My wife has a 2002 X5, 4.4. We have had the car for just under 2 years.

Ever since we have had the car, it consumes a lot of oil. It consumes so much oil, I've had it into the dealer at least 6 times for the same problem. We are probably 4 oil changes in, every change I have to add several quarts of oil between changes.

This last fill up. I have to add 4 courts of oil, 7K miles into the oil change, or 1/2 way through the regular scheduled interval. It is now asking me to check the oil level again.

We live in Atlanta, my wife is in real estate. She does drive a lot, 18K / year in city driving conditions. The car is NOT leaking onto parking spots or into the underbelly. The engine bay looks clean. The Stealership is telling me this is normal oil consumption.

It is getting old, this will be about the 7th time we have had it in for the SAME issue in a 2 year period.

I have a 540, brother in law has a 540, mother in law drives a 740. NONE OF these cars burn any oil. This X5 is going through it like mad, granted it is a heavy AWD car.

Do you all have any suggestions? Does this sound normal?

this is normal oil consumption, just the fact that you don't change your oil every 3k miles anymore doesn't mean you shouldn't be adding oil.

your burning a half a quart every thousand miles. that should be fine especially if she is driving city...also make sure they are filling up the oil to the proper level after you get the oil changed. this is just a common effect of synthetic oil and a HO motor. if you have them swap motors you may open a can of worms to worse problems. i would rather have a BMW installed motor that burns oil than a dealer installed motor. just my .02

what brand/grade of oil are you using? frequent short trips will lead to higher oil consumption.
