I'll be there in the MINI. :cool My first time out on a real track after 3 years of fiddlefarting around with autocross. I can't wait!

Do you have the nasty little Estoril M Coupe that used to be out at some of the autocrosses? If so... :love

Dang, I got "coupe" and "roadster" mixed up in my dumb little brain. There used to be a supercharged M roadster at some of the autocrosses that also had SSR wheels. I'm just confused, but I think I may have seen your car there too. Either way, this weekend is going to be a blast.

During lunch time on sat and sunday, anyone can drive their own car around the track for 5-15mins etc for free or either a small donation. No passing and low speeds usually with a pace car. You can sandbag it for the first lap and then do a full out lap at speed but most likely will be escorted to the gate afterwards:buttrock

I kid, someone got banned from peachtree events for passing I recall.

None.

Once I showed up, hit that Wendy's, had a friend with me, and we literally drove in at the right time, went right to the paddock and did a few laps. My friend was just sitting there slurping a Wendy's Biggie drink as we whipped it around.

They cut it short though, we were starting to hit 100mph in parts.

Actually in the past they have been on BOTH days. Saturday was usually the free day and sunday they charged a small donation fee. I might have that backwards but anyway 1 day would be free and the other cost a few bucks. This would have been 00-01-02 etc.

Hmm. I did 2 DE's and went up there to visit once, and I seem to remember no parade laps on Saturday, and free ones on Sunday. I got my car in July 2002, so I guess we are talking about 2003-2004?

I do believe they only offer them on sunday as I didnt notice any parade laps today except for the one in Seth's M5 going to Zaxby's. Was shocked at hard the SMG shifts, each gear felt like a mack truck was hitting us.

Very impressive turnout of cars and it is just amazing that pure street cars can hit 150+ on the back straight these days.

Hey guys, great day out there today. I'm glad the rain went away before we got out there.

Amber said she met one of you over at the Bimmerworld tent today while she was talking to James - who was it? I'm guessing Bill.

I saw Mr. McCoy, Lea, and Kyle (I thought that was you, but it's been a while since I've been to a meet and I didn't remember that you would be there this time). Joyride - if you have twin oval tips on your M Coupe then I saw you a number of times on track.

FYI- I'm down near the hot pit exit with the big red Georgia tent.

Looked like a good turnout and there were some scary fast cars there. 8 years ago nobody dreamed that stock productions cars woudl be hitting 160mph on the back straight. Dont think I would want to instruct a Z06, GT3, Ford GT etc. Give me a student with a 318 any day.

How was your instructor? We go back several years, he was just getting into racing as I was getting out.

We started behind Seth Thomas in a GT3 who just dusted us. We were probably turning high 38s and Seth had to be turning 37s or 36s.

The whole damned instructor group drove very fast and very well, it definitely had a racing feel to it.

We (the instructors) got our butts chewed out on Sunday morning for our driving antics. In fact, they took away our pass anywhere with a point by on Sunday and only allowed us to pass on the straights. To be honest, there where some pretty crazy sessions on Saturday (especially the last of the day) but I never once felt uncomfortably or unsafe on the track. All in all one of the best weekends I've had on the track. My little P-car had fun:redspot

Yes, the intensity level of the instructor group did get out of hand on Saturday, to the point where the event Committee had to act. The instructor groups on Sunday were much saner, and more in line with the spirit of a Driving Education event. That's not just a wink-wink title for the insurance waiver, it's the honest-to-goodness philosophy of what we're there to provide.

There are plenty of organizations to feed the need for wheel-to-wheel competition, and also organizations that have a Time Trial format (such as NASA) for those who are more interested in comparing lap times than in learning and mastering the principles of high performance driving.

Our policies prohibit timing of laps, and I would consider it both a favor and a piece of unsolicited advice to those of you who insist on timing laps to keep those remarks to yourself and off of public forums.

As the event chairman, I don't need the grief of having a clever lawyer challenge our no-timing policy, and if one of you participants ever damage your car and file an insurance claim after having posted lap times on public forums, I'd say you are asking for real trouble in getting that claim paid.

We had a great weekend at Road Atlanta, and I'd like to just leave it at that.

He & I were about 2 seconds apart in it, via trackside stop watches. Frankly, I am not willing to push someone else's car 100%...and hell, he has been driving RA since 1998...so I was pretty happy with that performance. You are correct--with clear track, Seth's best that I timed was in the 1:36's, and my best was in the 1:38's. After I rode with him a couple of times, I would bet most of that 2 seconds I lose in T12. I am just not that comfortable wiht that turn yet (with a whopping 2 days' driving road Atlanta under my belt) to really drive it as it needs to be driven there.

