Drew K. 03-18-2006, 10:17 PM How about those diesels? I'd love to see some more tech info on them... I think RE had something a while back, I'll have to dig through my old issues...
Diesels may be taking over racing??? discuss
Drew K. 03-18-2006, 11:51 PM Audi R10 TDI wins Sebring... this is gonna get good!!!
Propane 03-19-2006, 12:06 AM I saw the very end of it, good racing and loved how the diesels preformed... I have it on videotape so Ill be watching it over the next few days
madsedan 03-19-2006, 10:51 AM I was at the track and it was amazing how quiet the diesel Audi's were, easily half the noise level of the other cars.
Vinci 03-19-2006, 02:23 PM I was there all day yesterday. I could not get over how quiet the R10 was. Simply amazing. Too bad BMW got a rash of junk trannies and couldn't finish :mad.
Jmabarone 03-19-2006, 05:52 PM I got some pretty crappy videoes from that night, post your email and I'll send them to you, around 12, I think.

ScottMC 03-19-2006, 06:13 PM Audi. 5k rev limit. 3-5k is the power band making 800ft lbs. CRAZY. Nice to see Aston Martin come in 2nd and 3rd in GT1, finally some good comp. for the C6-R's. Ferraris f430 came in 3rd for GT2, I was kinda hoping they would of done better, but its still a podium finish. Looking forward to the next event.
Charlie 03-19-2006, 06:28 PM Well, the "diesel" car with an F1 budget showed that it could beat up on, well, a 3 year old P2 car.
The Dysons were never a factor, and most of the P1 class (All 6 of them) had crapped out by the halfway mark. The Porsche showed up pretty much all of the non-Audi field but shook itself to death over the track. On the shorter, smoother races, it will be unstoppable.
The Vettes and Astons had an occasional dice, and the series owner's car did a nice job blowing off the GT2 field. Otherwise, the "race" was pretty much a snoozer.

David A 03-19-2006, 07:57 PM Yeah, it's unfortunate that BMW dropped out...I was really pulling for them...atleast they were there this year. ;)
As for the Audi R10...pure sex. I still like the RS Spyder even more, though...what an awesome looking machine.
Steve J. 03-19-2006, 08:45 PM Strange how they both had transmission problems...I wonder if the normal Hpattern hewlands would have had similar problems, or if it was something with the seqeuntial components.
Audi is sick, and porsche is crazy fast, Audi just needs a better sounding exhuast, its too damn quiet :)
And the c6r and Aston's, unreal speeds, amazing how fast they are.

Cubic capacity: 5500 cc
Power: 650+ hp
Torque: 1100+ Nm
Clutch: ceramic
Gearbox: Pneumatically-actuated 5-speed

Both E46s were using a new sequential gearbox, and they both failed in the same way. They actually pulled the second car off the track and replaced the tranny, which then failed later. Methinks that a certain tranny manufacturer won't be making next year's model :).
Steve J. 03-19-2006, 11:02 PM Were they both Hewlands? Thats very odd, normally thier stuff is extremely reliable.
What actually broke in the trans? Was it a hewland part, or was it something that was made to accomodate BMW specific application?
Vinci 03-20-2006, 12:14 AM I don't remember the name of the manufacturer, but Hewland doesn't ring a bell. The BMW dude didn't mention exactly what went wrong, but they had a team of engineers from the manufacturer on-site working on it.
Steve J. 03-20-2006, 12:23 AM At the jan test days they had Hewlands, but they also looked like Hpatterns.
They are running Xtrac sequentials in ALMS PTG now.
Jim Sykes 03-23-2006, 09:54 PM The Vettes and Astons had an occasional dice, and the series owner's car did a nice job blowing off the GT2 field. Otherwise, the "race" was pretty much a snoozer.

Wow, I guess you will never be happy eh?
With the Vette finishing about 6 tenths of a second behind the Aston for third place and pretty much swapping spots all race long, I'd call that more than an "occassional dice."
Likewise, the Risi Ferarri led much of the first half of the race and in the end the top three cars in GT2 were all on the same lap and within 40 seconds of each other after 12 hours.
Not quite sure how that translates into "the series owner's car (which it isnt any longer seeing as how Multimatic runs the team NOT Panoz) did a nice job of blowing off the rest of the GT2 field."
Seriously, if you can enjoy those things, then I guess you need to watch Daytona and be happy with 20 cars running around in a circle on the same lap for 250 circles.
Sebmista 03-23-2006, 09:56 PM hah i was there working the rock wall at the Royal Caribbean Tents

There was no intrigue or interest to it. All it was was the huge budget Audi doing timed laps over 12 hours. The Dysons were out to lunch and off the pace like normal, and the only "competition" for the car came from a class that is designed to be slower and less reliable. The results were never in doubt from the drop of the green.
All this was was a publicity stunt in a country that could care less about diesels.

Jim Sykes 03-24-2006, 12:39 AM Like I said, go enjoy your NASCAR as you obviously have no clue about endurance sports car racing or are just another Grand Am troll trying to put down the ALMS and ACO.
If you really followed the race you would have known that the car that won was in the garage just before the race replacing a heat exchanger and could have had the problems return any time. You would also have known that the other Audi retired during the race with overheating issues, which could have cropped up in the other car at any time. You would also have realized that the Dyson cars have only been in their possession for less than two months and were doing incredibly well for that. You could have enjoyed the idea that the Intersport P2 car could have possibly one overall if the Audi ran into more problems. Or that the Porsche P2 cars were both having issues but blazingly fast and offered suspense as to whether or not they were going to catch Intersport. You could have enjoyed the fact that the Astons and Corvettes were swapping places and fought right to the end for position crossing the finish line after twelve hours less than a second apart for third place. Or you could have looked to GT2 where the entire podium were under a minute of each other and swapped positions many times over the race and two new cars finished on the podium.
There were a ton of stories in this years race and if you cant look past the fact that two cars were not wheel to wheel as they crossed the line for the overall lead (while there were battles this close in other classes) then you dont understand or appreciate sports car racing. Sounds like a nice 500 miles in a circle by spec cars running good 'ol fashioned leaded fuel is your thing. Enjoy it.

Man, you sure are getting bent out of shape over one race fan's opinion of a race. You sound like I ran over your dog or something. I swear to god, ALMS "fans" are some of the most defensive people I have ever met.
What's the matter, Scotty A's check not clear yet?
