View Full Version : Beating Photo Radar
refplusten 04-23-2006, 05:13 PM Hey everyone...
Does any one have any experience with the VF2 or the VF4 photo radar jammer?

I wanna get one of these things but I'd sure like to know if they work out in real life.

WK446 04-26-2006, 01:07 PM I used to live in Alberta so I realize your dilemma. The unit you mentioned (The Enforcer) doesn't actually jam photo radar as any device that transmits on a frequency already designated is illegal. What it does is detect the photo radar frequency and trigger high powered LEDS to reflect off your rear licence plate (as front plates are not required in Alberta).
One of the inherent problems with this is contamination of your licence plate and contamination of the LED "flash" generators. Any contamination will cause degredation of the amount of energy that is either produced by the flash or reflected from you plate. This includes dirty water puddles, salt in winter, etc...
Also, in Alberta and other provinces, ANY device that prevents or interferes with a speed measuring device is illegal. If you look at what the Enforcer looks like, I think you'll agree with me that it is quite the "heat" magnet. It is VERY noticeable mounted on your rear licence plate. http://www.speedzones.com/special.html

refplusten 04-28-2006, 10:41 PM Yeah it sure is noticable isn't it... I asked the company about the VF4 because it's supposed to be able to be installed in your car's stock licence plate lights so you can't see it but it's going under some redesign. I wonder if i painted it the same colour as my car if it wouldn't stand out so bad?
MMmmmpower 04-29-2006, 04:01 PM Just get a plastic reflective cover over you license plate. I live in Alberta too and i can count about 4 or 5 times that i got photo radar, but because of the cover, the picture just has my plate with a flash over it so they cant nail me
refplusten 05-13-2006, 10:01 PM the only problem with that is that is obvious to the passing cruiser that half your plate is mirrored. My friend's old man got busted with one of those on his bike.
I just got the VF2 in the mail and it doesn't look as bad as the pics on speedzone.com because the housing with the licence plate lights covers half the device making look like it doesn't stick out so much. I have to modify the plate holder a bit so the plate is a little lower but it doesn't look too bad. The only prob that I have with the install is I have to wire it to the ignition wire in the steering wheel column and a ground. Does anyone have a wiring diagram of that area? Or steps to gain access to it? Know of a good grounding location in that area of the car?
Dickfruster 05-14-2006, 12:04 AM Jut dont pay them. The technology cant go to court. Put the thing in the garbage and if they harass you, say you never received anything and were never there. They cant take you to court about it! + a plastic cover works fine. I dont have the front plate number. And my rear plate number swings on a pivot with little actuator from a firebird.Takes a second to flip the plate number down. Its on my Trans Am thoug, so Iam not sure how it may work on a bimmer.
refplusten 05-14-2006, 12:38 PM Well since I have the VF2 I'll try using it and see what happens. I'll keep everyone informed on it but first things first... does anyone know how I can wire this thing in? It runs 12V and the fuse is for 8A. Any ideas for a DIYer?
refplusten 05-18-2006, 06:00 PM Anyone??? I need a 12V switched power source that I can connect to that can handle a draw of as much as 8 amps. I know of the Ignition wire in the steering area but would like to know if there is something easier like maybe in the trunk area?
BRBurn 06-16-2006, 08:52 PM I heard from a friend in BC that if you spray your plate with hairspray it will reflect the flash from the photo radar. Nothing to install and you can't get busted for having a plate cover. You would of course have to spray every time you wash the car or after a major rain. Has anybody tried this? Comments?
refplusten 06-28-2006, 12:17 PM I have heard the same rumours but haven't heard of it working. The way I drive sometime I don't think I'd chance it to hairspray.
MMmmmpower 06-28-2006, 08:14 PM I have a plastic cover plate and i sparyed it with hairspray.....and have yet to get photo since iv been driving
refplusten 06-29-2006, 09:48 AM What kind of hairspray do you use? Does it matter?
Have you ever seen the flash and thought... "Meh... I got the hairspray. No worries" or have you been just lucky?
MMmmmpower 06-29-2006, 06:58 PM Ummmmm the type of hairspray was finesse or something, i stole it from my sister, and yes i was doing 80 in a 50 zone once in st albert, didnt see the van and was flashed. Waited a couple weeks but no ticket showed up so as far as i know it works
Im not sure if hairspray will work by its self, i put it over a plastic licesene holder that is supposed to reflect photo anyway

Be warned however that this plastic covering device was required to be removed on my dads car when a cop was walking past his car. They didn't fine him or give him a ticket, they just took it and confiscated it.
It works like a charm though!
Mike
MMmmmpower 07-13-2006, 02:26 PM Yeah iv heard that too, but since putting it on iv been pulled over 3 or 4 times with no mention of it, maybe its just a matter of time
banjoman 08-06-2006, 10:07 PM how i beat the flash heee heee ,i put my plate in the rear windo,
there is no law that says you have to put on the bumper , onley once was i stoped for having the plate in the window , i just told the cop it fell of , a trick my buddy use's is to hang the plat on with one nut and bolt was to have the plate bent under , so the flas can only see 2/ 3 no,s
refplusten 08-08-2006, 12:43 AM Well I installed my VF2 and doesn't look too bad. None of my friends even noticed it there. Got pulled over for speeding (damn Laser... the M20 Blinder is first on the Xmas list!!!) and the cop was standing behind the car writing my licence plate down and didn't even notice it. Booya!
I just figured out how to configure my digital camera to not do the red-eye thingy and took some pics of my licence plate (during the day and during the night and different angles and distances) and volia! Just a bright white licence plate... I'd post some pics but i don't think i can yet...
I also hardwired in my Passport 8500 X50 today..... everything is coming together muuhahaha!
I can email some pictures of the VF2 in action if anyone is interested, but it looks just like the pics they have on their site.
Does anyone have the M20 Blinder?
WK446 08-29-2006, 03:18 PM refplusten:
The Blinder is less effective in areas where front license plates are not required, e.g., Alberta.
The front or rear plate is normally what is used by the laser operator to "target." In the absence of a front plate, the headlights/foglights/signal lights are used as aiming points.
The Blinder's transmitters would have be be mounted extremely close to the headlights to even be remotely effective due to the narrow beam of the laser.
BTW, I'm from St. Albert (originally) as well...
I wouldn't mind seeing some of your photos...

Here is a day shot and a night shot.
M Audio 06-10-2008, 12:48 PM refplusten,
in your night and daytime shots, what device produced the extreme glare as shown in your photos?
clean car BTW..
Cheers..
mmoshansky 06-11-2008, 01:39 AM Hairspray and Plastic Cover tricks... I watched an episode of Mythbusters and they tested just this. Their findings showed that the radar gun could still catch your plate even with those tricks... Maybe they have created newer stronger covers that do work? Just thought I would pass it on!
If you are going to speed with photo radar in the area, do it in pairs or more.
If the photo's show more than one vehicle in the frame, the photo is thrown out because there is no clear and accurate way of determining who was doing the speeding.

Good way to get a $5000 ticket and lose your licence for about 6 months
