View Full Version : Barber roll call
gobuffs 03-12-2006, 07:37 PM Who is going to Barber this year?
A large group of Dallas people are going (as usual). I won't be racing but will be in the DE portion. I hope to have my CM E30 M3 sorted enough to take it...otherwise I will be sharing another E30 M3.
B.Watts 03-12-2006, 08:49 PM I assume we'll be down there.
GroovinPickle 03-12-2006, 08:55 PM I might make the DE again this year. Hopefully the run groups will be well-sorted and not too crowded.
If anyone coming for the weekend has a set of new or used RA-1s (235/40-17 or 255/40-17) that they want to part with, let me know. I've got some tires for the event but need to pick up some more in the near future.
SG_M3 03-12-2006, 09:48 PM i'll be there.
DessicatorGC 03-12-2006, 11:10 PM I'll be there doing my 1st CCA DE :)
SRiley 03-12-2006, 11:39 PM Already signed up... :redspot
qwickm3 03-13-2006, 12:18 PM I'll be co-driving with Montana in CM. I'm coming for you Watts;)
B.Watts 03-13-2006, 12:23 PM I'll be co-driving with Montana in CM. I'm coming for you Watts;)
Are you driving the track backwards? Or are you just expecting to see me when I come around to lap you? :D
SRiley 03-13-2006, 12:25 PM Are you driving the track backwards? Or are you just expecting to see me when I come around to lap you? :D
:lol Very witty, Bryan.
hinzm3 03-13-2006, 01:11 PM Will be at the DE
SRiley 03-13-2006, 01:33 PM Full Monty,
Any more details on the host hotel other than
Hampton Inn - Trussville? It was full last year when I finally got around to making a reservation. Want to make sure it doesn't happen again.
Thanks,
Scott
maranelloman 03-13-2006, 02:28 PM Likely.
Lemming 03-13-2006, 02:35 PM I'll be there instructing.
Scott - consider the Holiday Inn Express (you'll wake up an F1 Driver), or Hampton in Irondale, they are only slightly farther from the track (8-10 miles I'm guessing) than Trussville. Leeds is closer, but I'm not sure which hotels are up there. Lot's off hotels on 280 just off of 459. There also many good eateries and bars in that area.
simonh 03-13-2006, 02:51 PM I'm probably about 60/40 right now, depends how many cars are there, I definitely would like to check this track off the list. The SA isn't exactly a hot bed for JS cars.

:alright 4 or 5 IP cars.... Looking forward to actually racing someone this time.
CorgiCoupe 03-14-2006, 10:57 AM I'll be there for the DE. Also coming from the Atlanta area, but I'm told that I20 in AL is no better than last year, and may be worse in spots, so expect to add to your travel time. :(
Mike will you have the new engine done in time...I should have mine back this week. Again! New bumper /spitter/fenders Are on the way too. I need some wider tires if your going to be in D-mod.

sunir 03-14-2006, 12:12 PM looks like this is the Premier event in May we're talking about...I'll either do this or VIR in April...Barber park seems to be well suited for a 3.91 diff (which I have in car now)...it was too short for Summit where I first tested it out a couple of weeks ago. So if I can get the 3.73 done and in the car then that'll be the choice for VIR, if not than the 3.91 (as the car sits) for Barber park...then again VIR closer but Barber is a premier event...this is like a scale...
Just talked to Montana and he's jazzed about the Barber event:) ...he thinks the 3.91 in something like an HP M3 with a factory 5 spd would be almost ideal for Barber ...so I'm thinking certain tracks like Barber, Lime Rock, Mid Ohio would suit this gear ratio quite well.
vanderson 03-14-2006, 12:15 PM I'll be there, I'm looking forward to seeing Barber, and we should have a great IP field.
Vern
IP #186
red88M3 03-14-2006, 12:43 PM I'll be there.:redspot
Hopefully i won't do something stupid this year and my car will last past Friday morning.
B.Watts 03-14-2006, 01:05 PM I'm looking forward to getting to Barber with some gears that will actually put us above 3000 RPM coming out of the slow corners!
What gear are you running? Are you still running the 4.45 with the 6 speed or somrthing different?

