Z-Thrizzle 03-23-2006, 11:38 AM Thanks guys…I ended up going to this spot where I get my haircut and it was good. Cube63, 63 Clinton street (by Delancy/Essex)
It's a small place so I would recommend a getting reservation. It's kinda of a trendy place with music. It's BYOB which I thought was great…save on cash. Picked up a nice bottle of wine at a nice wine store about a block away.
Oh, and she was impressed if you know what I mean;)
dude8383 03-23-2006, 04:26 PM wow thats a nice place! good choice..
ken_vs_ryu 03-23-2006, 09:31 PM mt fuji is far from sushi.
i'll try that cube63
Effervescent 03-23-2006, 10:19 PM BTW the correct answer was Kazu off 7th Ave South in the Village.
Female sushi chef which is very unusual (psst...she's named Kazu), handmade tofu, high end green tea, small. Homegirl does the ceramic cups/bowls herself! Order the chef special for two. She looks over at you, sizes you up, and designs a meal for ya.

Phil,
Sorry for the late reply. I don't frequent so much anymore. Firstly I have to say nonexpensive sushi = bad news. by nature, fish is expensive.
I say a cool underground place is Sakagura 211 E43rd Street. From the outside, it looks like a commercial bldg in Midown. Go underground and you are greeted by a dramatic post modern Japanese interior with heated toilet seats for the chics. The menu is tapas style with a lot of variety from asian vegetarian to poultry and meats. They have sashimi too. The gem of this place is their 300 strong sake menu. It is quite an experience and I would recommend the trickle filtered sake family group. they are all good.
For a fun fusion style place: Sushi Samba. It's got the brand name so if she is going home to tell her bros and hos, this is the place. I'm more of a purest... read on
Blue Ribbon Sushi 199 Sullivan St. Fantastic sushi, minimalist decor, cozy. Caters to late nighter so you'll see city sushi chefs eating there, amongst a celebrity or two. It's one of those places that make celebrities wait just like us.
Tomoe Sushi 172 Thompson St. This is where hardcore people sit like sardines to eat great fish. Hardly any decor, line waiting outside. always fresh, always exotic.
Sakagura is a great authentic place good for dates. Sushi Samba would be my second choice. But if you find out she loves sushi, then Tomoe and Blue Ribbon will be your secret weapon to turn it up a notch.

sirtiger 03-27-2006, 11:52 AM I eaten all over NYC for good sushi.
Yama is one of my fav place to eat sushi. For a cheaper but less known, give Marumi a try right by NYU.
Many of the listed above are decent too. Nobu is tough to get in, but great too for a diff. experience

Minado on 32nd st btwn 5th and Madison.
$24 all u can eat buffet. SURPRISINGLY VERY GOOD and i've eaten at a lot of sushi places (including some that were extremely pricey $100+ per person).
15 yards of sushi, hibachi (sp?) and 15 more yards of non-sushi.
