View Full Version : Whining noise from engine only at cold start
pusher 03-08-2006, 04:05 PM It's a typical cold winter in Chicago. When I start the car in the morning there is whining (best i can describe) noise from the engine. As soon as the idle kicks down everything is butter. I believe the belts were recently changed. Is this normal or do I need to get this checked out? I have a 99 740IL.

rear cover plate intanke manifold i just replace mine rough idle in the cold start a litle bit of smoke for like 10 seconds a a strong whinning
Jfstu 03-08-2006, 06:30 PM check the level of your power steering fluid. chances are your hoses are leaking if you have not yet had them replaced.
it is the aux air pump located in the fender well under the air cleaner box. if you put your ear to the air cleaner box you should hear the high frequency howl. to further verify your can remove the hose that is connected to the front side of the air box that goes to the air pump.

I'm pretty sure the rear cover was recently replaced

I'll check the level and report back. All power steering hoses were replaced in the last 20k.

I'll check on this over the weekend and report back.
Thanks for all the replies!
SpeedyMax 03-09-2006, 03:52 AM It might be your alternator
greene08 03-09-2006, 01:11 PM It could be flux capacitor too.
pusher 03-10-2006, 02:21 AM Ok...Power steering fluid level is full. Alternator was replaced in last 10K. Flux capacitor is fluxing:)
I still have to check on the aux air pump this weekend.
SpeedyMax 03-10-2006, 03:43 AM guys can anyone tell me where is that aux air pump located because i have exact same whining sound, and how do you check it
Thnx Steve
Obviously you should just move from Chicago to Phoenix. Problem solved.

as stated above, it is in the wheel well under the air cleaner box. do a search on e38.org for r/r, also you can remove the wheel well liner for access. seems to be fairly common to have some degree of whinning(mine does it), not sure if it is bearings or some other part wearing. it does not seem to be a problem other than the noise. if the pump fails it should generate a ses/cel light, it is part of the emissions system. as far as checking it, as posted above, remove the hose on the front side of the air cleaner box and if there is suction, the pump is working. i removed the wheel well liner to check for leaking hoses but found all to be tight and in good condition.
TransporterE38 03-10-2006, 06:34 PM It could be flux capacitor too.
lol

You were right. That is exactly where the noise was coming from. I'll check if the pump is operating. I hope I don't have to replace it. It only makes noise from cold start. Thanks for the help.
pusher 06-02-2006, 11:47 PM I followed the instructions on e38.org for replacing the aux air pump and problem solved.

LMAO...i laughed out loud when i read this!!

i think mine is the alternator...off to e38.org!

I deleted this in my M5, I wonder if we can delete this in the 740 also...hmmmmm
crewdog843 06-03-2006, 08:36 PM Mine makes the same type sound, not a true whining noise, but more like a low moan. If you place your hand on the cover of the air filter, it will go away, almost as if whatever is making the noise is inducing it into the plastic covering of the filter canister. Once I found out where the sound was coming from, I stopped worrying about it because I knew the filter was clean (just replaced it, and the clips were solidly in place). The sound goes away when the car kicks down from the 800 rpm idle to the 550-600 normal range.

Well the pump is mounted right below the filter box and is connected to it by a vacume hose. The hose you have to pull off the cover to get a filter in is connected to the air pump. Maybe you have to snug everything down to lessen the vibrations when the pump is running?
crewdog843 06-04-2006, 07:36 AM German plastic does not seem to take well to 'snugging'....
I don't find the sound offensive, only interesting. When the car stops making noises, then I'll start worrying.

Mine runs [sucking noise] for 45 or so seconds at startup and then quiets down.