Frankly, your car was easier to drive at speed (althought not as brutally fast). Despite the Motons in the GT3 (just installed Friday), the GT3 is, by nature, a very twitchy car...and his was very twitchy especially at an (observed) 158mph heading into T10a in 5th gear. Yours was totally planted...but we weren't doing 158, either..

Is it? I have no idea. Never driven there before, so I don't know what competitive times are. But yeah, that GT3 gathers speed really, really fast..and sort of unobtrusively. That 158 was with zero traffic from the exit of T5 all th eway thru 10a & 10b. Pretty scary, actually, especially in someone else's $90k car w/o cage, etc. :)

What a well-done event. Kudos to the Peachtree CCA community there. Nice folks, good drivers, good students. And lots of cool cars to drive...W00t!!!!

I dunno, it was my first day on the track too but I was going 100 so to me, yes, it's fast. :D

Then again I've got ~115 hp so the ~400hp and infinitely more skilled driver would probably lead to higher speeds on the straights. :dunno

It's fast to most of us. My car (stock except for PFC 97's up front and Motul fluid) will only touch 140+ (indicated) if I get a good run off 7 and keep full on the gas all the way until the braking zone. I hit 135 every lap for the most part unless I'm held up on the straight.

Chris, thanks again for letting me drive your beautiful car yesterday.

Thanks isn't necessary...you're welcome to drive my car anytime you're around. If you want to use it for the BMWCCA Road ATL race in October we can work something out (I may not be able to make that race).

I'll echo Chuck Taylor's statement...a DE environment isn't a place to push things to the limit. Any advanced DE student can go to a NASA TT (time trial) weekend to find their personal best. I think TT is a national series now...show up at the NASA Nationals in September (MidOhio) to earn the ultimate bragging rights.

TT is attainable for any car in working condition. All that's required is a timing device (transponder), no cage or anything. As Chuck alluded to, if you ball your car up in a 'timed' event then it's not covered by insurance. Also, with no safety cage or other devices I wouldn't truly go 10/10ths but that's just me.

I almost went Code Brown when I saw that number flash up on the GT3's digital speedo readout, given that (a) the car was not mine, (b) I had a passenger, and (c) we had no cage or harnesses...heh..

There was only one 158 that I saw (not exactly the best place to be looking at a speedometer). Most of my other laps I was in the 145-150 range (usually with traffic somewhere on that straight). Riding with Seth, I looked over several times and routinely saw him hitting 150-155mph.

The red mustang that pushes 550rwhp reportedly pegged the speedo at 160 just as it was headed down the hill (instructor, not student driving at the time). Of course, speedo's are +/- 10% on a good day. I got in to instruct for one run in that car late on Sunday and the acceleration was incredible as were the stoptech brakes. Unfortunately, he lost his 4th gear syncro on the first lap.

Late to the party. Weekend was a HOOT. I had a great time. There were some quick cars out there. The maroon Mustang was VERY fast. He would catch up to me SO SO hard at the back straights it was not even funny, so was the Balanced Performance Z. I was able to do a back to back comparison between the 235s RA1s and the 255s Pirellis. The RA1s are worth at least 2 full seconds over the Pirellis plus the taller tire on a stock diff makes it come out of the corners a lot slower. I couldn’t hit 5th with the Pirellis.

Jonathan, do you know what Sean (the other Green M3) runs out there? Plus I want to get your contact information. Hit me up at alutfeali@gmail.com

Krisko, you car looks HOT! With those tires, I wouldn’t be surprised if you were turning out low 1:38s. I think I loaned you some power steering fluid/ATF at the October school, if I'm thinking of the right guy.

After the crazy wear at TGP on those tires, I ended up having to swap the fronts around Sunday morning to keep the shoulder from wearing completely off on the driver side tire. I was a little bit afraid to run them backwards since they're directional, but James said it was fine and they held up - no issues :buttrock

Krisko's car looked & drove great, Ahmad. It was my first time on the Kumho 710's. He warned me they might get greasy after several laps, but they warmed up fast (1/2 lap) and stayed consistent for ther entire time I was driving. Very nice tires. How they'd do at my race pace, particularly in an enduro on a hot day, is unknown, however. Krisko's car was very easy to drive--a real pleasure despite being a tiny bit soft for Road Atlanta (I could feel it in T1 & T12).

I have heard good stuff about those Kumhos, and they are prolly faster than the Hoosiers. When you say soft, do you mean its slightly underdamped or the springs are not up to par? What would you suggest?

OK, Krisko, I hope you don't mind me answering this on this forum. I shared all the below opinions with Krisko at the track.

Well, Ahmad, he is using the max spring rate his SA Konis can handle, and they work well together. However, IMHO (again, I am 100% new to Road Atlanta this past weekend), Road Atlanta requires a really firm set-up because it is so smooth and relatively on-camber. We were doing 1:38's with me driving very easily (I do not really push other peoples' cars....especially with them in the right seat! :) ) and I am guessing, with the same driving effort, I gave up 2 seconds easily just due to suspension loading issues in T12 & T1 that did not allow me to get to WOT as soon as I would have liked in those corners.

