View Full Version : What Helmet are you wearing?
i searched and didnt find anything.
This is not a "what helmet should i buy" thread, just curious as to what others wear
what helmet are you guys using?
Also any comments, pros vs. cons, etc...
edit: where did you get your helmet? and price range?
OdyM3 03-10-2006, 01:51 PM Bell M4Pro. I like the light weight and the larger face port.
edit: I notice some others here posting. I felt that price wise, I got a great deal. There are a lot of high-end very good helmets out there, but all are SN2005 rated.
techno550 03-10-2006, 01:58 PM Stand21 F21 Double Duty. Amazingly light. Very comfortable.
SG_M3 03-10-2006, 02:03 PM Sparco WTT-tk, light, great fit. But should have bought an Arai GP5 after trying one on last weekend.
it looks like your vision is cut down with the sparco helmets, or is it just an "optical illusion?"
SG_M3 03-10-2006, 02:12 PM depends on what model, mine is the wide eye port. No obstruction at all.
The open wheel helmets do have smaller eye ports.
irace1 03-10-2006, 02:18 PM it looks like your vision is cut down with the sparco helmets, or is it just an "optical illusion?"
Only if you have eyes like a chameleon. Sitting in my car with my sparco (with the open wheel eye port), I can see the track, the apex of the corner, my guages, the rear view mirror, the side view mirror, the shift light, the red light that says I blew up, the checkered flag, etc. What else do I need to see?
I have to turn my head to look out the window (well, I would except for the HANS), but doesn't everyone?

VahramHS 03-10-2006, 02:20 PM Arai GP5, awesome helmet. It is a 1000 times more comfortable than my old Bell M3.
SHADYB 03-10-2006, 02:26 PM I have a Bell M3. great fit, I love it.
irace1 03-10-2006, 02:33 PM Not every head is created equal. You need to try a few on and see which brand's design fits your melon.
When I raced motorcycles I found that I had a Shoei head, not an Arai head. In cars, when there were only two brands available, Simpson fit me better than Bell. Now there are many more choices.
You younger guys have it made, back in the day, we raced with one size fits all, square wooden helmets tied on with inner tubes.:rolleyes
sunir 03-10-2006, 04:39 PM been using a bieffe preditor since March of '02 which was the first time I'd ever been on a race track, I just bought the helmet that week for the DE I was going to, now a few years later I'm using the same helmet ...it's a really good helmet, I've liked it.

You've got to try on different brands!..and then decide on price point. Bell fit me well. Stand 21 are wonderful and many a pro's choice. You can get a helmet for under $200 or over $1000! OG Racing, Apex, Pit Stop USA, Helmet City, Racer wholesale are all good suppliers. I am sure there are more. Pick up an issue of GrassRoots Motorsports for ideas and costs. BUT...try them on first.
LUTFY 03-10-2006, 05:56 PM Only if you have eyes like a chameleon. I second J Trout. I too use the Sparco Wind Tunnel Tested Open Wheel helmet and have no problems with 'vision'. If I had to do it again, I would have gone with the Stand 21 like the one Techno550 has.
Stand 21 is what I have. Very comfortable, easy to install mic. for radios, different inserts to fit your head, and you can get them ready for Hans. (already drilled)

qwickm3 03-10-2006, 06:27 PM Bell GTX. Comfortable helmet, pretty light and looks way cool.
325racer 03-10-2006, 06:48 PM I've got a Brand New Bieffe F1 (SA2000), it replaced my SA95 Bieffe F1. I've also got the Bieffe Open face and a Snow Board Helmet.
I like how they fit, good quality, nice and light, etc. Only problem is, there are no SA05 Bieffe's, maybe next year they will be available. I think they are the quality of near $1000 buckets for closer to $300.
scottbm3 03-10-2006, 07:13 PM I had/have a Bell Dominator. I just got a new Stand21 F21. It is under 3lbs. and is predrilled for Hans. They are not a budget helmet. I got mine from Helene Jonsson at Stand21 USA in Buford(Atlanta),GA. It's now sitting on Clebers work bench awaiting some paint.
John@BPG 03-10-2006, 07:24 PM I had/have a Bell Dominator.
Same here, nice helmet!
Helene is super nice.
Steve J. 03-10-2006, 07:30 PM Anyone ever try the HJC Ar-11. Its only 1.37kg (3lbs), and pretty cheap, waiting for sa05 to come out to try it on somewhere.