B.Watts 03-14-2006, 02:21 PM What gear are you running? Are you still running the 4.45 with the 6 speed or somrthing different?
Same gearing. Last time we were at Barber, it was a 3.91. Combined with no VANOS on our motor, we were having a really hard time pulling out of the slower corners.
Montana 03-14-2006, 06:12 PM I will be there!! Damion Moses charges big $$$$ so I can get him to co drive.... I think my money will be well spent. :cool
maranelloman 03-14-2006, 06:22 PM Lol....

I'm hoping so. Planning on it. Told it should happen. Only time will tell.
Either way, I'm hoping some records will fall with warmer weather and track conditions with more grip than we experienced last month.
Since you are raising the bar in DM, I guess I'll have to try to find some other type of upgrade to keep up with that Sunbelt monster motor if I'm running in DM or keep Watts and Montana/Moses in sight if I'm still thrashing around in CM. :)
What ever...I think the engine you are building will we plenty fast. From what I hear you will be putting down some serious power. Either way it should be a good time. I just hope I can get everything done in time.

Randy 03-15-2006, 02:34 PM I'll be at Barber's and I live in the area, so if any of you need assistance with reservations, where to go and do etc. let me know. email me randy@platinumimports.us
I also have a lift and a shop available to help anybody that needs help or needs inspections.
Just rode some laps last Sunday and the track feels great!
Driverk 03-15-2006, 04:34 PM I'll be there for the DE. I'm replacing a few suspension parts, so I'm looking forward to seeing the difference between being stock last year and slightly modded this year.

Looks like I'll be there possibly co-driving with Ahmed. (Thanks buddy, I appreciate the opportunity).
If I can get the whole weekend off I'll run the weekend sprints in my CMod car.

Krisko, don’t reach to conclusions so fast :) Sean has a green car just like mine so he wont be co-driving with me (unless he decides he wants to swap to a faster car during Enduro ;)
Ahmad
GGray 03-22-2006, 04:51 PM I was going to race... but the race car is DOA seems someone got the bumbass award for leaving it in the rain with the hood open, no plugs in the new motor, while painting bicyle frames..rusty motor :help motor out and apart...block getting sleeved:(
I'll be there sorting the new turbo M3..and errrr instructing instructors..whatever that means:confused
Ahhh the race track....no pedaling required...
red88M3 04-11-2006, 10:28 AM Anyone know how many pitstops will be required for the enduro? The website says 1.5 hour race. When we ran the same distance @ TWS in 2005 there were two required, is that going to be the case?
maranelloman 04-11-2006, 10:31 AM Unknown. You might want to email Scott Montana.
LUTFY 04-11-2006, 10:52 AM Unknown. You might want to email Scott Montana.
One pitstop (mandatory 5 mins).
maranelloman 04-11-2006, 01:15 PM Thanks!
gobuffs 04-11-2006, 05:56 PM Poorly written rule....it says enduros less than 90 minutes require 1 stop, enduros greater than 90 minutes require 2 stops. Doesn't say anything about an enduro that is EXACTLY 90 minutes. :-)

sayer 04-11-2006, 06:01 PM Assuming my car makes it through VIR this weekend I'll be there. I'll be praying for dry weather. The Saturday monsoon at the last event was less than ideal. And it will be nice to have more IP cars.

I might have my car ready for some shakedown laps at the DE/race the end of the month (shocks supposed to be back Thursday- next week exhaust, alignment and then hopefully running!) I hope to find somebody to go out for the member day that Friday.

sunir 04-12-2006, 04:02 PM just wondering for all you Texas guys...there doesn't seem to be as many races in the Texas area this year whereas in the past you guys had a few good ones, some premier and nationals...why is that? just an off year for cr there :dunno
maranelloman 04-12-2006, 05:00 PM Well, we had a couple last year at TWS (one in conjunction with PCA). However, since then, TWS has significantly raised its rental rates, PCA wanted to do its own thing this year (in order to have a DE in conjunction wiht their club races, which brings in huge $$$), and BMWCCA can't afford the absurd TWS rental rates alone, even with a DE, since we have relatively few racers here.
All IMO.

