View Full Version : Window Net suggestions ///Mracer 04-28-2006, 01:19 PM I need suggestions on window nets for an IP car. Thanks, Matt LUTFY 04-28-2006, 02:05 PM I need suggestions on window nets for an IP car. Thanks, Matt Subscribe. I have a window net which I purchased from Discovery Parts www.discoveryparts.com That said, I have no idea how to install them/process or what other parts do I need. This is for an IS car with door panel in place. Thanks in advance. Ahmad ssburns 04-28-2006, 02:11 PM I have a Schroth net and mounting hardware from HMS. It's expensive, but seems to be the only mounting kit on the market that doesn't require welding to the cage and is FIA approved. There was a thread a couple weeks back about the difficulty in locating the Schroth latching tab as it needs to be perpendicular to the latch and how it lines up to the cage. I ended up mounting mine to the a-pillar to allow the correct angle and cover more of the window opening. ///Mracer 04-28-2006, 02:35 PM I have no problem welding mounting tabs if I have to. scottbm3 04-28-2006, 03:04 PM I have a Schroth net and mounting hardware from HMS. He will take care of you as well :) http://www.discoveryparts.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=restraints irace1 04-28-2006, 03:26 PM I have a Schroth net and mounting hardware from HMS. There was a thread a couple weeks back about the difficulty in locating the Schroth latching tab as it needs to be perpendicular to the latch and how it lines up to the cage. I ended up mounting mine to the a-pillar to allow the correct angle and cover more of the window opening. I started that discussion. I wanted to use the Schroth net because it doesn't require welding and the bottom will work with X-bars in the door. It has worked for several racers on this forum. However, the bend in the roll bar tubing at the A-pillar in my car did not allow me to cover enough of the window (my car is a 4-door). I wound up with a plan to use the Schroth net, but I bought the Bimmer World spring loaded mounting kit and this weekend, we are going to weld the top with the spring loaded bar and brackets from Bimmerworld and use the Schroth mounting on the bottom. Probably not the cheapest solution, but I think it will work. I wish I had known about Discoverparts.com before I bought several window nets to make one though.:rolleyes scottn2retro 04-28-2006, 03:31 PM We got the Pyrotech 'supernet' from Bimmerworld. Combination of mesh and straps and Ralph really likes it. https://secure13.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=bimmerworl&BusType=BtoC&Count1=566997706&Count2=484138131&CategoryID=18&Target=products.asp ssburns 04-28-2006, 04:05 PM Do you have a pic. Did post an outside pic on the previous thread. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=519204 Yep, I'll be a Putnam... in another Red E36 M3. sunir 04-28-2006, 05:11 PM Matt...I've got an M&R mesh net...it's all mesh so it's easier to look out of, but there are several on the market...I think it has to be SFI 27.1 or something specified in the rule book and it's gotta be a certain min size... so when are ya making your IP debut? :) Steve J. 04-28-2006, 05:16 PM With the Hans mandated, and people moving to formula type belts, I'd hihgly suggest the Fine Mesh. You can actually position it so you can see the side view mirror clear. With the wider nets that are straps i've seen several incidents where the driver gets stuck. ssburns 04-28-2006, 07:14 PM With the Hans mandated, and people moving to formula type belts, I'd hihgly suggest the Fine Mesh. Steve, Reasonable point, but with move to top latching nets, this "should" not be an issue..... unless of course you are upside down.:( ssburns 04-28-2006, 07:27 PM Do you have a pic. If you want, I can email them to you. scottbm3 04-28-2006, 08:05 PM Scott, I took some pics, but they are too large to post. If you want, I can email them to you. Thanks Steve J. 04-28-2006, 08:12 PM Steve, Reasonable point, but with move to top latching nets, this "should" not be an issue..... unless of course you are upside down.:( What do you mean "move to top latching nets," i'm only talking about top latching nets. Still pretty good potential to get caught up in the "web" when exiting. It really all comes down to how well the car is setup, and how the driver as involved in setting it up. Just takes some common sense and a little bit of planning to make it a safe system. That combination net looks pretty good, with the mesh in between, that's a good mix, but I think you lose a lot straight sideways visibility with that, compared to straight Mesh. With the current spec mesh only nets, it would be hard to punch through that, and thats basically what they are there for, so your body parts don't exit the car upon a rollover or side impact. ssburns 04-29-2006, 09:10 AM What do you mean "move to top latching nets," i'm only talking about top latching nets. Still pretty good potential to get caught up in the "web" when exiting. Steve, I'm still not picturing it. Release the net at the top, it falls down (assuming the car is rightside up). Unless I'm crawling out with my back resting on the door bars or door (if it won't open) I'm not picturing how the HANS gould get caught in the net. I can certainly see how this would happen with a bottom latching net thrown onto the roof. ///Mracer 05-01-2006, 09:25 AM so when are ya making your IP debut? :) plan on getting the cage done this summer, doing the watkin glen's race school in Sept. Maybe running a race or two in the fall if I get everything in order. ps. It will be an IP "lite" car with no cams or diff for now :( ///Mracer 05-01-2006, 09:26 AM thanks for the info everyone, I will look for a Mesh net. |
