View Full Version : Question about S2000 performance
UD///M 10-17-2002, 05:21 PM What is the time in a quarter mile for the s2000? I guy I work with says that he can do 10s quarters without a bottle or boost. All stock.
I say I'll believe it when I see it. Who is right?
Rel44 M3 10-17-2002, 05:33 PM Dave ran a 13.66 in the quarter, and that apparently was an exceptional number. Normally they'll be in the low 14's/high 13's like the M3.
JasonJ75 10-17-2002, 06:19 PM Guy I know at work said a stock V6 '66 Mustang could do the 1/4 in 9's.....:95
Some people just don't know shit.
injunfeller 10-17-2002, 08:56 PM are you sure he didnt mean 1/8 mile?

And from what I recall from Dave's post, he had to FLOG it to get it there.
From most of the reasonable posts I have seen, it's harder to get repeatable numbers from them simply because of the need to feather the clutch from 6k or so...
Rel44 M3 10-18-2002, 10:44 AM Yep, tach it up to 7k rpm, modulate the clutch... I doubt you can make too many runs like that before that clutch needs replacing. :)
r6e36 10-18-2002, 01:17 PM Yeah, no wonder every S2000 owner complains about their transmission having some sort of problem.

LOL! :bs: This is so funny. I dont think ford even made a V6 in 66. I6 yes. and Im sure it had 500hp.
youve got to have one heck of a driver to get an S2k to do mid 13s. Your average Joe S2k driver will do mid 14s
And break his rearend in teh process. I guess tha proves an S2k is religated to track duty :) doesnt do to bad there. The thing that suck about them is even with a blower and 340 hp they only gain a tenth:(
Rel44 M3 10-18-2002, 01:44 PM Okay, but the S2000 is definitely fun to drive. I'd use it more for track duty than as a daily driver though. No torque at low rpm's = no fun.
SilverStreak 10-21-2002, 11:34 AM Actually it was 7700 rpm launch for that 13.66, and if you guys recall even the S2000 faithful didn't believe I got those times....
10's... in the 1/8th mile, sure... ;)

Oh SORRY so I was off by 700 rpm. J/k.
SilverStreak 10-21-2002, 12:27 PM I was teasing too, but my point was it took nearly a 8000 rpm launch to get that thing into the 13's that day... otherwise it was all 14's all day...

A friend of mine blew out his engine after only 7000 miles but then again he did race at every damn stoplight.
Rel44 M3 10-21-2002, 01:09 PM Damn. I would've figured the tranny would go before the engine because it is a Honda high-revving engine. They're supposed to be designed to handle that...
SSilver 10-21-2002, 02:26 PM I was a tech at a honda dealership for a shorttime and we had tons of S2000's in there. I know for a fact they are dogs below 6k RPM's. One of them came in for a blown motor, the owner threw a 75 shot of N20 on there and shot a rod through the block. The motor is too high compression to put on any sort of power adder without doing a new bottom end.
They were notorious for tranny and clutch problems although I don't recall any that had problems with the rearend. Seems the tranny and clutch were the weak link.
M3Buff 10-22-2002, 01:39 AM One of my friends has an S2000 and he had to have the clutch replaced after around 18K miles. Funny thing was that he had never subjected the clutch to any abuse. He drives the car hard no question about it, but doesn't do any of those spectacular 7K launches. His theory was that it was being taken for joyrides and dragraced by some of the guys that worked at the shady dealership that he used to take the car to. Atleast, Honda replaced the clutch under warranty.
I've driven the car a couple of times and absolutely loved the little monster. I mean, it's got a classic Jekyl and Hyde personality. Limps around like a Civic till you hit that marvelous VTEC zone (around 6.5K) and then the kick that you experience is nothing short of incredible. And at those 8 - 9K rpms, it positively howls - feels scary at first like something's going to blow up, but knowing that that's how the engine was meant to be run... And the handling - wow, it feels absolutely glued down and the steering is razor sharp. No body roll whatsoever. Very good brakes too. I didn't feel like pushing it too much through the curves as it didn't give me the same confidence that the M3 does; this was compounded by the fact that the guy that owns the car said that he has lost it a few times through the turns and another friend (who drives a 300ZX TT and is a very good driver) also got the S2K into a spin earlier on the same day. No doubt the S2000 handles very, very well, but definitely needs some getting used to. That said, I'd love to have one(in addition to the M3 of course).
Even the S2k guys are leery of the snap oversteer. They are good track cars. But noway in hell do I want to put a 35k car into a wall, thats a pricey track car. I would think there are millions of cheaper more mod friendly cars that you can use the extra $$ to get to a good driving school.
