View Full Version : Egs Control Unit
flight12 04-28-2006, 10:48 PM i need a new egs control unit. i had my car checked out for the trans malfunction code coming on and i need a new egs control unit to get rid of the problem. any opinions on the findings?
also, does anyone know anybody selling theirs?
The Beastmaster 04-28-2006, 11:11 PM Who diagnosed the problem and what is an EGS control unit?
kailuaboy 04-29-2006, 01:03 AM egs= electronic transmission control
flight12 05-01-2006, 11:35 PM BME diagnosed it....but apparently, after picking up the car today, the problem isn't the EGS. they ended up servicing my trans completely and ripped me a new one for it...but my trans malf. is gone now.
The Beastmaster 05-02-2006, 12:05 AM How much was the trans service? It shouldn't be more than a couple hundred.
oasay07808 05-03-2006, 01:38 AM I was tryin to find out where it was to see if mine was still good ... sorry i couldn't help you man ...
flight12 05-03-2006, 07:16 PM i'm still tryin to find where it is too. thanks anyway ryan.
btw, i got ripped. charged me 400 just for labor. cuz they were "tryin" to find the problem. everytime they thought of something, they said they were 99.9% sure it was it. i'm just glad the car's back up again.
rennwerkes 05-03-2006, 10:42 PM Trouble shooting is a tough thing to do especially when it's electrical. I'm not trying to justify what they charged you but it's never an exact science. Sometimes there's alot of trial and error involved and there's got to be some compensation for it.
However, with shops like BMW and Voytek who use the proper scanners and are supposed to have the correct background you'd think they'd be able to solve a problem faster than anyone. Keep in mind that with what Voytek charges per hour I don't think they spent too much time doing the diagnosis and their auto trans service runs over $200 if I'm not mistaken.
You also could have taken it to someone else, got the wrong diagnosis and eventually spent more money in the end. I see it happening all the time.
The Beastmaster 05-03-2006, 11:02 PM I'm surprised that the diagnosis was a hit or miss proposition as BME has even more expertise on board. Glen Pestana, BMW of HONO Shop Foreman, moved over about a month ago.
flight12 05-04-2006, 05:18 AM I was just a little disappointed with the turnover time. Also, Tytus told me they were 99.9% sure of what was causing the problem TWICE. I knew it would cost a good sum of money, but also I was stuck without a car for a few days cuz of family members visiting and occupying all our cars. It was a big hassle and took 4 days to ultimately do just a tranny flush and a few tweaks inside the trans. I may have felt a bit better about the cost if it all went down in only a day or two.
rennwerkes 05-04-2006, 02:08 PM I hear you. That's why I think there's still a market for a shop that provides "fair" rates and good customer service.
However, believe it or not, when I was working on cars, very few folks seemed to care about or appreciate the great deals I gave them or the fact that I bent over backwards for them. I can't tell you the number of times I ran out to check someone's car on my own dime and all I got compensated for was what I charged them. Bottom line was that they just wanted a deal and at the end of the day they just said "SEE YAH!". I think that's why many shops can be unfeeling about customer's situations.
How's this for irony, the only person that gave me several hundred dollars extra for a job I did was a bar maid!!! She knew it would have cost her over $1000 to have the dealer do the work and when I charged her a bit over $300 she figured even if she gave me $500 it was still a deal. She did get it back later though!!! LOL!

IslandS62 05-04-2006, 04:10 PM Without knowing the full story, keep in mind that BME may not have worked on your tranny at all, but subcontracted it out. When I talked to them about doing some tranny work, I was told internal transmission work was sent to Kalakaua Transmission Service.
That said, all in all BME is probably the most capable BMW service shop in Hawaii.
