...at the tail end of the driveshaft on a 540? I've found out that BMW does not service the driveshaft they just install a new one. A reman unit is $550 shipped with a $60 core charge. I think I've narrowed my problem to the rear cv, hopefully.
Thanks,

U-joint, you mean? I don't think the driveshaft has a CV joint, unless BMWs are different than other RWD cars and need two axes of freedom for some reason.
Back in my RX-7 days the car was said to have "non servicable" u-joints. When I suspected mine was bad, I had it checked by a local driveline expert who said he would have no problem replacing my U-joints, but that they were actually OK. I'd suggest checking into that option.
My driveshaft consists of a flex disc (guibo) front shaft, u-joint (non-repairable), rear shaft and finally a rear CV that connects to the diff. I have movement around the shaft near the CV.
I can get the CV at the stealer special order. I was just wondering if NE1 has done their car. Are all BMWs the same? 3's, 5's and the 7's with non repairable d-shafts?
Talking about going to the stealer, I already have to get bolts for the exhaust I had to take off and a missing exhaust hanger.

Just take it to a driveline specialist. They'll be able to tell you right off whether it's repairable or not.
If you get a chance, take a picture of the CV joint.

I removed the rear half of the driveshaft today. Do you know of a local driveline shop in MD?

That's damned weird.
I don't know of any... let your fingers do the walking. :)
