View Full Version : AA Whiple Twin Screw
darkness95m3 03-16-2006, 10:04 AM Hi Guys,
I'm on holidays here in Miami and decided to visit AA to have a look around. There are a few interesting projects going around including the Whiple Twin Screw e36 supercharger.
The Hp numbers that were given to me are 425Hp, however it still is not confirmed.
What I like about this unit is that it is a very clean install, basically anyone who has never opened the hood of an e36 this unit would look like it came from the factory.
Great job AA.
Shuasha 03-16-2006, 10:43 AM And one of these years they'll actually start SELLING the kit..
Eurosport in Salt Lake City already has a twin screw kit out for the E36 that looks stock too, everybody is very happy with it. They beat AA to market because they started mass production a few years earlier, hopefully AA will have theirs out soon.
chisau 03-16-2006, 11:32 AM hae to beat a dead horse, but what unit is being used by AA? This is what is on their site: http://www.aatuning.com/supercharger/tse36m3/main.php
In the caption it says 1.6L Whipple, in the body of the description it says 1.7L Autorotor. Which one is it???:help

I have never delt with Eurosport, therefore I can't say anything about them. However I have delt with AA for the past 2 years. I had an issue with my Rotrex unit which even when the warranty expired they repaired it at no charge. Yes you may pay a little bit more by going through AA however they do stand behind their product and customers.
Tanks95 03-16-2006, 11:48 AM is that 425 WHP or BHP? If its BHP then it's on par with Eurosport. Depending on the percentage of drive train loss given.
They few time I have called AA on the phone I havent had the best service and they didnt help me out very much. I havent dealt with them alot just with the header/track pipe and it was a PITA. Never have had a problem with eurosport Josh is a great guy and takes the time to answer your anyoying questions. :)

AA normally claims crank HP. It makes the numbers look higher. Most pople who start modding cars refer to wheel hp.

THIS IS NOT FACT AND I'M SURE AA OR STIMPEE WILL GIVE US THE HEADS UP ON THIS BUT ONLY A GUESS BECAUSE I LIKE GUESSING.
Computer screens don't change words on its own not to mention the color of the text (red), spell, and get the description correctly as well. Whipple makes the 1.6L and the Autorotor 1.7L so for it to be wrong, the computer would have to have magically switched the name of the supercharger on its own, chage the color of the text and change the displacement of the blower by .1L too. Don't think it's a coincidence. I think they are going to start using Autorotors due to competition of sales/more "stage selection". Autorotor makes a 1.7, 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4L. However, Whipple jumps from a 1.6L all the way to a 2.3 because they are an American company which caters to a larger discplacement crowd. Autorotor is European thus cater to a more universal crowd not to mention a longer history with TSs, yada, yada.
Now, since companies like to come out with stage 1,2,3,4 or whatever for the power hungry crowd, once the 1.6L Whipple unit reaches a certain point, it's out of its efficiency range and has to jump all the way to a 2.3L which would be beyond overkill even for like a "stage 4"(if proportionally rising in PSI rate from stage 1 which is 8-9 PSI) not to mention the effects on driveability, boost response etc., on a BMW 6. So the Whipple 1.6L would be close to max for a "stage 2" and out of its efficiency range for a "stage 3". I asked someone if Whipple has an in between blower and the answer was no. So, the Autorotor would be the next perfect candidate for TSs because their blowers are not only very well built, but offers more selection for an ideal set up. A 2.0L Autorotor would be perfect for a "stage 3,4 or 5" IMO which the Whipple does not offer...yet apparently. :dunno
Anyway, 425 TS HP would be sooo sweet for a stage 2.

I have dealt with both companies and can say Josh wins hands down for excellent service and knowledge.

dinans3m3 03-16-2006, 06:00 PM No need to turn this into an AA vs Eurosport thread which it seems as though its heading that way. Both kits will probably make the same power give or take a few unnoticeable hp figures. The only question distinguishing the two will be price and tuneability. Im sure once AA releases their kits to the public, there will be some happy customers as well. Eurosport customers have also been well satisfied. :)

Whipple NEVER made TS units untill this year. Although it was called a Whipple 1.6 it was really a SRM Lysholm Technologies 1.6 NOT a Whipple. Whipple only distributed the units. The units are built in Europe just like the Autorotor.

I know what TS AA will be using but I will let Steve tell you.

I feel like I'm getting Deja Vu. We cleared this up last week no? Did you read what I wrote on that thread cuz apparently you didn't hence the repeat of the history lesson and "whipple never made TS until recently" which I already know. When you said Whipple never made TS's til recently, I guessed SRM right away. You already sent me the TS history link. When I said "made" I meant sell/sold, slaps a Whipple sticker on a diff blower. Sorry to have confused you but easy with the political technicality of the TS companies please. I even gave you the ACS analogy. What, everytime some says ACS makes tight rims, I'm not going to go :nono "ACS doesn't make rims, Ronal does".

I have no problem reading. Why don't you re-read and also read between the lines.

Opcon Group (2004)
In 2004, Lysholm Technologies and the Opcon Group merged, in hope of combining forces and taking the screw compressor to the next level of high volume production. Although this seemed good on paper, this created issues with delivery to the aftermarket distributors. The last quarter of 2004 and first two quarters of 2005 showed very little production of twin-screw compressors through Lysholm Technologies. This put a tremendous strain on the world’s largest aftermarket twin-screw compressor distributor, Whipple Industries.
Whipple Superchargers (2005 and up)
Due to the lack of delivery and sever back order level, Whipple Superchargers began development of their own line of superchargers.
I think the SRM Lysholm unit is very hard to get at this time as very few are coming into the country other then the ones for FORD.

I am not at all ticked. It's just that many people (including myself at one point) don't know much about the TS. Many still call as TS units a Whipple.

///M3weee... 03-17-2006, 01:41 AM I hate the internet for that because you can't hear the person's tone when they write. Anyway, I thought Whipple made their blowers too but then after reading the TS history it all made sense. Talk about complex corporate politics hun! Also, I was like, there exists a sophisticated and competent facility in Fesno CA, to produce high quality TS blowers. I know they pump out produce in the region but TS's? Possible but perplexing. The new Whipple's look impressive though and now that most of the basic R/D has been done in Europe for years now, they can improve on top of that which is tight. Also being a domestic fanatic before going Euro, I knew about Whipple's old line and when I recently read an old article from my stash of Hot Rod mags, I saw an article on a carburated V8 with a Whipple 2.1L and I was like hun, they had a 2.1L? Now it all makes sense.
JasonM3er 03-17-2006, 01:43 AM I can't imagine what this thing would do to my engine. :(
