View Full Version : Most popular DD e39 aftermarket suspension?

I hear that stock shocks on the 540i need to be replaced every 60k or so. Is there a typical favorite suspension that maintains a smooth ride but maybe improves handling/drop slightly and lasts longer?

Thanks in advance.

OE Sport, H&R, or Eibach springs if you want a drop and handling improvement coupled with Koni Sport adjustables (set at most one turn from full soft) should last longer than you'll likely keep the car. When the wear a bit, the Koni's can be tweaked a bit stiffer to compensate for the wear. A lowered car won't be as gentle a ride as stock, but if not lowered excessively the ride will still be pretty civilized.

I'm rather partial to H&R's & Konis. The handling is great and the ride quality is very good over all but the roughest surfaces or speed bumps.

I'd also like pics of the drop that certain combinations provide. Not looking to slam the car, just eliminate a bit of fender gap. Appearance, however, is not my first priority. Just a curiosity.

Is there a height adjustable coilover with a ride quality that can be not much worse than stock sports suspension?

I've heard sketchy things about the ride quality of the bekkers.

The ride quality is good with these kits, I have driven a M3 with our coilover kit. The ride was still good, not too stiff but it was still a sportier ride than the stock sport suspension. I would be interested in what sketchy things you have heard, feedback is always good.
