My maintence plan just ended so i have to pay for oil changes now- about how much is avg for synthetic. It's a 745.

I did it myself for $56.

Oil is the expensive part.

Did mine last month, cost total $150.00 but told next change is after 10,000 miles of 6 months.

mobile one synthetic, 89 bucks a jiffy lube.

$75 at my indy, ~$120 at the dealership. either way, i do this every 3k miles.

I think 64 included 8qrts of mobile 1 10w30 and filter. All from Discount Auto.

I change my oil every 3k miles... as well....I would suggest just learn how to do it yourself...use that other money for new toys for your car :)

A "simple" oil change on a 740 including filter and a thorough look under and around the car should take no more than 2 hours. If you don't mind tight spaces it's not even necessary to raise the car though small ramps would probably give some elbow room. Figure on 8 qts of synthetic oil (Mobil 1 or comparable is generally available at most discount stores at less than $5/qt.). OEM oil filters are avail thru most web stores that are mentioned on the BMW chat sites. Expect to pay $8-10. Web discount deals offer free shipping w/$50-$75 purchase so I buy 3-4 oil filters + air + misc maintenance items at the same time.

Search these boards and you will find easy instructions to reset your service indicator - but to keep your inspection service clock in order, should you change oil before the lights tell you to do it, don't reset the computer until the service indicator comes on (turns yellow).

Bottom line - change your own oil and your BMW will love you for it ;)

We charge $89, use an OEM BMW Filter and BMW Oil. We also give the car a lookover while it's in the shop and rotate the tires if you ask nicely. $150 seems high to me.

Guess I got taken, I misplaced the bill but vaguely remember was charged 9 qt oil at close to $10 a qt., filter, and oil disposal charge (almost $30) total was $153 something

Mobil-1 (~$45) + oil filter (~$13). Did it myself. No offence but I would NOT trust my car to places like Fiffy-lub! Been there, done that... bad experience.

Dealer wanted $225 for the oil change. Doing it myself, can anyone link on how to reset the computer after an oilchange. Also said i need a microfilter? Any suggestions on where to get this from? Any help is greatly appreciated.

please add www.e38.org to your favorites folder. Just about everything that you need to do DIY work or mods & upgrades have been posted their. There's even instructions on how to do an oil change w/pics. :D

To help search through all the links on the site...do a page search. (click on the EDIT tab at the top of the page and choose "find on this page"...or you can do a keyboard shortcut CTRL+F. Then type "reset" into the dialog box...this will search the page for the word "reset"...when you get to the "how to reset Inspection Lights"...click the link. :-D

what weight oil are you guys using in the e38? I am about to do the first oil change.

As long as it does not take more than 9qts of oil.
Change up to 9 quarts of BMW synthetic oil, change BMW oil filter, check tire pressure, brake pad thickness, and all fluid levels, reset service indicator