I hear ya Dave...seems like you guys have a really good bunch of BMW racers down there...it's not the largest group but there's a lot of folks who seem friendly and have a good time racin' together...:)
maranelloman 04-12-2006, 05:08 PM True dat. So we have 2 races planned at MSR, on the new 3.1 mile course. MSR is much less expensive to rent, and, in conjunction with a DE, can more than pay for itself.
vanderson 04-12-2006, 05:16 PM Don't forget about Hallett 9/23-9/24!!!!!! We need as many racers as possible!!! It's not that far from TX.....

Actually, we don't. Dave just kisses a lot of ass and makes it seem like everyone is his friend. However, his true intention is just to pimp rides for free! Really pretty sad... We are thinking about having a collection in his honor.

LUTFY 04-13-2006, 09:48 AM Now that this thread has some attention; how do you guys take Turn 4 (tight left hander-hairpinnish)? I usually go way right riding the two right tires almost on the curb, brake in a straight line and then hit a late apex making it a very long wide arc. I think in racing, I would lose position since someone would dive right into from the left, go in deep and make a much tighter turn. How do you guys take that turn? Apparently that's the one I have a rough time with. Does someone have a video for that track?
TIA
maranelloman 04-13-2006, 09:56 AM Here is a link for an in-car video from a Grand Am Cup 911, driven by my friend Mark Plummer. You will see he double-apexes it. In a race, IMO, unless you have clear track, yes you will lose position here if you go wide & do a "school" line. However, if you are all alone, IMO, the wide late-apex line is faster because you can carry more speed into & through mid-corner, and you have to trail brake less.
Please right click save as, this is 9 MB.

For an added fee, I will ride with you for a session that weekend.
:lol :lol :lol
sayer 04-13-2006, 10:00 AM I have a couple videos from Barber at the address on my sig. (why can't I include a URL on site site??) One is from my very first race, so pretty much ignore the line and watch the track. The other is in pouring rain from the Feb PBOC race.
B.Watts 04-13-2006, 10:15 AM (why can't I include a URL on site site??)
You need a certain number of posts to prove to the system that you aren't a spammer.
B.Watts 04-13-2006, 10:20 AM I just checked my video...I double-apex T4. Actually, it's more like one long apex. Hard to tell whether it's the fastest line or not as I was racing a LeMans podiuming Porsche that had a lot more power and out-accelerated me off the turn no matter how bad of a line he took. If someone is behind me, I would probably defend inside a bit...I doubt it would even cost me much on the turn exit due to the nature of the turn.
krisko 04-13-2006, 10:34 AM Now that this thread has some attention; how do you guys take Turn 4 (tight left hander-hairpinnish)?
Scott Montana knows that track as good as anybody (and he drives an e36). He told me to treat it as a decreasing radius turn. Go into the turn roughly in the middle of the track, braking done obviously then tighten steering taking a very late single apex. If done right, you should be able to get on power before the apex and you'll track all the way out.
I've always had a hard time finding this perfect line. It feels slow but I'm sure it's faster than diving in high and taking a typical hairpin line.

I would agree for the most part with Montana's line. The only change would be that I tend to take longer apex (mid through late) and lots of trailbraking! I find myself being able to use the hard trailbraking to get the back end to rotate as I am approaching the apex, then get back hard on the gas once I am set without losing too much momentum.

Lot's of trail braking is key because as you bend the car into the turn, you start to go across the heavy slope, which seeks to allow you to brake more than when you were going straight down it. I always feel like I'm going in a little hot but make up for it as the car slows down better after turning in.
ceegeezM3 04-13-2006, 11:21 AM You'll definitely want to watch for dive bombs in T4 on the first lap or two, as well. I just missed getting tagged in the enduro last year... you can hear the crunch (http://ceegeez.com/videos/crvids/barber.wmv) when the perp nails the car just to my right.

