make it angled with the tip protruding from that little flare at the same angle so it looks as if its flush...would look pretty slick!
Also, where are some recent pics of the project? :)

Things seem slow right now as my builders are into their race season. Just trying not to rush things anyway.