Ty, the finish looks as good as new. I'll see if I have some pics and email them to you.
Toon///Man 03-10-2006, 08:35 PM Simpson Superbandit in black. You can call me Lord Vader if you like. Got it from www.racehelmet.com
I got Pyrotect (cheapie) open face for autoxing and I'm considering their full face for $250. But now you mention Bieffe, and I like those. And Bell, and Sparco, and Stand21.
Most problably Bell M2.
FT@SGP 03-10-2006, 10:31 PM I just got an Arai GP5W, compared to my previous Bell M3, it feels signicantly better fit and lighter.
95DinanM3 03-10-2006, 10:50 PM I have the Bieffe F1 I got for a closeout price at a local race shop. I think it was around $280. I really like the helmet; fits well, and its pretty lightweight. Not Stand 21 LTW, but I also didnt pay almost a grand for it:stickoutt
SlammedE30 03-11-2006, 02:48 AM I've got an Arai GP5-K, light, fits great and looks awesome thanks to Tyler!

I think I picked my bieffe predator up in April of '02 for my first DE, still using it and love the fit after all these years. Too funny.

Montana 03-12-2006, 03:29 PM Bell GTX. Comfortable helmet, pretty light and looks way cool.
You know you are "fashion boy" racer when you have more invested in the paint job than the helmet itself..... :cool

Thanks,
Tom does mostly motorcycle racers - in fact, one or two of the m/c racer replicas you can buy from the helmet companies are his design.

Motorcycle racers and car racers definitely have different tastes, I showed him a few F1 helmets, worked out the colors and that is what he came up with.
Buell fullface motorcycle helmet-all black.
simonh 03-13-2006, 11:20 AM Basically you have to try it on, end of story, they all fit different. For instance I find the Bell M3 more comfortable than the Arai. I've tried on nearly every helmet mentioned above and it just depends on your head. The Stand's are nice, super light but again I didn't find them that comfortable for my head. Also the Arai helmets don't necessarily fit the same as their bike helmets if you are into bikes, just more food for thought. Nothing worse than an ill fitting helmet, you definitely don't want that distraction.
jayhudson 03-13-2006, 11:20 AM Jeff-
A question and a comment. How far apart are your shoulder harnesses on the harness bar? Inside edge to inside edge?
Looks like you could stand to shorten them up some. If you have enough length. HANS recommends that the metal adjuster buckles contact the lower part of the yoke, if possible.
Great pic.
Thanks - Jay

Thanks,
I wondered if anyone was going to comment. This picture is not from my car. It is from a 911 RSR endurance racer that I co-drove last year. I didn't see the car or the track until I showed up the day of the race. The owner did not use a HANS® - or a window net. He is a great guy, and I was flattered to be able to drive the car.....I always wanted to drive a P car.....but I'm over that now. The weekend was a learning experience, to say the least.
I've got an OMP Pista K Carbon seat and Schroth Profi III-6H HANS® specific 6-Point belts in my car, replacing the 5-point Sabelts that you can see in my sig.

Its a bit off topic but can you comment a bit on that p car drive?.....what vintage RSR......how does it compare to your BMW drives of similiar power? I play w/ an older 1970 T on the track. Feel free to pm me. My dream cars have always been RS and RSR's from 73 up to the IROC series. Cannot not believe the values of those cars today......

Where are you guys buying your Arai's from?
Looking for lowest price here of course.

Carlos, I just bought an Arai from Apex (swapped over from being a Bell user)
Cant express how happy I was with their service.
I was looking for a bit of a strange combo and they really went the extra mile to get me what I wanted.
Pricing seems pretty fixed on these things (probably by Arai), but Apex does deasl where they give you 10% off at certain times (which applies to Arai helmets too), so thats the way around paying MSRP.
I think they have one 10% off running right now.
Call or email Linda or Clarke.
They really are great people, and provide great service.

Lucky for me I got it at a sale they were having in Oregon, so I paid no sales tax and I got a great price on it.
