I'll be studying in Lyon next year and I'd like to buy a small cheap car (ie old Mini or GTi) for road trips. I know it's not necessary, the trains are great, etc etc, but I much prefer to drive. Does anyone have a clue as to what the registration procedures are for an American living abroad? I know it's a long shot but I figured I might as well ask.

I was just in France 10 days ago ;0
you need to obtaina driver's license in France (For Americans)

Your American license is exchangeable for a French license if it is from one of the following states: Connecticut, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Kentucky (Please note this list can change at any time!). If you think I missed a state, then call your local Préfecture or sous Préfecture or French embassy/consulate. They will tell you if your license is exchangeable. If you do have a license from one of the states listed, you have one year from the date you entered France: the date stamped on your passport or Carte de Séjour, to make the exchange. If you wait more than a year, all is lost; you will have to obtain a French driving license 'from scratch', a difficult process.

registration should be ok

Purchase a car that blends in well with local passenger car environment. Remember, keep a low profile!

Safety and Security Precautions
Consider installation of burglar alarm on car consistent with risk level.
Make sure gas cap, spare tire, and engine compartment are lockable in the interest of good safety and security. Always have the fuel tank at least half full.
Keep vehicle locked at all times. (no brainer..except in Switzerland for me anyways)
Never park your vehicle on the street for long periods of time. try to have both right and left side rear view mirrors.
Do not leave registration papers in your car.

Do not use stickers or personalized license plates.

Thanks a lot. And I'll probably be going for an old clunker of a Mini 1300, so no need to worry about being too flashy:)
