I'm happy to clear this up for you.

All car makers, BMW, VW, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, you name it, all work the same way. The car makers generally do NOT make anything themselves, as far as the parts that make up their cars go.

In fact neither does Motorola (where I used to work as an RF Engineer), Nokia, Samsung, or any of the cell phone makers and pretty much every major brand name assembler of anything in the world for that matter.

Virtually every part in each car has what are called 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and sometimes 4th source suppliers.

These "x" suppliers all manufacture a part, from the Brand / Assembler ' s point of view, in our case BMW, that meets their exact specifications for use and assembly into their cars.

The reasons for having multiple sources for the same exact part # are many, but mostly revolve around cost control, and risk mitigation for BMW.

BMW cannot afford, out of the thousands of parts that go into making a BMW, to hold up hundreds or thousands of cars, waiting on any single part in those cars for vitually any time at all, in order to complete them and get them out to their customers, the dealerships.

In fact, the big brands often will BILL a part manufacturer / supplier for their costs when an assembly line is held up at literally THOUSANDS of dollars a day, if an OEM supplier is holding up the Brand's assembly line. I learned this intersting fact of big business at my last engineering job with a semiconductor manufacturer called National Semiconductor while in their Management Rotation program.

So, how's it work?

BMW contact manufacturers of some type of part. In this case, lighting housings and plastic moldings.

They give the OEM suppliers specks, and request quotes from them as well as samples.

BMW gets the samples back, and test for tolerances, fitment, longevity testing, durablitiy, and harsh environmental testing as well as EOF (End of Life) tests on all the parts. Basically, they determine how long the part will last, and if it is up to BMW quality to qualify for final inclusion in their car's design.

If an OEM supplier qualifies their parts with BMW, and BMW and the OEM manufacturer agree on a price and terms, that OEM supplier qualifies as an OEM BMW supplier for THAT part. BMW selects 3 or 4 sources for each part, so that if one OEM manufacturer / supplier for that part has a fire, quality problems, goes out of business, raises their prices, etc. BMW does NOT have to stop assembly of thousands of cars... they just go down the list to the next supplier and order and keep the BMWs coming... In fact, in order to further mitigate their risk, BMW typically will have orders going with all of the suppliers at the same time so that there is less chance for product hold-ups of any kind. That's why many BMWs have the same looking part, but different branded OEM logos (ie. fog lights are an easy to check example of this).

On a part-wise basis, how does it work?

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. An OEM is one of the BMW approved suppliers for a particular part.

In our case, the OEMs for BMW tails for E36s are 3:

R & S
Magneti Marelli
and Bosch

They are ALL DOT approved and supplied in BMW boxes if you go to a dealership.

From the dealership, you will get the exact same part as from the manufacturer, or an aftermarket seller as you would from the BMW dealership, except for three things.

1. the part purchased from the dealership will be in a BMW box
2. the part purchased from the dealership will feature a BMW logo somewhere on it, in some cases, but not all.
3. the part purchased from the dealership will cost you more money

The OEMs cannot put a BMW logo on the part without getting sued as the BMW logo and Roundel are trademarks of BMW, unless they are selling it to BMW for their use directly (ie. use in cars, or re-distribution to their dealer network parts departments).

The OEMs sell to companies like ours and others, the exact same part as they sell to BMW, only without the BMW logo, and in an OEM box.

Bosch does the same, as well as Sachs, and everyone else.

If you buy a Sachs clutch, on no place will the BMW part number OR logo be displayed, yet thats OEM.

Same with the Hella fog lights for E36. There is no BMW logo or part number on them but would anyone dispute they are OEM?

How about ATE brake parts? Pagid brake pads, pudenz fuse, boge mounts, bilstien shocks, lemferder undercar parts, ZF steering parts, Behr radiators, FAG bearings, Conti belts, MANN filters, Elring Gaskets, Mahle Pistons the list can go on forever.

BMW Dealership = logo of car manufacturer fancy box, higher price

OEM = logo of the Original Equipment Manufacturer, OEM box, better price....

Sometimes BMW Dealerships call their parts "Genuine BMW". Those parts do not say OEM, and will come in a BMW box with a BMW logo on the part in some cases (not in others, like with radiators, where BMW actually scratches out the OEM manufacturer's logo).

KO carries both "Genuine BMW" and "OEM" or "Genuine OEM" parts and we are very careful to only work with and deal with OEM or Genuine suppliers. We purchase from OEM suppliers and also from BMW directly, depending on the part, and the pricing so as to always offer our customer the best products, and best quality, at the best prices.

If we say OEM it’s OEM because we have looked inside a Genuine box. We are probably the only supplier that does that, it’s expensive but keeps the trust with customers.

Regarding Magneti Marelli, they were origianlly only OEM for Euro E36s as they have the clear turn signals. US cars did not. You can go to Magneti Marelli's website and see that they are an OEM supplier for BMW. :)

In addition, if you need even more proof, please feel free to do the following test which we did ourselves this morning on a 318is with the orange turn signal stock tail lights just to find even more evidence for you so you had absolutely NO quesions left of any kind.

Take one of your taillights out to your car, and check every aspect of it against your amber turn signal stock light...