Lemming, thanks! That WAS me driving! I distinctly remember coming up on your car as you were behind that maroon 911, and I passed the latter coming out of 7 just before we all went by that white NSX. W00t!! Shaun, do you remember that white NSX?

No, I don't. In all honesty I was trying to see the speedo readout once we got near the end of the straight on each lap. I'm sure it was you if you remember it that well, but I'm fairly certain we followed that maroon Porsche in that same section of the track.

I think Krisko is keeping a low profile for now until he gets some exotic Mod suspension soon ;)

Dave I am trying to benchmark the times for IP/CM/IS etc. Its not more of a whose got the fastest time but I usually hop in with driver's faster than me or even better, have them drive my car to see where can I pick up (I learn best from driving from the passenger seat first). Maybe I will have Krisko drive my car out at the NASA event to see what he has learnt from you guys ;)

1:38s and you are not pushing? Who ya foolin :)

LOL about my avatar. No comment. ;-)

Seriously, the car did most of the work. I will tell you bluntly where I was taking it easy:

=T1 I had to ease up half way thru to let the suspension settle before bringing the car to the left for T2

=I was only at WOT thru about 2/3 of the Esses, and could have been for all of them, IMO

=I could have carried a LOT more speed thru T6 & braked a LOT later for it

=I braked probably 50' early for T10a

=I short-shifted to 4th pretty early as I went under the T11 bridge--Seth said ideally shift just before turn-in for T12 & get a faster entry into T12 & thus higher speed down the front straight

=I was able to get to WOT just after turn in for 12, but would have really preferred to do so just before---maybe I am wrong there

It was interesting having maranello drive my car...he's faster than me in a few spots and I'm faster than him in others (but I attribute that to road ATL seat time and the fact that it wasn't his car). He's a LOT faster than me through 10a/b as well as T1. T6 is similar to T1, Dave was faster than me there too.

Seth is likely correct when he says to shift just before T12 but I prefer to shortshift at the top of the hill because my car has so much torque. I have enough to worry about at T12 without thinking about shifting. If I get close to redline at T12 track out then I'll think about changing my shift points. And you are right...from T10b exit you should be completely into the gas all the way through 12 (really into T1).

I get into 3rd gear for T3 then gradually add power in the left hand carousel, shifting to 4th about 2/3rds the way through that turn. Then I'll either breate the throttle or just tap the brake to assist turn in, then it's WOT into the esses (my favorite part of the track). I leave a lot of speed on the table in T5...I need to get some pointers from Seth.

Re: my suspension...I was all hot for a new suspension but after seeing what the car is capable of with Dave driving it I just might hold off a bit. I suspect if I get embarassed this weekend I'll blame it on the suspension and cut a $5000 check for a new one(after all it couldn't have been my driving!:D ).

And a personal story about Seth, I wished him good luck as he opens his race season at Sebring next week. He wished me good luck as I open my club racing season next week too. You might say it was my 'Mean Joe Greene' moment...most of you are too young to understand what I'm saying but maranelloman and the other old timers get it.

Here is what really worked in T5, I think: straight-line the last left-hand-side curb before 5. Get your left tires all over it. That straightens the entry to 5 and allows a straighter braking zone w/o the suspension loading one way & then the next in rapid succession. Then brake relatively early--like at the beginning of the right hand turn-in curb while getting right side tires up on the slanted face of the curb--and a quick downshift back to 3rd. Come off the brakes BEFORE the end of the curb. Thisis, IMO, the key part. Then back to WOT before turn in. The hill will hold the car even at WOT (which is what I did) and you will track out all the way over the pavement ot the right of the track out curb, just as we did. Doing it right in your car, I was nearly out of revs in 3rd gear by the time we crested that hill with the wheels straight & it was time to go up to 4th approaching T6.

Hell, race it the way it is, man. It is hella fun w/o spending more $$$.

Krisko,

You and I take the same approach through most of the turns/corners. I too slow down more than I should for T5. Turn is similar to the uphill at Limerock, my then instructor would tell me to just tap on the brakes and aim to hit the guard rail and then the hill will catch you. This applies to T5 as well, I need a ride with someone more agressive. This means, you dont get to drive my car anymore this weekend :)

Turn 6 is the same way. Clay says if you are accelerating in that corner, you are NOT going fast enough. There is camber banking but I maybe I am not looking past the apex and being chicken.

When you said 'you are right' about T10a and b WOT until T1 who were you referring to? I learnt this from Mike Lawrence when he rode with me back in 2002 showing me the track yelling something like 'what the hell are you doing slowing down there....power power all the way'. I didnt believe it could be done until he took me out in his LTW and proved it with his Kum-hoes STREET TIRES on. :alright

I was referring to maranello's comment when he said he was slow through T12. Even in my poorly sprung car I'm wide open from the turn in at T10b all through 12. It's really a simple corner to drive as long as you can ignore the walls.