Was that Mainini hitting someone? I can't remember. I do remember driving Matt Groner's E46 M3 in that race....man, was that fun!!
ceegeezM3 04-13-2006, 11:51 AM Ha... yeah, that was Mainini. He went out and bought a BBK kit right after that little incedent. :stickoutt
Montana 04-17-2006, 11:09 PM Thought this might be a good place for a Barber Update -
I was there this weekend and they have power polls in the paddock!!!!
Yes - They now have power available in the paddock!!!
Those who have been the last few years know this has not been available and we all have wondered why not at such a top notch facility -
Hope to see everyone soon - :cool
gobuffs 04-18-2006, 07:33 AM Sweet...I guess we can leave our generator at home this year!

I had a pretty good view of that crunch but I don't have any videos online. It was a very simple deal...someone took their normal line even though another car was there. I was told to report to Bud and bring my video camera with me.
I'm still not sure if the E36 guy got a 13 out of it.
B.Watts 04-18-2006, 08:57 AM Those who have been the last few years know this has not been available and we all have wondered why not at such a top notch facility -
This always blew my mind...hell, they make enough profit on what they overcharge for a section of ARMCO to power the entire paddock for a weekend. That said, how much do they charge to hook into their precious power poles?
MAkard 04-18-2006, 09:01 AM Sweet...I guess we can leave our generator at home this year!
I wouldn't plan on getting to actually USE their power.
maranelloman 04-18-2006, 09:12 AM I'll bet it will cost $50 per microwatt minute.

Well, I'm a lot better off than I was before MSR, but definitely not sure if everything is worked out yet. I still will not have any real test time. I'm putting a new flywheel and clutch on tonight, and I'm hoping the new fuel relay and fuel lines, along with proper plugs and a bunch of other stuff makes the car start a lot easier. I've fixed a bunch of other little things that surfaced also at MSR. Gas pedal willl hopefully stay on this time, I'm going to figure that out this weekend. I guess Friday's 90 min enduro will be my first test!
SG_M3 05-16-2006, 04:16 PM glad to hear it Vern.

LUTFY 05-23-2006, 11:40 AM Folks,
I can use from expert help here (please?) :)
I have my transponder in place but an unsure since I cannot tell if its powered on or not (having rookie brain fade here). Can anyone of you please take a peek at it Thursday night (I plan on being there around 8PM) to make sure its okay (just a precaution, the last thing I want is that I am not registering time or that my car wont pass tech)
Secondly (okay this may be a bit dumb), I noticed a small puddle of oil on my Sears aluminum jack. I will be brining it with me, can someone please help me out with filling in the fluid (speaking of which is there a particulurar type of oil I need to get)? I cannot RTFM since I was way smarter back then and chucked it out (duh).
Pretty embarissed about asking for help on these silly questions but I am more focused on getting the hans installed right, re-torqueing all the suspension bolts etc. THANKS in advance.
Ahmad
GroovinPickle 05-23-2006, 11:47 AM You can get hydraulic fluid for the jack at your FLAPS and probably at most hardware stores. To fill it take off that magnetic tray and remove the screw that isn't labelled "do not adjust" (or something like that). It's the bigger one under there. Don't fill it all the way. Put the screw back in and raise/lower the jack a few times without any weight on it. The system should bleed itself.
Start saving for a new floor jack - you've probably got another few months of use out of that leaky one (unless there's a fix that I don't know about). Mine started leaking after about 8 months and stopped lifting after about 11 months. I had it replaced under warranty (1 year).

green light on = power on
no light = not on
krisko 05-23-2006, 12:52 PM I don't think my AMB transponder has a light.
The only way to be positive the AMB is installed correctly is to see if you get times on your first practice at Barber. You might get a light but something might be block the AMB from picking up the beam.

