Leaving the gas cap too loose is a common cuase of the CEL going on. Fortunately, it's one of the few CEL codes that will clear itself out after the car has been started a few times.

If the CEL doesn't go away after a few days, you should find someone that has an after market BMW code reader (or go buy one) and have them read the code that's stored in the car's computer. Then you'll know for sure what the cause of the problem is.
