View Full Version : Confused about rebound settings

Here's my setup for reference: Dinan strut bars front and rear, eibach sways both ends, TC Kline DA (koni) setup with 500f/600r springs and Kumho MX tires.

I spoke to a guy at TCK about setup for the track, and he recommended the following proceedure:

set everything to full firm, then back off rebound 1.5 turn in the fronts, .75 turn in the rears and back off compression 5-6 clicks in the rears, 7-8 clicks in the fronts.

I did this (assuming full firm was CW on compression, and CCW on rebound), but when I took it out yesterday to test the setup, it felt VERY weird. I am relatively inexperienced (have several track days under my belt, but no more), but from what I could tell I was getting a lot of body lean in corners, and it seemed to react strangely (maybe oversteer) when I gave it power for the exit. The compression seemed fine since the bumps were still tight, but it was that lean that bothered me.

So I thought maybe full firm might actually be CW on the rebound settings too, so I set it up with 1.5 turns from full CW position fronts and .75 turns from full CW position rear. This felt much tighter in corners and inspired much more confidence. But it seems that I've actually softened it up after reading many posts on the subject. I don't know if I should have it set up this way or not and I'm not sure what the bias (front/rear) should be. If I had it set up front stiff/rear stiffer before, and now have it front soft/rear softer, is this the bias I want with my spring rates?

Any advice?

First, you don't mention how you have your sways set. This could have a major effect on your handling.

Second, I would assume TCKR would know how to set up their suspension system. They should be able to get you close. From there, you'll have to experiment based on your driving style and preferences. If you have a Koni adjustment knob, it'll tell you which way for firm (rebound). The bump is reverse of this.

Koni rebound CCW (from above the shock) = firmer
Koni bump CW (from below the shock) = firmer

I have almost the same setup as yours except I'm using H&R 28mm front bar and no rear bar. If you can, try setting up the front sway full stiff and the rear full soft. See if it helps with balance. If not, stiffen the front bump one click at a time until you feel comfortable. But generally I agree with Pete Stackhouse that a rear biased bump setting feels good.

What settings are you using for rebound? Am I way off? Currently it feels pretty good (1.5 turn from full soft in front, .75 turn from full soft rear), but I'm worried that maybe I'm setting it up incorrectly.

Jay: Thanks for your reply. I've tried what they recommend but it just feels awful. Just hoping that maybe I can understand the trends so I can figure it out myself.

for the fronts from full stiff, I turn back 1.5 turns and for the rears also from full stiff, I turn .5 turns. The TCKR setup gets a little getting used to. The front end a little floaty feeling? The rear rotating faster than you have experienced before? The lean, at least for me, communicates grip much better. With all that weight in the front end of my m coupe, I have always felt understeer. With neg camber and a bigger front bar to keep the tire on the road and stiffer rear springs and bump/rebound to balance things out; I find the grip to be significantly better than stock.

Try 3 different settings at your next track day
1) Front bump 10 out of 12, rear 7 out of 12, match the rebound to bump
2) Front bump 7 out of 12, rear 10 out of 12, match the rebound
3) TCKR set up. front: 4 out of 12, rear: 7 out of 12, etc.

You'll definitely understand what you like and you will naturally go from there. I think a race team may have 2 identical cars but different drivers will set up the suspension differently.

Neon01, just keep experimenting. I have a TCK setup also, but on a E46, so my information wouldn't help you. I believe you should use all the suggestions as good information, but, so much depends on other variables, it's really an individual thing. My guess, with 600# rear springs, you might be on the edge of compatability with street tires, so maybe softer-than-recommended damper settings are helping keep the tire in contact. With the E46 and street tires, I know I have to accept some body roll to have traction. It's just so heavy that the spring rates required to keep it flat, would also have the tires skipping all over the place.

Thanks guys, this has been very helpful. I'll experiment at the track in a couple weeks. Can't wait!
