had a 2001 X5 for 5 years which I bought brand new. no issues. my worst problem were windows not going back up due to bad window regulators. 3 out of 4 windows changed under warranty. otherwise, an extremely reliable daily driver. traded it in like brand new and now being sold as a certified pre-owned vehicle by the dealer which didn't do much to it except a thorough detailing.

I cant contribute to your list but it sounds like your X5 is giving you alot of grief.

Thats really too bad.
When I read posts like yours it sounds like a real POS. Then I go and read a post with owners who have no problems at all and that gives me glimmer of hope.
This is what I am in the market for right now I also looked at the ML MB's
but they sound like garbage also if not worse.

I hate to say it but I think I will still take a chance on a 2001-up 3.0L X5.
later this year.

Are the 3.0L as prone to problems??

Mine was actually a 3.0L. Therefore, ADSX501's engine problem complaints can't be applied to my experience with my car. And yes, the MLs are garbage. My brother had 2 and they're no comparison to the X5 in all aspects from looks, to ride, to reliability. And the X5 is much more fun to drive than the ML. It's better to take a chance on the X5.

I am sorry to hear about your trouble...:(

I bought my 2000 4.4i X5 almost 3 years ago with about 60k miles on. I got the extended warranty too cause I heard some bad things about X5s. I now have close to 100k and only issue I've had was front driver's side window regulator. At 90k service, the shop changed a couple of radiator hoses on top of regular maintenace but that was it. It's been extremely reliable 2nd daily car when my primary car was down for service/upgrade. To this day, it still amazes me how it doesn't make any noise (vault quiet) at near 100k and how it drives like new.

WOW, thats a lot of work for a car not that old...I hope mine lasts a little longer than that, but I got the extended warranty too, just in case...

Sounds to me like you need to try another dealer. Where in NY are you?

i got my '01 x5 4.4 from Wide World of Cars in Spring Valley, NY. had a major engine failure in the first 3 months of ownership, but beyond that it's just been a long list of annoyances that, all together, have taken up way too much of my time.

after the dealer finally fixed a recurring "check coolant" error (turned out to be the expansion tank, not the sensor that they replaced 4 times...), i sent a letter bmw corporate just to let them know what a joke it has been to have so many "minor" problems in a luxury vehicle.
