View Full Version : Highway Beating: M3 vs. Camero

Decided to go trolling for a race tonight, but after an unsatisfactory night of leaving the ricers in awe and not getting a single bite from anything decent I decided to head for home.

I was running down this nice 2 lane highway as I passed a red Camero Z28 sitting at a light. I have a shitty memory for details but Im pretty sure I saw square headlights so I think it was an LT1. This highway runs for about another mile before it splits to 1 lane or up on to I-70(nice spot to race), so I slowed down to about 50 to see if the Camero would run up to meet me. Unfortuntely, I saw no signs of him speeding up to get me so I just continued up onto I-70...

About 5 minutes later, a 1/4 mile from my exit this guy goes cruising past in the left lane. I was about to ignore him and get off anyway(the next exit is about 6 miles away) but my friend was eggin me on and Evil Mikey prevailed. :devillook

After about a minute of me following him down this perfect stretch(about 1/2 mile straight, downhill then leveling off at the bottom) with no juice I decided to entice him. I rolled by him, shifted to 4th, waited for him to look over, smiled and gave it a little(4th isnt all that impressive at like 75). Still nothing. I decided it was time to be more aggressive so I dropped to 3rd, engine humming at like 5200 rpm. I got beside him and popped the throttle, nice little jolt. I started to get back next to him when I heard it...well kind of heard it, I heard more wind noise than his engine which seemed strange. Anyway, he took off like a shot, probably getting 1.5-2 cars on me and gaining. I bounced off the limiter in 3rd, went to 4th and kept following him. 90, 100, 110, he's about 4-5 cars ahead, givin me a whomping! We cruised for about 3 or so miles at 110 or so, bumping it up to 5th gear and 120 near the end. I was always at least 3 or so cars back. He got the edge in the curvy parts of the highway because Im not comfortable with the limits of my car at 110 when i have a passenger.

Well it was a fun ride home. I dont mind getting stomped, at least not by something with 2 more cylinders and 2.7 more liters! :) The only sucky part was we followed him off the exit and followed him around a few turns but he never stopped and talked with us, I was interested to see if he was modified. The only thing I could hear was a loud rumble at idle but Im not sure if the stock exhaust is that loud or not.

Ah well, a nice run, gave me more respect for the Camero!

I wonder if anyone will go nuts with me spelling Camaro wrong every time. ;)

LT1's are pretty fast, they are no LS1, if it were a LS1, I have a feeling it would of been like 6 car lengths. But still, Nice run, and its possible the LT1 had mods.

The LT1 only has 20 Hp less what makes the LS1 SO muchg faster.

The LS1 in the F-body is grossly underrated. My stock '01 T/A, which is rated at 310 flywheel hp, dyno'd 311 rwhp/334 rwtq at 1,800 miles. The car was bone stock in every way. That is positive drivetrain loss :)

Yes, that the design of the LS1 vs LT1. LT1 was amazing out of the hole, low end torque galore, but ran out of breath at speed, where the LS1 retains the low end torque and grunt out fo the hole but has much longer legs and continues to pull up top at speed.

Everyone says the LT1 has more low end torque, but the dyno does not show that to be true in my experience. I have owned a couple LT1 F-bodies, and agree that it *feels* stronger down low. It is my opinion that we are confusing throttle response with torque. The LT1 has 2 48mm throttle plates, while the LS1 has 1 75mm throttle plate. The smaller plates should provide more air velocity, and thus more throttle response. Remember, this is my opinion only.

I think the LT1 and LS1 have very similar low end torque, just that the LS1 has much longer legs, whereas the LT1 runs out of breath, thus perceptions being what they are, the LT1's low end torque is more emphasized than it is in the LS1, you know what I mean??

I currently own a '01 camaro z28(LS1) and a '97 bmw m3. On the chevy, I have it chipped, high flow throttle body, airlid, and exhaust. All else is stock. On the M3 I have it a little hopped up. Dinan SC and more, too much more i'm afraid. On to the drag race.

I run 13.50's all day with the z28 and I never took the m3 to the track, so I have no idea what it will run. My buddy was in my camaro and I had the m3. We sat at an onramp to a newly resurfaced expressway and looked for cops up ahead. None in sight. We could only see for about 1/2 mile though because of the high walls. We both stabbed the throttle. The camaro and I were dead even through 1st and second gear. I shifted into third and started to pull on him. Once I shifted into fourth, it was all over for the camaro. I pulled on him like he was standing still and gained by about 15 car lengths. I let off at 140 and he caught up to me with a big grin on his face.

He swears that he didn't let off and he couldn't miss a shift because it is an automatic. The camaro has a 3.42 in it and that is all that I can think of that makes it decent off of the line.

After that we tried it at a 60mph roll. In 4th gear I got all of my power and pulled away.

My M3 will never see a drag strip and I haven't pushed it too hard since. I will do little throttle blips every once and a while when people with tuners and such come up to me and want to show off.

That's my story with an LS1..

Welcome to BimmerForums. By the way, if the Z28 has an auto, shouldn't it have 3.23's (gears) in it??? 3.42's were for the 6 spd, if memory serves....

I believe that's correct. The 3:23 was actually the 'performance' rear end, while 2:73 was stock. All 6-speeds had 3:42's from the factory.

Your memory serves you perfectly correct. In '01 they put a 3.42 in the convertibles with 4spd auto and zexel torsion rear end. I was thinking that someone might pick up on that after I posted, but it was too late. They told me this at my dealership and I could not find any documentation to prove it though. The only way that I really know is when I had the goo replaced in the rear end, we took it apart and counted teeth. 3.42 it is.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Also, your '94+ F-body is not "chipped", as there is no replaceable chip like on older cars.

Hypertech.... Close enough to being chipped...

Can't we all get along...
