View Full Version : Killed a stock e36 M3 the other night
QuestMCoupe 10-16-2002, 09:11 PM I was cruising along on my way home Saturday night and came across a stock looking e36 M3. As I caught up the guy/girl started going faster to try to get away from me or something so I scooted over into the next lane and matched speeds with them. At about 80 in fourth gear we floor and I quickly pull about 3 or 4 car lengths on them by the time I shut it down at about 110. Afterwards the M3 did a fly by and kept going. About 10 minutes later I came up to a black e36 M3, stock looking also, but he didnt want to race. Hey Scho, if you're reading this...we need a rematch.
SilverSS 10-16-2002, 10:02 PM Man, you must have a crazy car to beat the E36 M, you mind listing your mods? I am looking into a 330 soon.
QuestMCoupe 10-16-2002, 10:38 PM Thanks. I've got a 3.0L M3 motor, AA Euro HFM, AA CAI, AA custom chip, 24lbs injectors, ES Tuning exhaust, URI UDPs.
SilverSS 10-16-2002, 10:40 PM LOL aight, as soon as I read you had the M motor, I just stopped reading :biglaughb
I was considering dropping an M in a 330, well have to see how much my bank account is willing to flex when the time comes.
QuestMCoupe 10-16-2002, 10:42 PM Dropping a M engine into an e46 may cost some money especially after buying an e46. BTW, what did you think I had in my car?
SilverSS 10-16-2002, 10:44 PM I dunno, I thought maybe you slapped some kinds fukin blower on there, and it was a falsely badged M3, I dunno, I did not really think nething! And I would drop the M into an E36.
QuestMCoupe 10-16-2002, 11:02 PM Oh I see. I wish I had a blower to slap on my car...lol. I thought you meant you were thinking of getting a e46 330 and putting a M3 engine in there...sorry about that.
SilverSS 10-17-2002, 07:33 AM If I was gonna do that, I would probaly just send up getting a lilttle older M3. My friends dad is selling a 1997 328is, I need to go check it out, but my friend told me his dad really took care of it. He wants round 16K and it has 40Kmiles, so I will try and see it this weekend.

You sure that M3 wasn't in 5th gear when you floored it? Anyway, good kill.
QuestMCoupe 10-19-2002, 08:44 PM Well I let the M3 take off first so if they were in 5th then they didnt know what they were doing.
Stylin 10-19-2002, 08:52 PM wow.. sure it was a real M3 and not a M kitted 32x?
QuestMCoupe 10-19-2002, 09:05 PM I'm sure it was a real M3. It had the full kit, wheels, etc. I saw the moldings and everything. Maybe it was an auto?
Stylin 10-19-2002, 11:35 PM most likely.. good kill!

Not disputing your win, Joe. I just happen to want to leave it in 5th even during spirited driving on the highway, just because I'm too lazy to downshift. :) It could be the M3 was just driving fast and didn't really intend to try and race you. Either way, a win is a win.
QuestMCoupe 10-20-2002, 02:53 AM Yeah that could be possible. I guess after looking at the race again, it wasnt really a good one. I'll find another one who really wants to race and post the results.
SilverStreak 10-21-2002, 11:47 AM Nice kill, Joe! :alright
QuestMCoupe 10-21-2002, 07:46 PM Thanks Dave.
psk145 10-21-2002, 07:48 PM good kill man. Too bad you didnt have your old rims. Imagine the look on their faces as you pull away!!! :)
QuestMCoupe 10-21-2002, 08:21 PM Thanks Chuck. I've noticed my car being a little slower nonw with the 18s.
aceves 10-21-2002, 10:49 PM Why is everyone so surprised ? doesn't he have an M engine ?
SilverStreak 10-21-2002, 11:33 PM Yeah, Joe has the M engine, and the benefit of lighter weight than the comparable M car, his car is no joke! :buttrock
QuestMCoupe 10-21-2002, 11:43 PM Thanks Dave.
aceves, I dont know, maybe stock M3's should be quicker but I do have some good mods over a stock M3. I'm thinking of getting some LTW wheels though so I wont be a bit slower than I should be.
SilverStreak 10-21-2002, 11:49 PM Power to weight ratio is your advantage, Joe, and it means everything in a race...
psk145 10-22-2002, 12:00 AM why would his car have a weight advantage over M3's?
SilverStreak 10-22-2002, 12:11 AM Unless we're talking about the Lightweight M3, the M always weighs more than the car on which it's based, in this case, the 3 comparable 3 series model... Plus Joe's got some mods on that M motor too... it ain't stock...
psk145 10-22-2002, 12:52 AM I still dont see why an M3 would be significantly heavier than its 3 counterpart though.
SilverStreak 10-22-2002, 01:03 AM Go look up some curbweights.... The 01 M Roadster has over 200 lbs on my Z3 3.0, as an example....
Rel44 M3 10-22-2002, 03:06 PM Actually, I had wanted to know how much lighter Joe's car was than a regular M3 back in another thread a while ago. Have you been able to weigh it yet, Joe?
VT325 10-22-2002, 09:20 PM I don't think the weight advantage is that big for a 325 versus an M3. Not sure about stock curb weights for the two but I did weigh my 95 325is once on certified scales.
It weighed 3140 pounds with a 1600-1540 distribution. Full tank of gas, sport package and sunroof. This may give you some idea about joe's car. Also, FWIW, I think larger wheels and brakes so are one of the biggest contributors to the extra weight of the M.
QuestMCoupe 10-22-2002, 11:31 PM I havent weight my car yet but I'm thinking it should be close to or about the same as VT's car. I dont think theres much of difference between my car and a M3 either plus I have these heavy ass wheels...but who knows.
Rel44 M3 10-23-2002, 12:23 AM I wonder how much weight the additional reinforcements to the chassis on the M3 adds. Anyway, I still think your car's a little lighter, Joe, but the huge margin you won by should indicate a much bigger advantage. Too many variables to factor in here, so I'll just say again, nice win. :)
QuestMCoupe 10-23-2002, 12:53 AM Thanks:)
SilverStreak 10-23-2002, 12:31 PM Yeah, I'm not sure either, with the Z3, the M Roadster does not have a spare (the 3.0 does) and still weighs 200 lbs more than the Z3 3.0, curb weight to curb weight... :dunno
