Does anyone know for sure if there was a software update done to the SMG computers - and what the time frame was?
I drove an early '02 with SMG and wasn't impressed, but I also heard that there was a SW upgrade that might address some of the things I wasn't impressed with (lurching basically). When I asked the sales droid at the dealership - he claimed to talk to someone in the service department who claimed to know nothing about one..
So - I come to the source..
TIA!

Ummm... as Emily Latella used to say "Never mind.."
Found it on: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=64650&highlight=smg+software
Checked - they pulled up the service records and it had been done on the car back in October (which is when I'm guessing it was turned in off lease and CPO'd.)
I'm going back this afternoon to take a more leisurely try at getting SMG to work in an acceptable manner. We'll see if it is doable.

The only real problems BMW has seen with the SMG is with the SMG relay. There are several SIB's related to this problem, including a software update.

If you want to be smoother with the SMG..........
on upshifts, breathe off the throttle (like you would in a regular manual)
on downshifts, keep your foot in it for perfectly matched downshifts.

Good advice. After my last software update it did smooth out on its own but if you want really smooth work the throttle just like you were shifting a 6-speed.
