i go for the factory 19" 4.4 sport Y spoke rims. it give the X5 a muscular look w/out looking aftermarket.

I agree..especially since you don't get snow in LA.The dot pattern running boards also add a nice touch..

even the 20" found on the 4.6is look good. but if you want to retain the current ride quality, just stick with the 17s or upgrade to 18s the most. bigger tires would compromise fuel economy due to higher rolling resistance, increase aquaplaning due to the bigger contact patch, and increase roll due to stronger grip, and you have to be more careful on bumps as you increase the tendency to dent your wheels due to the lower aspect ratio. it does look good though if that is what you are after. and you getter better dry cornering grip.

here is my true 100% opinion.

When I see SUVs with huge wheels, I think, wow, someone has a really bad inferiority complex or is trying to be someone they aren't. If it is between gansta look or performance, always sway for performance. 20s work on the X5, they look fine. The 4.6is wheels are beautiful. But 22s, seems like you are trying too hard.

Winter is gone here (I think).I run 17" Michelin Pilot Alpin snow tires in the winter months on the standard !7" BMW wheel.Great performance in snow and a cushie ride, but it gives you that 3.0 look.Happy to have my 19" back on,(Michelin Diamaris) on the standard 2003 19" sport wheels.Harder, sportier ride, but I like it.Great cornering, wet and dry performance and it looks like a 4.4 again.

The service writer at my dealer has a client that just bought a 4.8is and he changed wheels and tires, he said the guy wants $2K for the OE 20" wheels and tires, I believe they have under 100 miles on them.
Let me know and Ill tell you the dealership and service writers name if you like.

I agree. 22s are overdone. Too hip-hop.

Are the wheels the v spoke style 168? If so I am real interested. Please forward that name and number.

I'd stay with 20" or under... 4.6is rims with the Diamaris tires bump up the handling and braking (and look great) but the ride suffers and running around on ultra-low profile tires is no fun on anything but glass-smooth roads. (the rear tire on a stock 4.6is is over $300 and hard to find, ask me how I know)

If you want cheaper performance, try some 4.4i sport 19" stock rims with the Diamaris tires -
