View Full Version : Broadband (and other questions later) in the Marietta/Smyrna area?

Well, I've been down here almost a month, and I'm closing on a house on the 18th, so I'm looking around for broadband service (as well as everything else that goes along with a house, so I'm sure I'll have other questions). Just wanted to see what providers people are using and what they think. I'd prefer DSL over cable, too. I've heard good things about Atlantic Nexus, but 1.5/256 is a bit low for $33/month. I wish Verizon had their DSL down here. any recommendations?

The house I'm buying is on Harrow Court (off of Hurt Rd SW); I remember seeing a modded black E39 a few houses down when we looked at the house, too.

why do you prefer dsl? i've had better cable performance in atl then dslCable is shared bandwidth, dsl is dedicated. I've also never seen a dsl provider put a cap on your monthly download, but I've seen some cable providers do it (like comcast, I think they limit you to just a few gigs a month). But, sure, I'd take good cable over crappy dsl.

I have comcast 8meg for 19.99/month for the first 6 months, then 42.95 there after. I got the 6meg price because the stupid canadian call center shut off my service instead of enabling it.

No they don't. The poor sap I leech off of has comcast and I've grabbed like 5 gigs just this weekend.

Did someone say road biking?

:shiftyHeck yeh. You ride, too? Did you by chance do the ride from Roswell to downtown on 3/7? It was a blast. :)

Also looking to rock climb somewhere, too (I think you made a thread on that)... not very good at it, but it's fun.

Great, just great. Encourage him, why don't you? :rolleyes Don't worry, we'll keep the offroad drops to under 6 feet, and road speeds to less than 60. Fair? :D

I use speedfactory. They are located in Marietta and are way more reliable than Bellsouth. I pay $49.95 for 3M x 384K or they have the standard $32.95 1.5M x 256k. Where is Hurt Rd? What part of Marietta?

I have not started biking yet this year...I am really just getting back into it...I was off the bike for a long time because of a car accident I had two years ago. But I am trying...

Indoor or outdoor?

Have to add in the cost for local service, but so far my list has:
Atlantic Nexus DSL: 1.5mb x 256kb @ $32.99, 3.5mb x 384kb @ $42.99
Free modem, 6 month contract, month-to-month after that
BellSouth DSL: 1.5mb x 256kb @ $32.95, 3.0mb x 384kb @ $37.95
$75 mail-in rebate for the modem with 12 month commitment, $50 visa gift card with the 3.0MB service
SpeedFactory DSL: 1.5mb x 256kb @ $32.95, 3.0mb x 384kb @ $49.95
$75 mail-in rebate for the modem with 12 month commitment
ComCast cable: 6mb x 384kb @ $42.95
$32.95/mth the first 6 months, standard cable is $16/mth, extended cable is $50/mth

1.5 service is the same across the first three, so it doesn't matter there.. not sure if I'll bump it up to the 3Mb service.

I have not started biking yet this year...I am really just getting back into it...I was off the bike for a long time because of a car accident I had two years ago. But I am trying...You'll have to come join Brian and I for a ride sometime then.

Indoor or outdoor?Indoor is what I did when I lived in PA, but I only went a handful of times.

I'd go for Speedfactory. Bellsouth sucks. They dropped a lot when I had them and had a lot of other issues with them. I had only one problem with Speedfactory in 4 yrs. Never heard of Atlantic Nexus.

speedfactory has great cust service/ tech the guys there are cool
however,
my vote is for cable,
and comcast does not shut you off after xxx gigs. i download anywhere from 1-20 gigs a night from newsgroups alone not counting my other daily net stuff.
also, at my house in hapeville, less than 10 people in a square mile have cable net. i hit well over 10 constantly
my house in decatur i hit 8-9 with ease.
:)
comcast ftw. only bad thing about comcast is the price.

if only we had FIOS

it's funny how people say others are more "reliable"

they're all CLEC's which means they all resell bellsouth's stuff.

and I easily pull 10mbps constant on my comcast out in canton. On the 8mbps but can burst to 10 all day long.

QoS rocks!

Going to call the utility companies over my lunch beak today to get things hooked up there.

Apparently I get my choice in gas provider. The current owner has SCANA. Any recommendations for provider and plan from anyone? I figure they all bend you over their pipeline and have their way with you, so it probably doesn't matter much.

Just looking through the gas provider websites...

Infinite:
Variable ($1.108/therm, $ 5.95 fee/month)
Fixed ($1.359/therm, $ 5.95 fee/month)

Georgia Natural Gas:
Variable ($1.139/therm, $ 5.95 fee/month)
Fixed 6 month ($1.099/therm, $ 6.99 fee/month)
Fixed 12 month ($1.299/therm, $ 7.99 fee/month)

SCANA:
Variable ($1.139/therm, $ 5.75 fee/month)
Fixed 6 month ($1.019/therm, $ 5.75 fee/month)
Fixed 12 month ($1.119/therm, $ 5.75 fee/month)

Looks like the differences are pretty negligible in the end. Is fixed or variable the way to go?

I have always gone with variable....I guess it depends on your budget flexibility.
