View Full Version : Paint on speakers? Need help fast!
theruss1an1 03-30-2006, 04:05 AM Hey Im in the middle of painting my interior and those little speakers and tweeters in the doors are a diffrent color than what Im painting the doors. If I were to paint over the top mesh would that be bad for the speaker? Im a complete noob when it comes to audio. Thanks guys.

LS6777 03-30-2006, 04:37 AM Um... This is just my opinion, but I wouldn't paint straight over the mesh or the grill. You might get some paint on the speaker, which won't do to much, but may affect the sound a little. The biggest problem I can see is clogging up the mesh which would affect the sound a lot coming from those tweeters
malibu73 03-30-2006, 10:52 AM DO you have the door panel off? If so just unscrew the midrange and the tweeter detach the mesh from the speaker and then paint them.

On some cars, those speakers are glued into the grilles.
wsmc831 03-30-2006, 01:04 PM just be careful. no spray if you don't take the driver out.

they are on most i have seen, but with a small flat head, they can be pried out pretty easily, and without damaging them. i think the glue is only to stop the vibrations, and the clips are what actually hold them in
wsmc831 03-30-2006, 01:07 PM not really a glue either, more of a putty. they all come out pretty easily with a small flathead screwdriver.
theruss1an1 03-30-2006, 02:04 PM I tried to take the mesh out, kinda stuck in there. Ill try some more today afer work. Those outside rings are so weak, Im afraid of breaking something. So pretty much dont paint unless if its taken apart?
On another note, used how much will those 4 cost?

take the panel off, you'll see how they're mounted...it isn't a 'ring' around the grill, it's all one piece. Grill, surround, enclosure, driver....it's all threaded with a big locking ring on the back side.
take the panel off, take out the driver to do it right, and don't put it on very tight or you'll stress the lip and crack it and be up shits creek.
morganbressler 03-30-2006, 02:23 PM If you have black ones, Ill buy your 4" midrange speakers/housing.
theruss1an1 03-30-2006, 06:35 PM ^ I just painted the interior black. haha. Looking for the same thing.
wsmc831 - I got my hole interior all taken apart, I didnt try to take the speaker out from the front of the door panel. The ring Im taking about is the one that is outside the mesh. Its glued to the speaker. Part of it is already broken off when I bought the car. Since you say its all one piece I guess Ill just try to find a black pair. I guess Im in the same ship as morganbressler now. Thanks all.

yep, you need new ones. if you look at the back of the door panel, you'll see how they come off.
morganbressler 03-30-2006, 08:47 PM Good luck. IF people have them, they want an arm and a leg.

RGNASNe36 03-31-2006, 01:53 AM I hope your not painting it some off the wall color like yellow or red. I have seen too many ricers do that and it looks so ugly. You could tell they didnt know what they were doing because it was like caked on there. So please be careful and keep your bimmer clean.
Jfstu 03-31-2006, 02:51 AM Any particular reason you are painting the interior of a BMW? Jesus. lol
theruss1an1 03-31-2006, 03:18 AM Nah, I got pink and black theme going on....... yellow and red just dont do it for me. Gotta keep up with the emo world.
Well actually Im painting it black. Dash all black, center councel all black, doors have a really light gray in the middle and the outside is black. The stock color is light gray and some weird gray blue color looking mix. Looks nasty. Carpet is still that color, but its more of a blue... its not bothering me yet. Everything looks like factory black except the top of the dash, hard to paint there. Like right where the dash meets the windshield, there is still little of that stock color there. And top of the dash the paint wouldnt stick too well, looks like its faded black. Rest of it is fine and I painted it all even, so not sure what is wrong there. Ill have a little paint left tomorrow, Ill try to fix it a bit more, if not Ill do it sooner or later. But overall I think it looks good. My first real painting job. Ill post pics in the e36 forum probably on sunday.

theruss1an1 03-31-2006, 03:22 AM Not trying to be a post whore but what speakers can I get for the doors that are black from the aftermarket. Tweeters too.
