And the final installment in the "Emma Racing Series"...
Last weekend, I ran an automatic Z28. Going in, I must admit that figured that I might be able to take him, but even if not, that I'd give him everything that he wanted.
Well, we lined up and ran from the same 20-roll as previously described. And we're off...
I hop out by about 1/2 car in first, as I expected, considering his car is an auto. I shift into second about the same time as I see his car change gears out of the corner of my eye as I look over slightly. As soon as we hit second, he starts coming up on me pretty quick. I wasn't expecting this, but I'm just waiting for third gear to hit and I figure I'll even things back out. As I shift into third, I'm about 1/2 car behind him.
I hit third and... whaaaaaa? He just starts walking away from me. Noooo... I don't understand. I hit fourth and I'm thinking, "Just wait until fifth... I'll start to reel you back in up top like I did the Trans Am." He, by this time, is out to about 3 cars on me. I shift into fifth and he stop pulling on me quite so much. I'm all the way in it, but not gaining on him. Huh? What is going on?
Well, we come up on traffic and he hits his brakes. I don't know how fast we were going by then, but I imagine it was around 140 or so. And I wasn't gaining on him at all.
As it turns out, his car is NOT stock (now they tell me...) -- he has a CAI and an "air foil" (dunno what that is), exhaust, crank pullies, gutted cats and a few other small mods. Hmmm... wish I'd known that previously. Oh, well. It was fun and I don't mind losing to a superior car. Just gives me something to aim at. :D
BTW, in the process of this race, I lost my clear corner, which I'd JUST installed that week. I knew about that problem, but didn't zip-tie them down. Needless to say, I got the replacement this week and zip-tied those b****es down ASAP. Be careful if you have the clears... even the OEM's will fly out.
