Is there a concern I should I have with an '02 M3 or should I avoid it and get a '03.5 or later model. I have heard many different opinions from my friends so I figured owners on this site would know best.

The mileage on this particualr one is 30k and all the warranty is up on it. It is a 6-spd and not an SMG if that makes a difference. Should I consider an extended warranty, if so which company is recommended?

I have had a variety of interior trim issues and coil problems on my '02. All have been covered under warranty. Others have reported similar issues with '01 and '02 M3s. PM if you want details.

From what I read and a friend is a BMW mechanic, the 02's are very solid. The changes in later years are insignificant so why not? You could get an 03 or 04 but would probably get hit with more depreciation.

and you get the 100k mile warranty.
