I would like to paint/coat the calipers on my car to go along with my refinished wheels and soon to be new detail job. Nothing flashy, just a slightly glossy silver color from the Eastwood company. Has anyone done this? What is the operating temp of the brakes? Mostly mine is traffic driven (when it is driven) and a little spirited driving on occasion. Will this stuff stay on the calipers? Would the temp get over 500 F? 900 F?

Thanks.

You should buy specific caliper paint which is available at many auto parts stores. I know AutoZone carries it.

Caliper paint usually has a temp rating above 1500F, which is 200F-500F more than typical barbeque paint.

Caliper paint also bonds better, for some reason. I've used it on a variety of things which did not get anywhere near the max temp, but barbeque paint peeled off.

I've done it with both BBQ paint (former 535i) and an application-specific polymer (E38). Both worked fine and stayed on.

The key is to make sure the calipers are spotlessly clean before-hand. I had the calipers rebuilt both times so the shop that did the work had them bead-blasted as part of their process...

The stuff I'm looking at is made for calipers. Comes with cleaner, 2 part coating, brush and mixing stick :redspot for about $45. They say its enough for 4 calipers. It self levels too so it should get rid of some of the casting marks. Good for temps up to 932 F.

yeah this stuff sucks. I tried it on my rx7 and it looked like I painted it on with a paint brush. Just go to pepboys and get high temp engine spray paint in any color you want. I just ended hitting mine with a bottle of brake cleaner and a wire brush. Then gave them a blast of compressed air to get everything out of the little creases. Then just tape everthing off with newspaper and give each caliper 4 coats. It will take a little time especially because its winter now (summer they dry quick) and repeat this 3 more times.

oh I forgot to mention that this needs to be done when you are changing the brake pads and have the caliper hanging by the brake line resting on the rotor. I plan to do mine when I replace the brake pads and add SS brake lines. If you add SS brake lines the caliper can be removed and you can do a better job of bonding the paint.

There also is a company on ebay that sells the BMW high temp decals for the caliper in any color you want.
