I've seen it as both. Maybe one of them is for the "M".

Yeah, as far as I know, the 1 series is E87... :confused

edit: I've just seen the ///M 1 series as E81 tho, so I don't know... Maybe the forum title should be updated to both codes ("1 series (E81, E87)")

The models go numbered according chronologically.

i just checked the BMW repair/spec site via my dealerships computer...and yes it is the E87. But a few magazines call it an E81, it's date of production started in 2004. You can see it in the back of the Total BMW mag. Same thing from what i can tell on specs.
Oh and the M1 is an E26 built from 1978-1981