I really want to get better at T5 but I've had a pucker moment or two through there. I'm going to worry about improving myself in T1 and T7...more speed and less danger to be had in those spots.

I need to grow some cajones before I'll be able to go flat out from 10b to 1; 12 scares the heck out of me.

As for 5, I caught a lot of people there this weekend and I was being timid given the fact that I hit the wall on drivers left there last fall:eek:

As for the esses, I should be able to go flat out as soon as I begin the turn in on 4, but see 2 paragraphs above for the reason I don't do it:eyecrazy

As for who was driving the GT3, well, the footage was from the early afternoon instructor run group. So who was driving?

maranelloman

I know intuitively that 10b to 1 is flat...but I didn't have the stones, esp. in James' WC car, Seth's GT3, or Krisko's M3, to attempt it my first time at RA. Man's got to know his limitations, yo.

I also caught lots of folks in 5. Also 1, 2, and 3.

Ironically, I was flat thru the Esses in the GT3, but didn't want Krisko to go Code Brown if I did so in his car...heh.

Early afternoon instructor session? Moi, IIRC.

158mph is very fast...consider that the ALMS Corvettes are doing 175 at T10a, my car is capable of 147 at most.

Nice times to the guy before this. Just wanted to see if anyone was close to the MTI Racing Corvette. I know there had to be some instructor in a crazy car out there during this HPDE.

The data logger on Reese Cox's car had him going about 165mph before he had to hit the brakes. He ended up running 1:32's in traffic on some of the laps. I kind of expected that with 605rwhp but if anyone saw this car on March 4th it was impressive to say the least. I just wish they could let him have a free lap.

The data logger on Reese Cox's

I'm getting a datalogger dammit. I've been following the thread in the track forum...$900 is too cheap for something that will monitor lap times, lines around the track as well as incorporate gauges and a display unit.

Market forces are working to make these things cheaper and more useful.

No sarcasm, 1:32 in traffic is pretty damned good, although the 605rwhp certainly helps...

Pfffttt, what is a brake pedal???? ;)

Dave described the best way thru 5 except IMO do not hit/jump the inside curb, just a tap.

If you have not done it already, walk the track. It helps greatly to see the camber, crowns etc that you NEVER see while driving. Turn 5 is a good example. If the track was on a level plane, the middle/crown is about 6-10inchs higher than the sides or at least track out. Any car with traction issues will have a tendency to oversteer near track out. Carry lots of speed in, smooth on throttle and use as much space on track out as possible. I straighten up before the turn in by going wide to the left then darting back over towards the curbing on the right at turn in. To be clear I dont move over much to the left but about 2-3ft more than most who just follow the curb around. Brake early and back on gas at turn in, wot to 6. In my car, I needed to shift at the end of right side curb on track out.

Has anyone ever spun in 6? I find it is easy to catch cars at 6 to the turn in at 7. Wish there was a safer passing zone at 7 as most take 6 way too slow.

I consider a Data system a must have the next time I start racing. And there will be a next time:buttrock I was sold when Bimmerworld was ITS racing and using the dataacq to improve their lap times by 1-2 seconds each session. You see the best corners and when you can put them all together for one lap, it is a huge improvement. It also helps greatly if you have another driver to do laps so you can compare the differences.

Passing in T6 is a tough call unless it's for position, then go for it. I eat up slower cars in 6 for obvious reasons but I generally will wait til after 7 for the pass. The problem is that unless he knows your there, he'll likely chop you off after the T6 apex by accident.

In my second race at RA there was a Boxster holding me up...he was actually 2 classes ahead of me but driving very poorly in a fast car. I executed a pass in T6 just to drive a crappy line at 7 and I got repassed. Two laps later I'm still on him when I make my ballsiest pass ever. He had a habit of braking at T4 so I damned near straighlined the apex and shot in front of him. I was somewhat out of control...hopped the middle curb in the esses (back when I was trying to avoid hopping it) and I missed a shift at 5. Regardless he was out of my rearview after T7.

I'll be up against 4 or 5 competitive cars this weekend...I'll likely have to execute a ballsy pass if the opportunity presents itself.

Mike, just to be clear: I do not use the T5 apex curb. What I meant was riding the left tires over the previous left side curb of the Esses IMMEDIATELY PRIOR to T5. Specifically, it is the curb where the word "Esses" is on this map:

http://www.roadatlanta.com/trackmap.lasso

As you come down the hill, you can see that it fully straightens the last half of the esses & straighens the entry to the T5 braking zone. I actually only kissed the T5 apex curb, as Mike says.
