Always a great way to start the week. It never gets old. From a 3-lap DVD that BMW put out in Europe. Boris Said does a lap too. You can tell Boris lifts in a few spots where Hans is flat everywhere.

At oktoberfest this past year, everyone who attended the last night at the hotel was fortunate to hear Boris go through the video turn by turn as he stood next to it playing on a plasma tv. It was quite an experience...and so was hearing him talk for a couple hours at the banquet later that evening. :)

If anyone wanted a real DVD of this recording, I sourced an original DVD from Europe and converted it to play in US Spec DVD players. It is awesome on a real DVD on a real TV. The little on-line version does not really do it justice.

In fact, i also have a second Sister DVD to this one that BMW put out. More laps of the 'ring in the E46 M3 GTR (the coolest ones are a dusk with light a blaze), but also some in-car laps of Spa-Franchorchamps by Jorg and Dirk Muller (both daytime laps and night laps).

Also, a 3rd DVD I sourced, highligths of the 2005 Nurburgring 24-hour race, which the E46 M3 won. Besides the race (about 60 minutes of highlights), they have another in-car qualifying lap in the E46 where the driver (Duncan Huisman I think) passes about 50 cars in the lap. Also a really interesting helicopter view as the helicopter films the E46 M3 and a Viper go nose to tail for a whole lap of the 'ring.

Great stuff.

E-mail me off line if interested. $10 per DVD. I can take paypal. :alright

cheers,

I have both of the M3 GTR DVD's also. BMW Motorsport sent me one, and said they planned on making them available here in the U.S., but never did. Too bad, because they're incredible.

The next best thing can be found at http://www.renn.tv/shop/

They had the 2004 BMW DVD for sale when it first came out, but I think it sold out in like two days. The Alzen DVD is worth buying, if you don't mind watching it on your PC.

www.renn.tv works great, I bought the original GTR video from them and then the 2004 version that they released for last year's race. The 2004 version is what you want it has the Stuck/Said/Lamy laps of the Nordschleife, plus Jorg and Dirk Muller at Spa. Renn.tv is easy to buy from they accept PayPal and ship very quickly. The videos are in PAL so you can't watch them on your TV. You'll need to have a DVD in your computer and watch them there.

I guess I was lucky to get them. Particularly the last one.

The 24-Hours Race 2005 is also good. It has an in car with Pedro Lamy in the GTR, but it's in the rain in lots of traffic, so it's about a 10 min lap. As you said the Alzen Onboard is also good. It's amazing car with all that horsepower.

You can find copies of the original PAL format of the in-baord laps on German Ebay from time to time. The last one I saw went for about $50.

A friend of mine with some decent video editing software was able to massage these and convert them to NTSC format to work on US Spec DVD players. We play them at BMW Club video nights. Way fun.

Noob question: Is that the GTR with the V8 that was banned?

Lance Racing
04-04-2006, 01:35 PM
Noob answer: Yes, this was the car that ran in ALMS, but was banned. Retrofitted with bigger fuel tanks and some other items to go endurance racing.

Does imply that running the nordschleife @ night is no big deal? or just a belaboring of the obvious

Belaboring of the obvious :)

Watching these DVDs, they never get a clean lap, and Stuck's lap has only about half the traffic of the actual race where all 220 race cars are on the track. Another one of the DVDs has a lap at dusk (headlights are on) and the M3 (I think Duncan Huisman is the driver) passes about 50 cars that lap. The fast cars come up on the slow cars so fast, I don't see how the corner stations can get the blue flags out safely. There are something like 22 different classes in the race. There are some pretty slow 4-cyl cars. Also a class for alternative fuels. I think they are called moving chicanes. :-)

I wonder if, assuming a clear lap, a driver like Stuck would see a drop in lap times at night. I suspect he could put up almost the same times, and in fact would be aided by cooler weather. The laps by Duncan at dusk were noted as being qualifying laps. The visibility is not that great, but I wonder if they decided that the cooler air helped with more power. The track was certainly not clear, because he had to pass a lot of cars. Of course, qualifying position for a 24-hour race is not that big of a deal anyway.

So where is the moral dividing line when it becomes "ok" to steal from someone or something? The fact that you own a BMW might be the dividing line for some who are much less fortunate? Sory, that's just a pet peeve of mine...

The new diesel Audi could EASILY be converted to run on alternative fuel. It seems fast enough. Done correctly (i.e. with a decent budget), a diesel sedan with alternative fuels could be just as fast as the M3 GTR and probably get better fuel mileage.

OK, well, I anticipate racing there at some point, and I guess that I was thinking out-loud about the closing speeds. I suppose that I should watch more real racing videos before making self-evident gaffs like that again.

Np. But when some people on the top of this thread make start to make money off of the DVDs? I guess thats ok.:confused

I would 100% buy them if they could be found in stores or made availble on the net. I will probably buy them from Lance since he seems to be the only source for the DVDs.:(

We all have our pet peeves. I personaly don't download free music. I pay for it.

My peeve with BMW is they put these incredible DVDs out in Europe in limited numbers, but never brought them over here. The original 3-laps of the ring with Stuck, Said and Huisman, they only made 999 copies. The second DVD where they do laps of the 'ring and Spa, they GAVE away to VIPs at the 2005 24 hour race.

