View Full Version : Emma vs. My Brother's Modded 95 GS-R
Ron17 10-17-2002, 09:33 AM On the same night as the Trans Am race, my middle brother wanted to run me to see what happens. He drives a 95 GS-R with: CAI w/ Icebox (think heat shield, but even more insulated), headers, exhaust, pulleys. This car is every bit the equivalent of a Type-R. He knows that he's going to lose, but he still wanted to run just to see what happened.
So, we go out, line up and run.
Let me start by saying that a modded GS-R (or a Type-R) in VTEC pulls HARD. We had a good, clean start that was even and I was driving well, but I didn't pull on him until late.
Through first, I'm maybe one foot in front of him. I shift into second and stay about 1/4 car in front of him. Of course, he's winding out every bit of those 8500 RPM's available to him and he's just staying right with me. Dang!! I can't shake him.
I try to get every bit out of my gears that I can and... ooops... bounced off the rev limiter right when I'm starting to pull on him. I shift into third gear, having given back the 1/2 car lead that I'd built. Damn.
However, as soon as I get in the powerband in third gear, I just start walking on him... and fast. By the end of third, I have a car on him. By the end of fourth, it's up to 2 cars. And, by the time he slowed in fifth, I was about 2.5 cars on him.
Well, we decided to race again, and the result was basically the same. This time, I didn't bounce off the rev limiter, so it added about a half-car or so. We'll call it 2.5 - 3 cars. I just could not shake him thru first or second.
So, for any of you that think you are just going to waste a modded GS-R or a Type-R in your stock M3, let this be a warning -- they are no joke.
jake1sir 10-18-2002, 09:11 PM I am sorry but you need to learn how to drive your car. The torque curve in your M3 is monstorous compared to his, dispite how much hps he has. And when it comes to launching, rear wheel drive vs. front, forget about it, not even considering your low range torque. I might believe your story if it was from a rolling start, but c'mon look at the stats.
Ron17 10-21-2002, 12:34 AM Please forgive me... this was, as all the other races I detailed in this forum, from a 20-roll. His car was sitting just below VTEC when we went. Let me reiterate... this was NOT from a stop.
VOLSBimmer 10-21-2002, 01:02 AM A modded GSR like your brother's should really be no match for a stock Type R though, the Type R's can run 14.5s stock, and the GSRs run like 15.5's stock at best, then w/ those mods I would expect it to be in the low 15s, but still not able to touch a Type R.
I raced a Type R last year in my 328is w/ mods that are in my sig, and the Type R had lighter wheels than stock and a carbon fiber hood (maybe other stuff, but that's all that I could see). We went from a roll to about the end of 3rd, and I pulled just a little on it, not quite 1/2 a car.

His GS-R ran a 14.7 in the quarter and it's probably a touch faster than that now (we'll find out soon, as we'll be going to the track next month). Type-R's do not pull on him until late in the game. Up to 110, he says the stock Type-R's he's raced do not pull on him by anymore than 1/2 car, if that... from a roll, that is.
SilverStreak 10-21-2002, 12:25 PM Racing from a roll ain't drag racing and proves absolutely nothing about driver skill, it's a useless gauge with which to measure anything, too many factors, gearing, etc...

 I never called it drag racing.
It is what it is... and it's fun.
We'll be going to the track in a month or so and I'll post times from all the cars mentioned then. Perhaps that will satisfy the "drag-strip purists"? :dunno
SilverStreak 10-21-2002, 02:33 PM Racing from a roll proves nothing and involves no skill, so why bother?

Watching TV proves nothing and involves no skill, so why bother? Playing the card game, WAR, proves nothing and involves no skill, so why bother? Neither does listening to music, going for a Sunday drive, laying out in the sun, or any number of pasttimes...
We do it for fun. I don't profess to be Richard Petty because I beat a modded GS-R. I just raced him from a roll and reported the results for those who care to know.
SilverStreak 10-21-2002, 02:57 PM That's fine, I just wouldn't use it as a gauge to measure anything by, about your car, or someone elses, etc....
Ron17 10-21-2002, 03:25 PM Yeah, that's cool. We are all anxious to get out on the 1/4-mile track and see what kinda times we can put down. Unfortunately, it's kinda far from home, so it's not easy to get down there often. We only have a 1/8-mile track in (the town where my family lives) and it's WAY overpriced and not a good quality of track.
After we get those slips, THEN we'll start making assumptions. :)
SilverStreak 10-21-2002, 03:35 PM The track is a lot of fun, and takes lots of practice, all of which make you a better racer. You track the car a few times a year (which is safer than street racing anyway) and you'll see a dramatic improvement in your skills, off the track.
Ron17 10-21-2002, 03:39 PM Yeah, that's why I figure I might take in one or two outings to the 1/8-mile track just to get a feel for my car and how to optimize my launch. I don't wanna go up to the 1/4-mile scene and embarass myself with a 15.5 or something... BOOOOOO!!!!
SilverStreak 10-21-2002, 03:44 PM Don't worry about embarassing yourself, just go and practice, and do your best. Go on a Test n Tune night and just work on your launch/your 60' time. You get consistent with your 60' times, and the rest is gravy....
