I've got a 2001 X5 that is black. And since we have had the car (about a year) we've had this rainbow look on the outside of the door only around the windows and going to the outside edge of the door. It looks like it's ono the window rubber too.
I wonder if someone put something oily or something on those areas at one time or armorall? It's on all 4 doors.
Any idea what this is and how to get it off? I've tried just using mild auto soap and water and and scrubbing on it with a sponge.
A Clay bar maybe?

I don't think clay will be successful. Clay's good for removing embedded grit.
The rainbowing is probably some dealer applied window dressing like RainX or something like that, maybe a teflon product of some kind.
I'd try Klasse AIO. It's a great chemical cleaner and should be able to remove most any residue left on the clearcoat.
If the AIO doesn't work, I'd go for rubbing alcohol, (isopropyl), then anything in the kerosene family, wd40 or lighter fluid. Don't leave these things on the clear for any length of time though. Spritz them onto a microfiber cloth then apply to the clearcoat.
Rinse, then rewax / reseal after of course.
As for the window trim,
AIO there too, then this is going to sound strange, but peanut butter or peanut oil does a great job. No jam or marmalade though.
Meguiars #38 or others will finish up the exterior window trim, mirror housings, etc.

Thanks. I'll give it a shot.