If I wanted to make money on these, I'd put them on Ebay and sell them for $30 each and sell them all day long. I saw an original PAL format disc on German Ebay that went for about $50. I do give them away free to my local BMW friends here in Seattle. But I can't say "free" here or I'd get 1,000 requests. So $10 per disc seems like a good number to weed out the people that really want the discs. Consider the disc "free" but the $10 covers shipping and handling on each disc. :)

For those that are ordering, once you get them, feel free to burn them for your friends. I've also donated copies of all 3 of the discs to the BMW CCA national office to their video library. Any BMW CCA club member can check them out from that library for viewing. Contact Mike Mitchell at the national office if you want to go that route.

Now some of you will remember that BMW DID give away The Hire DVD to anyone with a pulse, including a copy in each Roundel. They should have been giving away these to the membership, they would sell more M3s as a result! :alright

Bryan, I agree, alt fuels could/will be a force at future races. For whatever reason, the class only seems to have little econobox cars running in it. Of course BMW won outright with an E36 diesel. Was that 1998?

cheers,

Lance Richert

Maybe Seneca knows for sure, but I think these DVD's were given to VIP's at the last two 24 hour races at the Nurburgring. They both say on the back that they are licensed for renn.tv. It's probably part of the compensation for renn.tv to be allowed to sell them after the race until they are gone. Here's a couple of pictures from the Nurburgring website showing Hans Stuck and Boris autographing the DVD's last year.

Here are paragraph descriptions of all 3 DVDs for anyone else that is considering picking them up.

DVD #22
2004 E46 M3 GTR in-car laps of the Nurburgring Nordschleife
50 minutes

This is a special DVD only released by BMW in Europe. They only printed
1,000 copies. Why they are not distributing it over here in the USA, I can't
image. This DVD is 3 in-car laps of the Nurburgring. One lap each by Hans
Stuck, Boris Said and Duncan Huisman during some sort of test session prior
to this year's 24-Hour race. Odd in part because there is no narration. Just
three single laps of the Nordschleife by the drivers, with the wail of the
engine as the soundtrack, this DVD rocks. The main screen shows out the
front of the car, then at the same time they inset a shot from the A-pillar
of the driver doing his thing, like "picture in picture". These guys are
smooooth.

One word... Amazing! If you are ever down, blue, bummed out, just put this
in and you'll be happy again in less than 3 laps. I've seen some great laps
of the 'ring, but this is the best yet.

DVD #24
2004 BMW M3 GTR In-Board - Nurburgring and Spa-Francorchamps
78 Minutes - No Narration

This is an encore DVD to DVD #22. BMW did the same format on this DVD, but
this time included laps of the Nurburgring and of Spa-Francorchamps. This
DVD was originally passed out to VIPs at the 2005 24-Hour Nurburgring race.
This DVD has more content than the first one (#22) they did. It starts off
with Stuck doing a lap of the 'ring, then Pedro Lamy doing 2 laps of
qualifying at dusk. The hillsides are packed with spectators and the laps
are quite spectacular. Then they go to Spa-Francorchamps. First Jorg Muller
goes out in daylight and pounds out 6 laps, and they do the
picture-in-picture again showing him driving. Then Dirk Muller goes out at
night (!!!) for Qualifying doing 5 laps. Finally, on this DVD you can watch
Stuck do the same Nurburgring lap, but with him explaining the whole lap.
Sadly he speaks in German, it would be fascinating to understand what he
says as he narrates the lap.

DVD #25
2005 Nurburgring 24-Hour Race
75 Minutes - English Narration

2005 24-Hour Nurburgring race, which the Schnitzer E46 M3 GTRs go 1-2,
though they had to earn it. They do an interesting helicopter perspective of
a lap of the ring. They put a camera in a helicopter and follow a red Dodge
Viper and one of the Schnitzer M3s as they dice with each for a full lap.
This looks to be during a practice session. The Viper is fast, and finished
3rd in the race. There is a timed in-car lap with Pedro Lamy in the E46 M3
GTR, during qualifying. What is great about this lap is they show a map of
the track, and with a little dot, track the car's progress as he drives. The
track is very full during this lap and he passes 45 cars on the lap.

A lot of video on the web is being played through home brewed Flash applications. These applications stream .flv files.

.flv = Flash Video

It's more and more common now. You will see less .wmv .avi .ram and .mov files and more of these Flash players. The Flash players are "smarter" than simple Windows Media/Real/Quicktime players and can have all sorts of custom looks and so forth.

This one loaded an .xml file with the file location in it. I had to crack the Flash player, find the .xml file and that gave me the location to the .flv file.

I was watching my DVD of this recording where Hans is over-dubbed commenting on the lap in German. One of my buddies who is fluent in German said that Hans says that at the Carousel turn they go to first gear. Also Hans said at a certain point of the lap "this area seperate the boys from the girls". LOL

When he gets stuck behind that red Porsche 935 he says "now I get a little breather before going maximum speed again". He also says "the Porsche does not have a chance against the power of the BMW engine".

They show more of the cool off lap, including him drive back to his pit box. The mechanics are all hugging Hans after the lap, it was the lap that put the car on pole for the race.

People upload Full Movie DVD's that are about 2-3 hours each and have over 20 chapters, and it's very easy to burn them onto a DVD disk. Anyways, I'll keep looking, if i'm not successful, I guess I'll have to hand over my money to you. :( :shifty
