What are the differences in models such as a 740 and 745?

Well, everyone knows that a 1998 740i is the best car you can possibly buy. Everyone who's cool owns one of those.

Everything is different. The 740 (E32-E38, 1994-2001) and the 745 (E65, 2002-2005) are completely different. The 745 was a complete remodel of the 7 series that happened in 2002. With that remodel you get new everything, a more powerful engine, the introduction of BMW's (crap) i-Drive system, more power features and the addition of four more OBCs that had many a problem. The 745 also received more electronic enhancements like adaptive bi-xenon headlights, adaptive cruise control, a new vehicle dynamic stability control system and upgraded 6-speed steptronic transmission with adaptive learning.

Hope you got the jist of the differences, there are many more. Overall dimensions are roughly the same, with a bit more headroom in the 745 if I am not mistaken. Some love the "new" body style which the 745 falls under, and some still love the older E38 740 style.

I love both. I-drive is not that big of a deal. It's actually quite nice. People are hesitant towards change.

I like the concept of i-Drive and I think BMW did a good job working out some of the usability issues in the later models 2004+ but the first two years were terrible IMO! I like simplicity, I only wish the displays were touch screen.