You will find that the light is EXACTLY the same in every way, shape and form, including the same "casting #" found in the clear turn signal section or the orange turn signal section beginning with the number "2", except that your new lights have clear turn signals, and your stock ligts have a small 5 mm high BMW logo on them in the red portion of the taillight just below the amber turn signal.

Check control is the system used on cars with OBC (On-Board Computers). I have only seen a couple cars without OBC in US spec trim. It’s very rare.

the pns for those without Check control (very rare to not have it in US cars) are:

these two part numbers are not at this pricing for the normal US tail lamp, as the volume is not high enough to sustain this gp pricing.

I checked with the my supplier and we do not know for sure.

If the connector is the same, it will probably work fine for you. Most likely check-control lights just have an extra pin and wire in the connector that allows them to talk to the ECU and the non-check control are probaly just missing this pin, however...

we don't know for sure.

Your best bet would be to find a buddy that has check control lights in your area, and see if they work when plugged into your socket.

The supplier we use for the check control lights does not carry the non-check control lights, and we would have get the non-check directly from BMW and unfortunatley, our magin is not as good, thus the non-check lights are more expensive.

FYI John Paul, the check control lights will (or should I say I'm 99.9% sure) work with the non-check control systems, no problem. I'm currently running non-check control clears on my car which has check control.

The only difference is that the non-check control connectors have 7 pins, while the check control ones have 8. So if you run a check control one on the non-check control cars, it'll just have a redundant pin. The connector should be identical. :)

We only carry Genuine BMW, or OEM BMW. There are no real OEM smoke lamps :(...

The prices in this GP are for OEM BMW (see earlier posting in this thread to find out the difference). We offer the Genuine BMW parts as well (will cost you more $ :( ), however it is the same part, just with / out the BMW logo.

We have the OEM BMW on our 97 M3 track car just featured in May's Bimmer Magazine.

I wanted to just confirm that what John Paul says is correct on these tail lights. I installed my euro clear tails tonight, and despite NOT having a bmw logo on the lights, they are EXACTLY identical to my original amber tails.
Every plastic mold and metal piece are the same. No tail light errors, no loose gaps, etc.

We post the part #s just like BMW does in their master guide which makes it a little confusing for US customers when it doesn’t really need to be.

Almost every USA car sold has check control. You can tell by if you have OBC (on board computer) or not. If you have an on board computer (again almost all USA cars have this) than you have check control.

The check control lights are for a normal US E36.

Hi Frank,

The package deals or parts themselves do not include the bulbs generally, as shipping isn't the greatest for those parts.

Some parts do, but in most cases no. You can pick the bulbs up from any local car store for extremely cheap.

We sell the stealth bulbs separately or in packages for you as well. If you don't see the package you wan't just email me with what you'd like different from the part #/ package that you see and we'll add it and email you back the link!

I'm not sure if you've heard of anyone else who has had a similar issue but my girlfriend ordered me a set of the clear tails for the 2 door e36 with check control since I have a US spec car with an 18 OBC I figured they would be right. However, the connectors on my car have one less pin per side than the new tails do (7 on LH and 6 on RH). When I brake my RH side reverse light comes on if I have the clear LH side tail in regardless of what tail is on the RH side. I've started this (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=657396). But i'm not sure if you knew of a quick fix or anyone else who has had a similar issue.

Hi Ricardo,

You have an E46 BMW, so you would need to get an LCM and maybe some other hardware to control HID lights for your car, but you can check out the headlight options for your year and model, with the link below.

You can figure out exactly what you could retro fit as far as the headlights go, into your car (less the other stuff of course) by obtaining your car’s production date located on the inside driver’s side door panel, in a monthmonth / YY format and comparing that to the applications: data for each headlight.

That’s the best way to start.

No real rush on this, I have the DEPO set on my car at the moment...they just have a little condensation issue when it rains, and unfortunately, it has been here. Minor annoyance.

OK… phew… we’ve been so busy this week because we just launched our VW campaign so it’s been a little crazy here lately.

ZKW is one of BMW’s OEMs for lighting products. They are the OEM for many of the European and USA vehicles fogs, and the euro glass lens headlights. We really like their products as we feel they are the best quality on the market for BMW E36s.

Genuine means BMW logo, BMW box/sticker, etc. and comes from the BMW network of dealers (direct corporate BMW sales channel). OEM means Original Equipment Manufacturer and is the mfg. plant where the car maker, ie. BMW, Porsche, etc. gets their individual parts manufactured. Usually for any given part there are about 3-4 OEMs because the car maker doesn’t want to hold up an entire production line if one part at a certain plant has issues, so they purchase from multiple plants at the same time. They are all perfect fitment if it’s OEM. Biggest difference is that it’s less expensive, and it doesn’t have the BMW logo on it (trademark).

We don’t carry DEPO because we ONLY carry OEM and Genuine products. We only carry the finest lines because of the exact type of problems you are experiencing.

Wow what a great service from john...I bought a set of clear lights for my buddy last week, he is going back to Argentina today, we got the them and one fo them was broken, sent it back and got another one next day from John, wich was missing a connector + had a few scratches on it so i called John on Thursday and told him that my friend was going back to Argetina this Saturday so today I got another tailight from john (overnight Saturday delivery) OEM with BMW logo...JOHN YOU ARE DA MAN
