And how difficult/Time consuming is it? I just got mine from Ireland Engineering along with the Blue Coil, and was wondering about how long it will/should take to install.
Thanks,

View Full Version : Has anyone installed the XR700 ignition? turb02 02-21-2006, 08:24 PM And how difficult/Time consuming is it? I just got mine from Ireland Engineering along with the Blue Coil, and was wondering about how long it will/should take to install. Thanks, Dane mmiller2002 02-21-2006, 11:37 PM Not sure how hard to install the XR700, mine was shop-installed. But why a blue coil? I thought that a '75 had a ballast resistor wire built-into the car. Therefore, the blue coil's built-in resistance is not needed. The stock coil or a red coil would be better, I think. BTW, do you track that "332is?" blitzed310 02-22-2006, 11:06 AM Mine took about 2 hours. But most of the time I was brain storming on the location of the box. Its a simple install. Make sure to seal the leads going into the dizzy. Also double and tripple check the "firing wheel" so it doesnt rub up agaisnt the sensor eye. HarryPR 02-22-2006, 11:59 AM I installed an XR3000 on my '02 and, as Blitzed310 said, it's fairly straightforward. Just follo the instructions and try to install the box as far away from the exhaust as possible (especially on cars with headers). One of the best upgrades I've made. It has been working flawlessly for 5+ years after having two Pertronix fail within weeks of being installed. blitzed310 02-22-2006, 12:22 PM I installed an XR3000 on my '02 and, as Blitzed310 said, it's fairly straightforward. Had my XR3000 for 3+ years, and went through 2 petronix, except both mine took a shit in the same week. Petronix FTL! http://bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=410805&highlight=xr3000 turb02 02-27-2006, 07:32 PM I installed it with a few timing problems at first but after I got those out of the way it might have taken me 2.5 hours. I dont know about the ballast resistor as I dont kno what it looks like or where it is mounted under the hood. I installed the xr700 close to the distributor but high on the firewall. Will that be a good location? I was going to install it kinda between the fender and windshield (there is a little cubbyhole but I didnt know if it was safe from water) If someone cal point me in the right direction of the ballast resistor (Where it is and how to bypass it), ithat would be great! BTW mmiller2002, my intentions are to start tracking it but ever since my swap(that I did myself) I have had a CEL for either the lambda controller or the O2 sensor(which I have replaced twice to no avail), and had numerous suspension problems (Snapped Diff bolt, RTAB's, RSM's shredded Flex Disc, ripped CSB...................) So I would like to start this summer. mmiller2002 02-28-2006, 12:06 AM My XR700 box:http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74/mmiller2002/My%2076/IMG_0140.jpg My ballast resistor wire right at the coil: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74/mmiller2002/My%2076/coilresistorwire.jpg It's clear/yellowish on my '76. turb02 02-28-2006, 07:31 PM So.... you just disconnect that clear/yellowish wire from the coil? Or what? zambo 02-28-2006, 11:47 PM My XR700 box:http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74/mmiller2002/My%2076/IMG_0140.jpg My ballast resistor wire right at the coil: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y74/mmiller2002/My%2076/coilresistorwire.jpg It's clear/yellowish on my '76. Got a feeling the ballast resistor isn't necessary with the 700 - only the 3000 model - can anyone confirm that? :rolleyes Regards zambo blitzed310 03-01-2006, 12:16 AM I'm pretty sure you need the ballast for both the 700 and the 3000. I had them both but it was not needed in my situation. zambo 03-01-2006, 01:16 AM You are right - I mis-read the diagram attached to the link above - http://bimmerforums.com/forum/showth...ghlight=xr3000 - that showed the jumper wire over the ballast resistor when USING the XR3000 - sorry about that folks! :eyecrazy mmiller2002 03-01-2006, 09:27 AM My resistor wire is connected, and my 700 works fine. I have a stock coil which also needs the ballast resistor wire. Got a feeling the ballast resistor isn't necessary with the 700 - only the 3000 model - can anyone confirm that? :rolleyes Regards zambo turb02 03-16-2006, 07:16 PM I am using a "blue Coil" from Ireland engineering. I have the yellowish color wire connected and it seems to be running fine. Should I watch out for anything that might happen if I leave that wire connected? mmiller2002 03-16-2006, 10:26 PM I think that you're double-ballasted. I ran that way for a while without knowing. No real problems. I am using a "blue Coil" from Ireland engineering. I have the yellowish color wire connected and it seems to be running fine. Should I watch out for anything that might happen if I leave that wire connected? archomai 03-17-2006, 02:04 AM total resistance. The stock coil and red bosch coil have about 1.5ohm internal resistance, so they need the ballast resistor's additional 1.5ohm resistance. The blue coil, however, is "internally resisted", and has 3.0ohm resistance without an internal resistor. So you don't need the resistor. I have an XR700 on my '72 now and it's run great for the past 6 months or so, since I installed it. I am running the ballast resistor, but I have a coil that's not internally resisted. mauka 03-17-2006, 02:27 PM total resistance. But, just to make it a little more complicated, I bought a replacement Bosch Blue coil, and it said "no internal resistor" on the label. If that's the case, you DO want that external ballast resistor. Also, the Crane guys said if the ignition module on the XR700 feels "very hot" to the touch after 15 minutes of running the engine, then you probably need an external resistor. turb02 03-21-2006, 10:30 PM Thanks for the input everyone. Now I just need to find time for a total tuneup and I will be set. this is kinda off the subject but can a valve job be done while the car is on the car? |
