The computer on my 97 M3 is telling me that the coolant level is low, and the brake and tail light circuits have problems. But the coolant level is ok, and the tail and brake lights work fine. Any ideas? Does my battery need replaced maybe?

The most common causes for the "Brake circuit failure" error are:

- Bad brake switch - do a search on "Brake Circuit" to find replacement instructions.
- Bad contacts in the taillight, either the bulb holders, the wiring connectors, or the traces themselves - clean all contacts, use a little dielectric grease to protect the connections, inspect circuit board traces for burned spots. Clean and repair if found.
- Brass-bottomed bulbs instead of the silver ones - replace with the silver-based bulbs from Osram or from the BMW dealer. For some reason, BMWs tend not to like the normal bulbs with the brass bases.
- Replacement taillights that don't support the "Check Control" feature correctly. If this is the case, you're stuck unless you can return the taillights for the correct ones.

Bogus coolant level errors are usually caused by the coolant level sensor. First check to make sure the connections are clean and uncorroded. If they're OK, then you probably have to replace the sensor.

I have the same problem. Where is my coolant level sensor Jim?

What car do you have? If it's an E36, look at the bottom of the coolant overflow tank.
