View Full Version : $ Shifting Question

Okay, here's the story.

I'm letting a friend drive my car, he rows through 1st and 2nd gear, and is going into 3rd, but puts it back into 1st. The engine revs up, but he doesn't let the clutch out all the way. There were no sounds or anything when that happened.

Just to check, I stopped the car and popped the hood-no oil spills or anything.

So then I decided to see if the car's lost any performance, but I rowed through all the gears and it is pulling just as hard as it always has.

My question is if there could possibly be anything wrong, since I was under the belief that when you $ shift a motor, it makes a boom/knocking sound, white smoke comes out of the exhaust, and oil is everywhere. None of the above happened, and the car is running extremely good.

I just need to check with the fellow Bf.c ers and make sure its ok.

I'm not an expert or anything but I would guess and say its alright. I'd just keep an eye on everything for the next couple of days, make sure everythings going right.

It should be ok. If he money shifted the engine should of died right on the spot.

That's what I thought. He never released the clutch all the way, and the engine never sounded like it was dying. There was no noise, no knocking/ticking, no smoke, nothing. It accelerates just as hard as it did before the near-death-incident, so I'm thinking its perfectly fine. Just wanted to make sure. Thanks.

ooh, there goes his driving privledges. I don't think the v8s are as prone to the $ shift as the I6s.

It is usually very hard to get a moving car back into first. Did the guy run it up, or was he keeping it below 2k? If he revved it when pulling it out of 2nd and he was in low revs to begin with, he coul have rev-matched it accidentally such that he was able to push it in with minimal effort. Yeah, I would be worried about the trans if this was not the case, though. The engine sounds fine; usually a moneyshift has immediate and cataclysmic consequences. The sound is very specific, it's the sound of your wallet being jacked mixed with screeching metal and the intake of breath as you prepare to unleash a torrent of vile words that make young children liquify.

It's hard enough just to get a smooth downshift from 2nd to 1st under 10mph let alone from 3rd to 1st without grinding the hell out of the gears.

Wow, consider yourself lucky and keep him as far away from your ride as possible. Although, you gotta give the guy a little credit for not letting the clutch all the way out.

You're probably in good shape.

If the engine didn't get near redline, you're fine. Even if it did, you'd know if there was something wrong, like pieces sticking out the side of your block. That's obviously not the case, though. It's not like a 2 stroke where if you downshift and engine brake you lose almost all oil lubrication.

Yeah i would think the engine doesn't care how you shift really so long as it doesnt redline. Just an assumption. The gearbox on the other hand...

Yes it was my friend :confused

I didn't freak out though, I figured if it was really bad I would have heard some explosion or knocking or something of the sorts. Car is running hard so no worries. I don't think I'll be letting him drive it again though :nono