The jack has maybe 4 lifts at the most and its leaking :( Maybe something is loose out there. I'll try this tonight. Thanks for the pointer :) If this thing leaks more again, I may have to take it back for replacement under warranty.
Dave, I didnt notice any light on my transponder either.
Thanks folks.

LUTFY 05-23-2006, 01:09 PM G/F wont be coming with me this time. Anyone needs a roommate?
elbert 05-23-2006, 01:11 PM I might be wrong on this, but I think you need to leave the screw *out* when bleeding the jack. Gently pump a few times to get the air out, then replace the screw.
If the jack is that new, I would just take the jack back to the store, play dumb and get a replacement.
dmwhite 05-23-2006, 02:03 PM the tranX260's have lights on them...

You are correct, I was going on memory.
Agreed about trying to get it replaced (or a refund) while it's still under warranty. Sears' return/warranty experiences seem to vary between stores. I got some tools for Christmas last year and tried to return them (still in the package) for credit and was denied because I didn't have the receipt. I took them to another store and they took them for credit at the retail price even though they had been purchased on sale.
Man, I wish we were going, but just raced at Roebling with NASA this past weekend. And we have a legal oil cooler, hope nobody gets caught out on that one, what a joke.
Mike Hinkley is looking for a co-drive, the guy is FAST in ANYTHING. Let us know.
Have fun down there, guess I'll be getting my fix on TV while I'm in the shop working on the race cars.
James.

Last I checked, no one has been DQ'ed for this and the rules folks are working on a change. As for us racers, it's up to us to submit rules change proposals for rules we think are silly.
It looks like a lot of the NC/VA locals aren't making it down to Alabama this time.
MAkard 05-23-2006, 07:40 PM James - Why not submit a rule change proposal?
Why should anyone need to submit a Rules Change Proposal?
The Chairman of the Rules Committee has openly admitted on this forum that we have "silly, stupid, and nonsensical" rules in our rulebook including this one. The four person Rules Committee is the sole authority on the rules making process. This is absolutely not a democracy. In fact, the only person on the Rules Committee that was voted upon by the racers was Xavier (the CRAC member), and he was only voted for by the folks in the Region he represents. The others were appointed by the Chairman himself. Yes, they were approved by the BMW CCA Board prior to being named, but once they are in their respective positions, they are free to promote their own interpretation(s) of the rules with absolutely no concern what racers have to say in a formal rule change proposal. It shouldn't make any difference what day of the year it is, since the same four folks determine what the rules will be regardless of what the racers request.
Surely you realize that Spec E30 has been submitted / mentioned repeatedly over the years don't you? How many folks do you think would vote against it compared to the folks that have repeatedly expressed the desire to include them in BMW CCA Club Racing? If votes had anything to do with it, there would likely be several changes made that are not in the best interest of keeping the 4 separate classes resembling 4 separate classes. Heck, they are already morphing Mod into SuperMod in addition to the class creep of Prepared into Mod that has been taking place for several years.
No, I don't think the proper adjustment of admittedly "silly, stupid, and nonsensical" rules should require playing games like waiting until a specific date to make the fix.....especially since it will be the same four folks that vote to make the change regardless what day it gets done. I am surprised you've fallen for thinking that it should need a formal request from a racer other than those on the Rules Committee to be considered by the Rules Committee whose Chairman has publicly admitted "silly, stupid, and nonsensical" rules need to be addressed!
This position does not condone the arbitrary rules clarification (often private) that has taken place in the past that failed to include the due process of a vote by the Rules Committee, but does promote convening a meeting of the Rules Committee anytime and every time something like this oil cooler issue comes up rather than waiting for a specific day to pop up on the calendar before doing the same right thing that made sense the day it came to everyone's attention. Doing the right thing shouldn't have to meet a preset schedule! :)
B.Watts 05-23-2006, 08:29 PM Mike - It just seems to me that you want the rules to committee to make a rules change that hasn't recieved any requests from racers to this point (oil filter housings) while complaining that the same rules comittee hasn't made a rules change that has recieved a lot of racer support/requests (Spec E30). In one instance you suggest that they should act independently of the racers, while in the other, you suggest they should make a rules change because "most" racers want it.
Now, I personally think that we need both changes. While a submission from a racer isn't required to push this oil filter housing thing through, I suggest it because it just seems a FAR more fruitful pursuit than the complaining on the internet and bad-mouthing the rules committee that I've seen from multiple folks in the last few weeks. Luckily, reports seem to indicate that the rules folks are already working on a change for oil coolers.

