View Full Version : Clutch is slipping at 6,000 - 6,500 rpm
BAADDOG 09-20-2002, 07:27 PM I drove a new 2002 E39 M5 with about 5,000 miles and the clutch slipped at 6,000 - 6,500 rpm everytime?
I drove 2 other new M5's with the very same experience.
What is do you think is happening here??
Thanks
FiKtIOn 09-20-2002, 07:30 PM Could it be that they are sufficently warm? since it has what the best rpm to rev to at that temp indicated by leds..thought i would try and help

Hey,
Thanks for the reply.
All cars were at operating temps and the lights were on and good to go.
Is there a clutch delay valve that could cause the delay and slipping??
Mitch P. 09-30-2002, 04:12 AM were you trying to power shift? If you were trying to do a drop clutch shift after hitting redline to "scratch" into the next gear, these cars do have CDV's (clutch delay valves) which will prevent undue wear to the driveline - or so I've heard. I don't have a stick E39 (I have the step), but many over ad roadfly talk quite a bit about removing the CDV.
BAADDOG 09-30-2002, 07:15 AM Thanks

Did you go to Knauz or Fields?? I have been wanting to drive an M5. Was it hard to convince them to let you take it out?

I would not do business at Fields if they gave me a free BMW M5.
I have a preferred customer relationship at Kanuz. I never have had a problem at Knauz. I would rather pay list and get excellent customer treatment and service at Knauz.
The M5's I test drove were at Luxury Motors.
///MDriver 10-04-2002, 02:05 PM I agree. Fields may be the largest dealer in Illinois, but they do not know how to treat their customers. I bought a car there, I will not make that mistake again.
Richy Gonzalez 10-17-2002, 01:08 AM FYI - It just so happens that I just spoke to a BMW tech about 97 and up 5 series (540/M5). He told me that the clutch mechanism (no springs on the clutch plate but it all turns together) just simply doesn't hold up to the massive torque/hp of those cars. He said that a 540 6spd wasn't bad if you where moving but an M5 is pretty common. Hum, much hp does an M5 have again?
He did also mention that one of his customers went through 2 clutches until the 3rd install of a new clutch, the customer brought an aluminum flywheel and so far so good.
Dark Helmet 10-17-2002, 01:47 AM if you beat on a 540 hard enough... you can make it slip.
DO NOT ask me how I know :D:D:D:D
///MDriver 10-17-2002, 12:45 PM The M5 has 385hp I believe.
themadhatter 10-17-2002, 10:24 PM I believe the M5 has 394hp and 368lbs of torque.
and they call it a family car. :laugh
///MDriver 10-17-2002, 10:32 PM Ha, family car. 394 horsepower.......... shyut. Look at all that torque........... I need that in my raodster.
Dustin540/6 10-22-2002, 05:11 PM I have the same problem with my '00 540/6. Mine has 30k on it and is starting to slip like a mutha under heavy accelleration.
