after a routine saturday afternoon drive, everything felt right and a block from home the car just became very hard to turn to either side...
at about a quarter turn to the right and half turn to the left it kinda gets stuck and then lets go,still pretty stiff though...
there are no leaks, the fluid is clear and very close to the top of reservoir after depressing the brake pedal 15 to 20 times...
any related info would be appreciated...

To follow along with the Roadfly thread:

Check the tensioner on the right side as you are facing the engine. If it seems ok then the belt may have "stretched" to the limit of the tensioner.

My 740 had that happen. Tensioner was at its limit and the belt was still a bit loose.

Draw a picture of threading as you see it from where you are standing and include tensioner orientation. I always drive myself nuts doing anything with these new fangled belts.

I use http://www.autohausaz.com/html/autohaus.html for most parts. If you need to buy a belt locally then just use them for a belt number cross reference.

it seems ok,the belt does give about half inch if pressed,is that normal or should it be stiffer?...I'm also getting a little clinking noise from engine...
somehow I have this gut feeling it's somethig else....

If you go start it now does it have power steering again?

If it does it may be the filter in the bottom of the resevoir.

it seems I didn't completely lost P/S...when I turn it to the right, I have to force steering wheel past a quarter turn (kinda gets stuck) and half turn...
to the left it sticks at half turn ...
same thing on return on same spots...what's the better way tr drain the system or get at the filter, sounded messy on some posts...
I'm also waiting for another jack to get the front high enough to look under for damage....

Try it when you get it off the ground. Both running and not running.

It would sound more like the steering column or steering box if it does the same running and not running.

got it off the ground, everything looks good (for what I can see)...
on the other hand when I turn the steering wheel,it feels like there's something rubbing at the other end (bottom of steering column) in those spots I mentioned above...
the car running or just with the key in ignition makes no difference....

more like some resistance at at the bottom to get past those spots....

There is a slip ring at the top of the steering column behind the wheel.
There also may be a clock spring mechanism for the air bag connection in there. If it breaks I believe that it is a warranty replacement at the dealer.

There is a rubber u joint farther down the column. Still under the dash.

There is another connection just before the steering box in the engine compartment.

The batteries need to be disconnected before disconnecting the airbag connector behind the wheel or the SRS will need to be reset. That is usually a trip to the dealer for the reset.

this resistance is coming from lower right hand side of engine,at the end of steering column, spent the last hour under the car but can't see anything damaged and then again I'm still a bit BMW illiterate which makes it harder to recognize the problem(s)...I'll get the mechanic to look at it tomorrow,I hope
is it drivable enough to get to mechanic or I should get a flat bed tow to avoid further damage....

once again THANKS Terry for your input,at least I'll have some idea of what the mechanic will tell me...

Might not be getting power to the pump, through the belt. I had the A/C on my car (850) stop working. The tensioner on the bottom of the engine had eaten its bearing, and the belt was slipping. New tensioner fixed it. Pull the tensioner pulley back and forth, or try to rock it back and forth, to be sure the problem isn't a worn idler bearing.

as I drove it to the mechanic today, I didn't notice any resistance at higher speeds...only at less than 20km...
servo relay was the main possibility but couldn't find it anywhere or near the left footrest...does the 94 840 have one??and where (fuse box)??

in conclusion,it was one worn down engine mount, allowed the engine to seat/rest on the steering component and caused the resistance when steering...

$300 for both from dealer and my baby is rolling again...
thank you all for your input and check them mounts.....
