Just curious if anyone has installed any type of bike rack to the back of an X5 and could make any recommendations what to do or avoid.

I bought the hitch mounted one from BMW that allows the bikes to swing out of the way. That thing is great!!! It holds up to four bikes and is nice quality. The swing action allows you full access to the rear of the truck/sav with no problems.

I also had the hitch installed and use a Thule bike rack. Its similar to OEM as it swings out to allow you to get into the hatch. Its a more expensive way to go, but I believe its a lot more stable than the trunk mounted racks. Plus, no worries of having paint scratched with the hitch rack; it sits far enough away from the X, so that as long as you tie the bike wheels down, they won't scratch anything.
