I think you put the plastic key in it to work in the ign slot.

the exta black plastic key that you keep in your wallet fits in that gadget which is then placed in the slot on dash

Yeah, I see it as pointless, since you can't keep it outside the car to unlock your doors if you lock yourself out of the car, since it only starts the egnition, but doesn't unlock the doors.

1) use the black plastic key to unlock the car from the drivers side.
2) insert black plastic key into holder, and insert into ignition to start car.