The Chairman of BMW CCA Club Racing admitted the rule needed to be changed. End of story on that one.
How many SECONDS do you think it should take to change the rule to permit the oil filter housing to be modified to attach the oil cooler?
My point about multiple racers was to show you how wrong you are about there being any NEED for a rule change request or that the number of folks submitting such has ANYTHING to do with what might happen. I'm NOT complaining about the Rules Committee, but instead the bogus idea that a self admitted "silly, stupid, and nonsensical" rule shouldn't be fixed until a specific date. I would think you could tell the difference.
B.Watts 05-23-2006, 09:25 PM Mike, I understand the difference, I just don't think we can "have our cake and eat it too" in this case. Keep in mind that Dave isn't the only person on the rules comittee...it might not be a silly rule to others. Further, it sounds as if the issue is being dealt with anyway.
MAkard 05-23-2006, 09:31 PM Mike, I understand the difference, I just don't think we can "have our cake and eat it too" in this case. If we want the rules committee to act on their own whim, we have to allow them to choose not to make rules that have support from the racers.
Support from racers has absolutely no bearing on what they decide. One request for change only suggests that they address the issue one way or the other, but has nothing to do with how they rule. They are not elected nor can they be impeached by racers. So, it really is at their whim regardless of when they address it and WHEN they address it is all that I'm really complaining about since the Chairman has already admitted "silly, stupid, and nonsensical".
B.Watts 05-23-2006, 09:45 PM Sorry Mike, you managed to reply before I edited.

Last question before my car passes tech ;) Anyone has a picture of a catch can installed on their car? I have heard people throwing in coke bottles and zip tying it. Whats the word here?
THANKS folks.
Ahmad
B.Watts 05-24-2006, 10:20 AM What are you installing the catch-can for? Diff, transmission, engine oil, coolant?

B.Watts 05-25-2006, 05:42 PM Stupid flat tire cost us 1.5 hours...now we're sitting here in bumper to bumper traffic on the 285 loop around Atlanta in the rig.
Brian: Hopefully you have the cooler close at hand, and at least you're going to race!! Atlanta is the worst part of that trip, and there ain't no way around it. Unless you do it before 6am.
GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!

B.Watts 05-25-2006, 06:45 PM We're rolling West on 20 now...traffic gets thinner as we get further from Hellanta. Hoping to get parked into the gate before 9!
B.Watts 05-25-2006, 11:58 PM So, we get to the gate and there's a LONG line of folks waiting to sign-in. I pull out my bike from the trailer and pedal up to the front to say hi to some folks. About the time I get there, an "IN-security" guard comes running up yelling at me to tell me that I must wear a helmet when "operating" a bicycle outside of the paddock area. I couldn't help but laugh...I knew I was back at Barber for sure. I should have gone back and gotten my race helmet to ride back up there. :)
skrissel 05-26-2006, 08:06 AM Bryan,
That's great, the race helmet would have been classic. We almost got in deep with secuirty last year putting the golf cart up on 2 wheels.
Have a safe, fun weekend!

I only got to watch the enduro on Friday and for the rest of the races I was passed the F out. The enduro Sean was out his diff bolt broke in lap 3, Chris Gant was out his hood flew up before the race even started, and Vern was having clutch problems so he was working on his car. I did take some pics I will post up tomorrow.
For the sprint race on Sat I think Chris was 1st in IP but had tranny problems so he couldn't race on Sun. Seans motor blew up with 1 lap to go on sat. I guess it was one of those weekends....
